Charles Bennett on the passing of his wife, Doris Bennett, December 21; to the family of Clarence Reynolds who passed away December 21; and to Mike Clark and family on the passing of his father, Prince Bo Clark, December 22. As we flip the calendar to a new year, we celebrate the accomplishments of 2018 and we grieve the losses of Every year has its own taste of victory mixed with some losses. But we who put our hope in the Lord rejoice as we open the door to a new year, a new year that embraces both promise and challenge. As 2019 emerges, my soul holds hope and anxiety. A large and historic challenge faces the United Methodist Church. The Council of Bishops has called a Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church to be held February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose will be to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward based on the recommendations of the Council of Bishops. The 32-member Commission was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church. For several decades the United Methodist Church has been divided on the issue of homosexuality. The hope has been that through the Commission on a Way Forward we would be able to resolve the issue and move forward. The Commission on a Way Forward presented to the bishops proposals, and the bishops are sending a recommended proposal along with two other proposals to the called session of General Conference. This is a brief and simple explanation of a complex and deeply dividing issue. I realize that many have already determined where they stand, and no debate or conversation will change their mind or heart. I just ask two things of you. First, be in prayer and be compassionate toward those who have a different mind than you. Second, be knowledgeable, when you speak know the facts. To help us know the facts, I have invited Tom Grieb, a former pastor of Settle Memorial, and a delegate to General Conference, to share with us on February 7 at 6:30 pm in the Shepherd Center. Tom has an excellent understanding of the complexity of the issue and the processes that are involved in the coming decision. In my year and a half as pastor of Settle Memorial, I have witnessed a people of great faith who love one another deeply. My prayer is for that love to carry us through a historic challenge and for us to emerge on the other side as a people of even greater faith and love. Your servant, Keith
