1 Cornerstone News July 30 Aug 12, 2015 July 9th is the Sunday of All Church Camp Pastor s Column: Church Yard Sale for Nepal Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 Church Yard Sale Details-at-a-Glance : Sale: Brothers and sisters, are you like me do you have a lot of stuff? Stuff, for my usage here, being the nonessentials. Those belongings you don t have to have, and maybe even only make use of once in awhile, but that we all hang on to, on a shelf or in a corner, where they live on, should we need them. Maybe in some prior year you had a use for that knick knack, or that tool, or that gadget. But now it falls more into the category of the stuff that lives in boxes on shelves in your garage, or plastic tubs stacked in the attic, or gathering dust in some corner of your basement or shed or crawlspace okay, I m trying to describe anywhere we keep our keepsakes. The stuff we don t get rid of but the stuff we certainly could live without. Saturday, Aug 22 nd 9am-2pm in our Lot Drop Off Items: Sunday morning, August 16 th, or 9am-3pm Mon-Fri that week. Items Needed: Electronics, Household Items, Toys, Tools, Knick Knacks, Sports Equipment, etc. No Clothing or Large Furniture. Maybe from a Christian point of view we d call these extra blessings. The fat, as it were. And while not everyone has stuff in this sense, I d bet most who receive our little church newsletter would have at least some of this stuff. For me it s redundant household items, and the sports equipment that was purchased with good if unfulfilled intentions, and the bits of furniture and knickknacks that surf the flotsam in our garage, never quite finding a use or a spot. It s not junk for me; we ve held on for a reason. But neither is it the essentials, by a long shot! Yet meanwhile, so many in our world struggle with less, and in so many ways. To jump to a people we are hoping to assist: this past spring thousands of households lost all they had during two monster earthquakes that shook the nation of Nepal and surrounding regions. At the time our Cornerstone church was in the midst of special offerings for the transportation we were assisting with in northern India with Pastor Joseph. Having raised some $16,000+ toward that awesome need last spring, here in late summer we have opportunity to reach back and target assistance at those households who lost so much during those quakes; people who, by so many of our standards, started with much less to begin with! And now many families are left with rubble and face rebuilding their homes and indeed, their lives. Continued on Next Page...

2 It is with that need before us that I invite our individual Church households to contribute toward our cut the fat Church Yard Sale for Nepal. The cut the fat part being about our stuff the extra, the nonessential, the fat our households may harbor. Could we consider our good extra household items, electronics, tools, toys, knickknacks and like items and offer them for sale in a joint yard sale as a faith community, with all the proceeds benefiting these families in a less-fortunate area of our world, who have in turn lost all they had? I love and am inspired by God s Word in the verse above from the author of Hebrews, where in a larger passage on service that is pleasing to God, they call the Church to, Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, and, Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:5, 16 For those who are able, I am inviting every household (read: family, couple or single) to consider contributing something to our yard sale whether that s a lot or a single item, whether it s something big or something small. I bet we all have some sort of stuff we can cut for the sake of helping others! Please bring those donations to our church building the week leading up to the sale: we ll collect items in the conference room, foyer and hallways during services on Sunday, August 16 th, and then Monday-Friday that week, the 17 th -21 st, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The sale will then be held on Saturday, August 22 nd from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. 100% of proceeds and donations will go toward assisting Nepalese people through emergency relief in Nepal, via specialized giving through UMCOR the United Methodist Committee on Relief, a denominational disaster relief organization active worldwide in making a hands-on difference in the lives of victims of natural disasters. We are also inviting volunteers to sign up to assist that Saturday in two-hour shifts, by signing up on the long table in the foyer. Look for the sheet marked Church Yard Sale Volunteers. We also have need of some to come early to set up, and some trucks to help us haul leftovers up to Goodwill at 2:15 that afternoon. Again, just sign up! gift. For more information about UMCOR and their work in Nepal and around the world visit them online, at Donations toward this special project in Nepal can also be supported via donations through their website, or through mailed donations at: P.O. Box 9068 New York, NY On mailed donations you must include Advance # on your check or noted with your Would your family/household consider contributing to this sale, to benefit a people in need a world away? May we lift grateful hearts to God for what we have, and for those who can contribute, may God use these small acts to plant seeds of healing and rebirth in the lives of these precious people! Thank you in advance for your help and contribution that week, Pastor James Murphy
