4 Pastor s Thoughts Brothers and sisters in Christ, Every year, Pastors are required to send a report to the Bishop of the Synod. We are asked to reflect on the most significant developments, events or accomplishments in the life and ministry of the church. I was very pleased to write that St. Mark s had an increase in worship attendance this year, as well as an increase in mission. The report included our increase in ministering to young children, and the addition of a handicapped ramp and chairlift to assist people of all ages. I mentioned that several of the members of St. Mark s have served in mission work at home and overseas. Many of the congregation members have been giving support to our Seminarian as well. I wrote that our worship has more energy and that we have had a number of new members including others who felt that St. Mark s is their church family without membership. Of course there were baptism, funeral, new member and salary statistics to be reported. Another question that was asked was about the focus of ministry for I wrote of our plans to celebrate our 150 th Anniversary and increase worship, hospitality and mission focus. There are practical things to be addressed this year including restoration and rental of the parsonage and a new sign in front of the church. My personal focus s will be on building leadership, continuing evangelism and emphasizing a stewardship sense of financial giving. When asked how the Bishop and Synod could be supportive I responded by asking for prayer and resources in the area of stewardship. I am pleased to share that our January-February stewardship focus is yielding some contributions and automatic giving interest. Praise God! There is a long way to go in raising our awareness in giving to the church for the ministry of Christ. In my grandparent s time, tithing was strongly emphasized and later it seemed as though the church got pushy for money as the tithing generation passed on. There is no need to be pushy; however scripture calls us to tithe, to give, to support the proclamation of Christ Jesus with financial commitment. I do hope that many will read the article in this newsletter called When Enough is Enough. This article explains that for the church to grow in every way, recognizing abundance is the key. The attitude of scarcity must stop. It is only when we look forward that we live out the faith. Looking back to how things were only holds the church back and keeps the church from any change and progress that expands the love of God. As we begin observing Lent this month, I pray that each of you will experience a deeper sense of God s love for you and that you will reflect that to others. Grace, mercy and peace to you, Pastor Terrie The Bridge Ministry Project This is a Polo Community Council of Churches program for students who either don't have enough food at home or don't have time to get food in the time between activities after school. Beth Wiegmann monitors the program and says the program is greatly appreciated however, more food is needed. She suggested granola bars, crackers & cheese packs, small boxes of cereal, small soup bowls, etc. Food can be dropped off at St. Mark s. Thursday Bible Study 11:15am -12:30pm The Thursday Bible Class continues the study of the book of Acts. This is beautiful scripture. Luke and Acts were written by the same source and Acts gives us great insight how to be the church of Christ. Bring a friend, bring or borrow a bible and walk a little closer with the Lord through scripture study. 2

11 When Enough is Enough By Rev. David Loleng And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19. and be content with what you have Hebrews 13:5 Our culture has convinced us that abundant life is about getting more - more of anything that can be better, newer, faster, and in our hands sooner. The anxious urge to consume now and pay later is fed by a sense of scarcity. Advertising preys on these fears; the average person in the USA is bombarded by over 4,000 advertisements each day. Ads often work by implying our lives are inadequate and unfulfilled, illustrating that we somehow need every excess we want. This ubiquitous consumerism is diametrically opposed to the abundant life Jesus reveals (John 10:10). Forces of our culture s consumerism have even weaseled their way into our stewardship language and ideas. In a theology of scarcity, we believe there will not be enough for everyone, and doubt that God will provide for us. The scarcity mentality can plunge us into toxic suspicion and bitter competition. To heal from this scarcity mentality, many people focus on shifting to an abundance mentality. But current forms of this model do not resonate with everyone. There is true scarcity in contemporary society - a scarcity of resources, opportunities, and security - a reality that hits hardest for people in historically exploited communities of color, cities in decline, and emerging adults facing a changed economy. Recognizing that God provides for us out of God s abundance does not dissolve our struggles. We must also be wary of how abundance mentality can lead to a nuanced form of prosperity gospel, which misleadingly attributes material scarcity to a lack of faith. As I have talked with a wide range of church leaders about stewardship and generosity, sufficiency has