2 More Details about 170th Anniversary Members of the Deacons Special Events Ministry Team have been working diligently to plan a day of celebration marking the church s 170th anniversary. Johnny Axselle is providing quality leadership as we head to the finish line. The worship service at 11:00 on October 15 will center around the theme If These Walls Could Talk. Who would be included in the feature stories? Professions of faith? Weddings? Business meetings? Stories told at funeral services? Hymn sings & concerts Celebrations Pastors who have come and gone People supporting others in times of crisis Pains of war Sanctuary filled with people who have been shaken to prayer after 911 What would the stories tell about the changes in our culture? From wood stoves to auto-climate heat pumps with propane backup From dim light provided by oil lanterns to LED lighting in the sanctuary From using old hymnbooks to projecting the words on a big screen From pumping air into the old church organ to switching a key to operate a nice electronic pipe organ we now enjoy From receiving correspondence through the pony express to , texts, tweets,... From reading Bibles printed on thin onion skin paper to electronic devices with a Bible app From people driving a horse & buggy to church to driving cars that will automatically parallel park or provide braking for an inattentive driver or And yet the story is the same God loves the world so much that He sent Alma Hunt State Missions Offering His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Personal testimonies, projected photographs and video clips will all be featured in the 11:00 worship service. We will be singing hymns that the charter members of Mt Olivet sang. We will be enjoying lunch together in the fellowship hall. And then we will have a relaxed time outside where children can play on the playground equipment or on the obstacle course that we are renting or with face painting. And at 2:00, we will be enjoying the music of a band that 2 of our members now play in. South Hill Banks describes their music as traditional to progressive bluegrass with infusions of jazz, rock, soul, and old time Americana. Everyone in the community is welcome! Our church cooperates with some 1400 other churches associated with The Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) an organization of Baptist churches founded in The ministry and mission endeavors of the BGAV are financially supported through Cooperative Program gifts that we contribute each month plus the gifts that we make to the annual Alma Hunt State Missions Offering. Last year, our church gave more than double our $2500 goal for We are currently receiving the Alma Hunt offering for Wouldn t it be wonderful if we could give as much this year as we did last year? In addition to starting new churches and revitalizing established churches and teaching missions and discipleship to children and youth in camp settings, and, VA Baptist volunteers and resources are in Texas and Florida helping flood victims to recover. Thousands of meals are cooked in the Disaster Relief Kitchens, provisions for child care, and even the luxury of a hot shower are some of the gifts that Virginia Baptists are offering those who can t go back to their home. Please include Alma Hunt on the memo line of your check to designate your offering. See for more info. On-Line Directory Now is Available You can now access our 2017 pictorial directory from the church s website. Scroll down the home page to the very bottom where you will see the pictured graphic. Select Member Section (which is password protected) Call, , text, the church office for the super-duper secret password to the member section and then to the online Life- Touch church directory that we have completed. Once you enter the password, you will follow the Church Directory link which will give you access to members names, phone numbers, and mailing addresses! It even has a Google Map link that you may use to find directions to a person s house. That s the title of this year s Christmas Musical, a touching, but exciting collection of songs that tell Jesus story. 30 minute Wednesday night rehearsals (7:30 to 8:00) start on October 4. We have books and part CDs, so you can learn at home or on the road. The music is uplifting and fun, and it is not difficult. See Claudia Phillips if you would like to join in. Missions Report from Kylie Rosenberg I spent 6 weeks this summer in Guatemala. While there I spent two weeks working in an orphanage called Casa Aleluya. They have about 400 orphans and I had the amazing opportunity to work with 12 of them all under the age of five. Due to strict adoption rules most of these kids will never leave the orphanage. This really made me feel like I needed to try my hardest to make their time in the orphanage enjoyable. They had very few toys so most of the time was spent teaching them about personal hygiene or making up games. This really opened my eyes to appreciate the things I have in my life. Not only do I now appreciate the material things in my life but I appreciate the food that I have provided to me. There was one morning when I arrived at the orphanage and all 12 kids were sharing one muffin. This was really eye open- ing to me and changed the way I view food in my life. Not only did this trip change my perspective on life but it helped me discover what I want to do after high school. God showed me my passion is working with kids and that is what I want to spend my life doing. So thank you all who helped make this trip possible and helped me to have this amazing experience. Our Wednesday night study for youth is entitled, Daring To Be A Daniel, covering the book of Daniel in the Bible. Daniel was a courageous young person who took a stand for his faith and for God. This is a Billy Graham Evangelistic Association youth study. Posted on the outside of our youth room door will be the lessons we are learning from the life of Daniel, plus our memory verses. I invite you to come by and take a look! All youth are welcome to attend Wednesday night study, 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Our first lesson, Dare To Be Different : God is looking for leaders, people who aren t afraid to stand up and be His representative in this world. Name The Art Mural Contest! We had 23 name submissions! Thank you everyone...they were all wonderful! The Youth Committee narrowed it down to their top 7 and Church Council made the final decision on September 18 at their meeting. The name of the Art Mural is: Faith, Freedom, Future
