2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR We are now in September, fall is here; the leaves are changing colors, harvesting is in full swing, and many are filled with the anticipation of another mediocre Minnesota Vikings season, well, we ll see about that last one, if there s one thing being a fan of professional sports teaches us it is optimism. But the fall isn t all about wheat, beans, and sports. Every fall many activities and parts of life that have been dormant for the past three months are springing back to life school buildings are in use once again, teachers and students coming together to learn readin, ritin, and rithmatic. And right along with the public schools and colleges and other institutions of learning, fall also kicks off another year of confirmation, Sunday School and adult Bible studies here at First Lutheran Church. There will be more detailed information coming out in other ways about these programs, but I thought I d take a few sentences here to point out some of the highlights and events coming up in the near future. September 9th is Rally Sunday in the parish. We will be welcoming all students into Sunday School along with a Sunday School Teacher installation that will be a part of that morning s worship. Class time that day will be activities and fellowship. September 5th will be an orientation session for confirmation students and their families. This is for all students in grades 7-9 and their parents. The confirmation year will be reviewed, expectations will be set out and the calendar will be presented. September 12th will be the first night of confirmation instruction. September 22nd and 23rd will be a night and morning of celebration and dedication as we gather on Saturday evening for a night of song and praise and on Sunday morning to dedicate to holy use the new pews, AV equipment, chancel furnishings, and hymnals. Bishop Mark Narum and Assistant to the Bishop Sherrie Heine will be with us for that morning s worship. September 25th will be another Pub Theology location to be determined, all are invited to this time of informal conversation. September 30th worship will feature stories and experiences from the youth who attended the National Youth Gathering in Houston, T.X. These are just a few of the events this new fall is bringing with it. Continue to watch your bulletins and newsletters for more information on these and other opportunities for fellowship and learning. In Christ, Pastor Ben
3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARISH NURSE PACKING UP: Prevent Backpack Injuries Kids are carrying more than ever in their backpacks and the load is getting heavy! Backpack injuries are a real concern. Doctors treat at least 14,000 children each year with injuries related to heavy backpacks. Dr. Anisha Shetty, an Advocate Children s Medical group pediatrician, offers this advice for keeping your child s back healthy: WATCH. encourage your child or teenager to tell you about numbness, tingling or discomfort in the arms or legs, which may indicate poor backpack fit or too much weight being carried. EASE. Watch your child put on or take off their backpack to see if it is a struggle. If the backpack seems too heavy for the child, have them remove some of the books and carry them in their arms to ease the load on their back. ACT. Do not ignore any back pain in a child or teenager. Seek medical advice and care. PARTNER. Talk to the school about lightening the load. Team up with other parents to encourage changes. STRATEGIZE. Encourage your child to stop at his or her locker when time permits throughout the day to drop off or exchange heavier books. INVEST. If your child has back pain that does not improve, consider buying a second set ot textbooks to keep at home. PRAYER: God, our amazing bodies that you created ca bear a lot and sometimes we pile on more than is good for us. Help us teach our children to care well for their bodies by being gentle with themselves. Amen. Lois Fett Lois is always there for you. Your Parish Nurse Call her at

10 Gospel Seeds - September 2018 A Monthly Update from Western ND Synod Staff It s All About a Relationships The seasons are beginning to shift soon congregations will move into fall program activities. Church newsletters, bulletins and worship announcements are filled with upcoming activities and opportunities for people to share their talents. I read and hear about calls for Church School teachers, Confirmation Mentors, Bible Study participants and leaders the list goes on and on there is no question, we are shifting into a new season of the church year. So, the question arises, why do we put all of this effort into these activities? Really, what is our end goal for church school or confirmation or for that matter adult Bible Study? What is our expected outcome? I have been reading a book which has me pondering seemingly simple questions like that and it has helped me realize something the end goal is a relationship with Jesus, God s only begotten Son. While there is nothing wrong with learning information about God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit head knowledge does not automatically translate into heart knowledge (in other words into a relationship). I am more and more convinced that a life giving relationship with Jesus the Risen Christ is what will lead us to wanting more head knowledge. It is the relationship which will draw us into sharing the hope we have found in God s grace with those around us. So What s the Book The book I mentioned above is Crossing the Bar: Home by Another Way by James G. Johnson. Deacon Jody Lorenz put me on to this book. It is written by a former ELCA pastor, who now owns and operates a bar. Each chapter is a theological reflection on life and faith as he engages people who might never set foot in a church. Johnson has some important insights that church people can learn from, especially in this changing world. Take a read my sense is this could be an excellent Adult Study for any congregation. GIFTS growing a deeper relationship with Jesus One of the resources of this synod for growing a Christ centered relationship is GIFTS (Growing In Faith To Serve). Now almost 3 decades old this gathering of people who wants a deeper relationship with Jesus through prayer, scripture study and conversation always has room for more participants. GIFTS really has components. Probably the best known is the synod-wide component where three or four times a year, seminary professors come here and teach. These are wonderful sessions. The other part of GIFTS is the local gathering where participants gather with a Mentor Pastor. These local gatherings can engage topics of interest to those gathered. They might include diving deep into a book of the Bible, study around prayer, training on home visitation, digging into Luther s Large Catechism really the possibilities are endless. Would you like to learn more Sherie Heine is available to answer questions and help knew local groups get up and running. Walking With You 2018 Annual Appeal You probably remember that the word Synod is a Greek word which can be translated, walking together. That is what we do, as 170 congregations with 57,000 members we walk together in our work of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. As a synod staff our job is to Walk With You through life s journey. We walk together through call process, congregational mission discernment, candidacy, faith formation activities and much more. To help make this journey together possible a synod annual financial appeal has been established. The 2018 Annual Appeal will allow us to meet all needs of synod ministry, to be quick in meeting immediate opportunities as well as funding new ministries as needed. The cost of the appropriate human resources and staff time required to accompany congregations and individuals on their journey of faith is significantly on the increase. Soon many of you will be getting a letter inviting you to participate in this appeal, we hope you will respond. If you do not receive a letter it is because we do not have your address but if you would like to give a financial gift we would be honored. You can mail it to: Synod Appeal, 1614 Capitol Way, Bismarck ND Western North Dakota Synod Council September 14 & 15. If you have items that should be raised let me know. Rev. Mark Narum Serving as Bishop of the Western North Dakota Synod