surfaced as a concept distinct from both scarcity and abundance. Lynn Twist, author of The Soul of Money, explains that: Sufficiency is not the same as abundance (abundance is more than we need it is excess). Sufficiency is precise. It means that things are sufficient, exactly enough. Shifting from mindsets of scarcity or out-of-touch abundance, we should explore a mindset and theology of sufficiency. This approach can move us from fear and denial to creative possibilities in relation to our resources. We find a biblical example of God s sufficiency in Exodus. God provided daily for the people wandering in the desert, sending manna to eat. The catch was that the manna would spoil after a day, so they could not store it and thus relied on God every day. In Exodus 16:16-18, God instructs the people to measure the manna with a device called an Omer (with a volume of about two quarts) for each person, so that there would be enough for each person. When they measured it with an Omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed (16:18). What if we applied this sufficiency mentality to our lives? What if we strived for enough rather than the excess of capturing abundance? And what if the abundance that we might be blessed with could be used for the common good? Having a sufficiency mindset can lead us to live more simply, to experience more contentment, to live with greater gratitude and generosity, to re-calibrate our lives to what God desires, and to use our resources for God s purposes, and by extension, the common good. As Lynne Twist goes on to write: There is a principle of sufficiency, and it is as follows: When you let go of trying to get more of what you don t really need, which is what we are all trying to get more of, it frees up immense energy to make a difference with what you have to be known for what we allocate rather than what we accumulate. Maybe such an approach to allocation, to stewardship of the resources available, is what Jesus meant when helping us transform our ideas of abundant life. 9
12 Recycling We all love the convenience of plastic afforded to our lives. But bear in mind that these myriad inorganic materials created and used to intensify color or retard flammability could be coming at an environment cost that is too dear to part with. Use plastic discriminately and recycle whenever possible. As responsible consumers, we all know that these days, our dead batteries go to a "special" recycling place. Same deal with our electronics. This latter category includes salvageable precious metals, steel and copper, all of which can be reused. Obsolete cell and tract phones, along with other outlived contraptions of course require specialized collection and processing. Everyone should "know better" than to carelessly discard what can be productively refurbished. So let's talk about plastic...plastic that has a short-lived application (one time usage) quickly becomes refuse debris all across and nation on a never ending global scale. Plastic trash enters our waterways and eventually reaches ocean dead zones such as the Pacific Garbage Patch located in the North Pacific Gyre. This so-called "patch" is clogged with plastic refuse, while beneath the surface lurks an oily sludge of chemical toxins that travels far and wide. I have compiled fun facts to know about plastic that may both surprise and disappoint many of us plastic consumers. Plastic never biodegrades. Instead, it changes form and is eventually ingested by all matter of fish and fowl. Plastic's inevitable and toxic synthetic toxins are absorbed back into our systems with a potentially dangerous impact on our health. That notion aside, here's some stuff I found on the internet about recycling in general... 1) Cellophane is not plastic. Although it can biodegrade, it is not compostable. It will only be recycled along with cardboard and packing materials. 2) Those insidious Walmart bags will be recycled in bulk, so drop your bag collection at your local library or supermarket. These bags are not processed for reuse if disposed of in normally for recycle refuse. 3) If the plastic item contains no imprinted numerical code, it's probably not recyclable. 4) If the material to be recycled is to be reused, all debris must be free of both food residue and moisture. If recyclables do become saturated, they are no longer able to be processed by the system. Never put a used pizza box in for recycle, oil and grease seep into the liquid mash. 5) Loose caps, along with paper scraps, clog processing conveyer belts and jam machinery...dispose of caps by replacing them on the original item...otherwise, into the landfill it goes! 6) Paper towels, napkins and facial tissue or straws are never to be recycled. 7) Ceramics, pottery, light bulbs, and any shattered glass can likewise never be recycled. 8) Most "disposable" products contain chemical coatings that disallow for recycling. Among these included are some cups, paper plates, juice boxes, yogurt cups, and even out-used butter tubs. 9) Tote your single use Walmart bags to your local library or another collection site, since these articles are not processed from individual recycling efforts. 10) Try to cut down on plastic usage by carrying your own reusable bags when shopping. Clerks are generally happy to pack your own bags for you. 10
