I feel energized and ready. But by about four in the afternoon I start to feel drained. It gets even worse because I know that there will be no relief after the sun goes down. This is Arizona, it is what you would expect. It has been this way every year. The truth is, I cannot do much to change the circumstances around me. I must simply get through this heat wave. Pretty soon cooler weather will be coming, (come February I may even be longing for a few days like we are experiencing right now). I must do what is called, persevere. Perseverance is a very Biblical perspective. Very often we read in Scripture God encouraging us to just hang in there, not give up, hold on to our hope, keep the faith. This is the ultimate test of our Christian faith, perseverance. Better times are ahead. God's blessing will refresh us in do course. No more important message could be given to us, especially during times of trial and difficulty, than to trust in the Lord and renew our strength. This is perseverance at its best. It wont allow the present circumstances to overrule our faith. Our confidence remains strong in the Lord, and we are able to remain consistent through anything toward the better times that lie ahead. During these next few weeks, may the perseverance we need to get through the heat remind us of the greater perseverance necessary to make our way through life, in faith and hope. Through Christ our Savior, Pastor Tom Yes, I'm willing to admit it, the heat this summer is finally starting to get to me. I was doing well through June. I relished the days growing longer and the sun shining brighter. Perhaps it is the monsoon effect with its added humidity. I really do believe, though, that it is the incessant heat that has broken me down. July hasn't been easy. 2 Announcements from Amy Sunday School Teacher Training-- There will be a Sunday School Teacher Training session on Saturday, August 28, from 8:30-10:30am. All Sunday School teachers are invited to join us for breakfast and an informational session about the upcoming Sunday School year! Please R.S.V.P. to Joy Axelson by August 21. We hope to see you there! Family Movie Night Recap- The evening started with a game of People Bingo where participants spent time getting to know a bit more about each other. Did you know we have several people in the congregation who have never been to Iowa?? Congratulations to the People Bingo winners: Esther Herdt and Roger Riggert! We enjoyed fellowship over a Pizza supper and then Popcorn and Movie candy were served while we watched the movie, Up. We closed with a devotion talking about the great mission adventure God has given to each of us! Thanks to everyone who joined us for Family movie night! We hope you enjoyed the evening and hope you will join us for our next event! Back to School Bowling Bonanza!! School is back in session time to take a break from your homework and join us for our next Trinity Family Event! We will be bowling at Fountain Bowl on Sunday, August 15, from 2-4pm. The cost is $11 per person and includes unlimited bowling and shoe rental. All ages and skill levels are welcome; bumper bowling is available if needed! 3 REALIGNMENT OF LCMS HOUSTON During voting on 7/16/2010, all remaining elections were completed, including positions on the newly formed Board of National Mission and the Board of International Mission. The two boards were formed earlier in the week when delegates passed Resolution 8-08A, to realign the national synod ministries around two mission boards. The resolution eliminated existing program boards and some staffed commissions at the LCMS International Center in St. Louis; made all staff, except the Commission on Theology and Church Relations, accountable to an officer of the Synod; and assigned most functions to the two ministry boards or others, such as the Synod president, the Board of Directors, districts or other LCMS agencies. The Office of National Mission will be responsible for coordinating national ministry that is directed toward, or serving, domestic ministries, especially congregations and schools through their districts. Such ministries may include but not be limited to Lutheran school ministries and accreditation, human care and domestic mercy efforts, stewardship, evangelism, youth ministry, church planting and revitalization. The Office of International Mission will oversee LCMS work in other countries. This office will place and support foreign missionaries, establish and maintain international schools, coordinate international relief efforts, and support and encourage the work of the Synod's international partner churches in conjunction with the Office of the President. Both boards will be comprised of one individual member of Synod and one layperson from each of the five newly formed regions: East (New Jersey, Atlantic, Eastern, New England, Southeastern, Florida-Georgia Districts); Great Lakes (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, North Wisconsin, South Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Central Illinois, Southern Illinois); South (Texas, Oklahoma, Mid-South, Kansas, Southern, Missouri); Great Plains (Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa West, Iowa East, Minnesota South, Minnesota North, Nebraska); and West (California-Nevada-Hawaii, Northwest, Pacific Southwest, Rocky Mountain). Members of the SELC and English Districts nongeographic districts will be placed in the region where their congregation is geographically located. Canadian congregations will be placed in the regions to which they are adjacent. THRIVENT MEMBERS As you may already be aware, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is launching a new charitable grant program and benefit of membership called Thrivent Choice. This program replaces the Care in Congregations grant program which Thrivent funded for a number of years. Trinity Lutheran Church is enrolled to receive gifts from Thrivent Choice. We appreciate your consideration and hope you choose to help direct Choice Dollars to bless the ministries here at TLC. Thrivent Financial will mail letters to eligible members around August 18 with information regarding this opportunity. 4 Trinity Supports Extended Hands Food Bank in Fountain Hills! In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different. Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. We all know and are in contact with people affected by hunger, even though we might not be aware of it. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. The need for food is right here in Fountain Hills. Currently Extended Hands Food Bank is experiencing double the amount of people in need of food assistance compared to 2009! You can help! Extended Hands is in particular need of peanut butter, jelly, pasta, rice, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables all in small (regular size not commercial/economy size)containers to be given out to individuals and families. Bring your donation into Trinity and place in the collection boxes near both main entrances Keep an eye on the Sunday bulletin for news about another Dine Out to the popular Broadway Palms Dinner Theater in Mesa. The play will be Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Information will be available in the next few weeks regarding the date, time, and cost. LWML is on hiatus until the third Saturday of September when the group will meet at 10 am. Until then, remember to continue with your Mite Box (collection will be Sept ). We are also continuing to collect baby items for the VA Maternity Project (see Thank You, p. 2). August s collection will be Rattles, Pacifiers, and Baby Toys.
