Reunion Sunday - September 9 th Our 9:00am education for children and adults begins a new season and worship will begin at 10:30am. Recognition will be given for a variety of things at worship including: family with most attendance, youngest and oldest members, new members and so much more. 1 st ever Ministry Fair Sunday September 16 th Before worship, beginning at 9am, tables will be set up around the fellowship hall for all to see the many ministries happening at St. Mark s and in the ELCA. Plan to bring items for the Food Pantry, donations for various missions, see what s happening with Sunday school, sign the advocacy petition and be a part of God s calling to be disciples to neighbors near and far. These are great events to bring your family and friends to worship! This is a special newsletter mailing to everyone on our St. Mark s list. Please note that we now most newsletters. 4 Pastor s Thoughts As Reunion (rally) Sunday approaches September 9th, many people are planning new things. Pastor will try new things for worship, Sunday school teachers prepare new plans to engage the children in God s love. Confirmation and Adult students prepare to learn more about faith and what scripture reveals to us. Our Global Mission team prepares to host our First Ministry Fair September 16th in which all the ministries of our church are shared. For the first time we will have a garage sale on the weekend of all town garage sales. We have a NEW chairlift to assist people in joining our basement dinners and events and soon we will have a NEW ramp for easier access to worship. Humans are wired for fresh starts. We respond to new stimuli as a part of our learning processes. It allows us to grow, to push forward into creating new stories, new inventions, to adapt. Even God seems to think new starts are pretty sweet. Here are 7 verses on what the Bible says about them to usher in your new beginning today no matter what your age or situation. And he who was seated on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. Revelation 21:5 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. Psalm 40:3 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 11:19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24 See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. Isaiah 65:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Because of the LORD s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 What new thing will you enjoy, learn, appreciate or try out today? Try out a new thing at the ministry of St. Mark s! 5 St. Mark s All Town Garage Sale September 28th & 29th St. Mark s will be having a garage sale the weekend of September 28 th & 29 th when Polo has their All Town Garage Sales. Clean out your basement, garage and closets and see what you would like to get rid of. Leave items that are clean and in good condition in the basement marked garage sale. Volunteers are needed to help sort items earlier in the week and to help work at the garage sale on Friday and Saturday. Please contact Jeanne or Laurel if you are available to help. Greeting cards donations are needed to keep the social card ministry going. Especially, birthday, sympathy and get well cards. Blank cards would also be appreciated. Donations can be put in Amanda Long s mailbox. THANK YOU! Come to Bible Study! Try it! You will enjoy it! Our week day study will be on Thursdays again at 11:15am (after prayer group) until 12:30pm. This Fall we will begin by request studying the Psalms. We might even write our own Psalm! Psalm means to pluck as in making music and the poetry and lyrics tell us about the ups and downs of human life. Bring a friend or two! Bring your favorite bible or a bible may be borrowed from church. Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:00 am while the youth are in Confirmation and Sunday school come and learn how challenging and thought provoking the bible can be. Kent Anders always leads interesting discussions on the scriptures from the Celebrate Insert that day (which makes worship more interesting) and sometimes current events are also discussed! 6 Finance News St. Mark s people are known to be very generous people in the ministry of our Polo church and in the needs of the world. We do have a shortfall that was identified by the Finance Team. We are about $5000 short over last year s giving and this will impact many of our ministries. If you haven t given a gift to the ministry of the church for a while please consider doing so. If you are a regular donor please consider an extra donation. We are including a form to help people who may wish to include a monthly gift to the church by automatic draw in your bank account. Many people do this and even giving $10-$20 every month can make a big difference in securing worship and other benefits that the church provides. There are many special ministries that you may give to including: building and property, education, global mission and our 150 th Anniversary project. St. Mark s church council 4

7 Sunday School starts September 9 th!! Ages 3 (potty trained) fifth grade Sundays at 9:00am Videos, crafts, games, songs & snacks all about Jesus Confirmation Plans for Pastor will be leading 2 confirmation classes this year. There will be a 6 th and 7 th grade class (2 year program) And a 8 th and 9 th grade class (1 year program) They will meet on alternate Sunday mornings from 9-10am. There will also be a Collaborative Confirmation Event one Wednesday evening a month at LOMC for all. More information will be sent to parents as well as schedules and expectations. If you know someone interested in the program, please contact Pastor. 150 th Anniversary Celebration is May 3 rd 2020 Next meeting is Friday, October 19 th at 10:00am. Please join us! We want your ideas and stories for this BIG Celebration. Youth Plans for Pastor will plan 3 youth group events for 5 th -12 th grades If you would like to help Pastor at confirmation or at a youth event please let her know. St. Mark s gymnasts earn awards! Kale and Kameron Grobe recently participated in the United States Tumbling & Trampoline Association s National Championship event. Kale received sixth place in his flight, 11 th overall and Kameron took first both in his flight and overall. Congratulations! 5

8 Do you know how to sew? The St. Mark s quilters are always looking for help sewing their quilts. We are also in need of large pieces of fabric, sheets, blankets and bed skirts. The quilters meet the 3 rd Tuesday of every month and would love to see new faces! Church Council Highlights August Pastor s Report: This summer has been filled with meetings and planning of the September classes that will begin soon. There have been hospital visits, worship at Polo Rehab and 5 pre-marital counseling sessions this month. I have been blessed to have my family visit this summer. Lori our secretary has had her week vacation and I am planning to take off August 27th September 4th. I am looking for a preacher to cover for me September 2nd. - Worship & Music: We have been blessed with special music this summer by many including Cheryl Goeking and Beth Wiegmann recently. August 19th Doug Knapp will offer music and August 26th the Polo Dulcimer group will do most of the worship service music. An offering is needed for them. - Education: A Sunday school teachers meeting is scheduled for Thursday August 23rd. Sunday school, confirmation classes, and adult bible study resume September 9th. Materials have been ordered for Confirmation. Letters were sent to Confirmation parents and students for a meeting August 19th after worship. The first Confirmation cluster meeting called E4C (Everyone for Christ) will be Wednesday September 19th, 5:30-7:30pm at LOMC Oregon. - Worship & Hospitality: A note has been added to the screen before service to remind us to be quiet & prepare yourself for worship during the prelude. May 9th the Central Conference of Pastors worshipped at St. Marks. Pastor asked the committee to help with coffee & clean up. Decorations were discussed. We will be looking at different options to decorate during the upcoming seasons. 2 teams of people will be going out on visitations in the next couple of weeks. - Global Mission: A meeting was held August 9th and Tracey Anders gave a report on her trip to Honduras with Bill Hare. She shared the challenges of the Honduran people. Diane Rasmussen reported the Tanzanian Nursing project has met its goal of $102,000. Diane also mentioned what a joy it is to belong to a congregation who cares about global mission and actually engages in action. The group is considering support of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana in the future. More information is being gathered about Bread for the World advocacy organization. Orphan Sunday is November 11th which may be highlighted at worship. September 16th will be St. Mark s first Ministry Fair and set up will be September 6th. A newspaper article for the Fair is being drafted. - Fellowship: Laurel & Jean would like a clean up day August 15th prior to the Roast Beef Supper. - Property: Oran is waiting for a call from the plumber at the parsonage. - Polo Council of Churches: A meeting was held July 24th and Suzanne Sorenson represented St. Mark s. - Youth Group: Pastor will plan 3 youth activities this year. I am always looking for youth leadership help. - Old Business: Access Committee Update - Resolution passed for both projects. The contract for the chair lift was signed & half of the money needed to install the chair lift has been sent as per the contract. Steve has assured that he can have the chair lift installed before the Roast Beef Supper. The contract for the ramp has been signed & half the money needed for its installation was sent. A completion date has not been set but it will be done between 2 Sunday services. 6

9 Special Congregational Meeting Minutes St. Mark s Lutheran Church July 22nd, 2018 Special Congregational Meeting Re: Handicap Accessibility at St. Mark s Council President Kent Anders called the meeting to order after church services were over. Quorum was declared. Merla was invited to speak and made a presentation. Bob Cassens also made remarks. The project being proposed is to install a chairlift on the basement stairs and install a ramp into the sanctuary and remove a full pew on each side of the sanctuary up front. The proposed chairlift and new outlet will cost $6,460. The ramp project will cost $4,754. Many questions were asked from the floor and discussion followed. A vote was held. There were 33 yes votes to install both and 18 no votes. Motion to adjourn by Bob. Cliff second. Polo Community Council of Churches Minutes for July 22, 2018 COB Devotions: Prepared by Leslie, given by Bill. In part, The strength of God to lead us and show us the way. God has the strength we need. Minutes: Motion by Bill, second by Suzanne, approved as presented. Treasurer: Bible School $ Honduras Mission $ Hungry Neighbor $ General Fund $ (includes $ garden grant money). A Thank you note was received by a recipient who was housed at the motel for one night. Motion by Ron, second by Suzanne, approved. VBS: Average daily attendance was 18, 15 children responded to the gospel for salvation. Forty-four attended the evening program. Those who did not register a home church will be contacted for follow-up. Thanks to all that helped, special thanks to PCCC for the donation of $250. Open Bible Church budgets a large share of the costs. Honduras: Bill and Tracey will go to Honduras on August 1st to help celebrate a graduating Ag Engineer who has been sponsored since she was in Kindergarten. Kids Café : Marla reported attendance of daily. Monday July 30th will be the last day. Community Meal: August 27th hosted by Faith DC and Pine Creek. Five or six people have asked for gluten free meals. Community Garden: Swiss chard was taken to the pantry this am. Second Hand Rose: Sharon reported a deficit of $ C of C Pledge Form: Will be discussed again at the September meeting. Nominating Committee for Officers 2019: Jim Miller, Suzanne, Ron Food Pantry: Needs include soup, fruit(no pears) paper towels, lg diapers, sugar T. paper Vespers: Crossroads Ron Mentoring Program: Begins for the school year. Continue with mentors last period of the school day. Sarah Schlegel, teacher at Aplington Middle School, is also asking for volunteers from 11:10 am to 11:50 am daily. Christmas Baskets for 2018: Hosts St. Marks and St. Marys. Suggestion for their planning to begin now. Crop Walk: October 14th, Oregon Methodist Church. Charlotte is Polo s representative. Ron reported painting had been completed at the Pool Park of the picnic tables and bleachers. Next Meeting: September 25th, 7 pm, FUMC 7

10 Polo Food Pantry needs Coffee, cheese, cake mixes, canned chicken, tea bags, pancake mix, cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, boxed potatoes, peanut butter, juice, deodorant, pain reliever, toilet paper, lg. child's diapers, wipes. Sunday School supply needs Drink mixes, paper cups and paper plates, napkins and paper towels. Are you celebrating an Anniversary or milestone Birthday?? Let us know!
