C Amen (10:30) Special Music: The Church s One Foundation -Bell Choir FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31: The days are surely coming, says e LORD, when I will make a new covenant wi e house of Israel and e house of 32 Judah. It will not be like e covenant at I made wi eir ancestors when I took em by e hand to bring em out of e land of Egypt a covenant at ey broke, ough I was eir husband, says e 33 LORD. But is is e covenant at I will make wi e house of Israel after ose days, says e LORD: I will put my law wiin em, and I will write it on eir hearts; and I will be eir God, and ey 34 shall be my people. No longer shall ey teach one anoer, or say to each oer, "Know e LORD," for ey shall all know me, from e least of em to e greatest, says e LORD; for I will forgive eir iniquity, and remember eir sin no more. A C The Word of e Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 46 God is our ref- uge and streng,* a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, ough e ear be moved,* and ough e mountains be toppled into e deps of e sea; 3 ough its waters rage and foam,* and ough e mountains tremble at its tumult. 4 The LORD of hosts is wi us;* e God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5 There is a river whose streams make glad e cit- y of God,* e holy habitation of e Most High. 6 God is in e midst of her; she shall not be overrown;* God shall help her at e break of day. 7 The nations make much ado, and e king- doms are shaken;* God has spoken, and e ear shall melt away. 8 The LORD of hosts is wi us;* e God of Jacob is our stronghold. 9 Come now and look upon e works of e LORD,* what awesome ings he has done on ear. 10 It is he who makes war to cease in all e world;* he breaks e bow, and shatters e spear, and burns e shields wi fire. 11 "Be still, en, and know at I am God;* I will be exalted among e nations; I will be exalted in e ear." 12 The LORD of hosts is wi us;* e God of Jacob is our stronghold. SECOND READING: Romans 3: Now we know at whatever e law says, it speaks to ose who are under e law, so at every mou may be silenced, and e whole world may be held 20 accountable to God. For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deeds prescribed by e law, for rough e law comes e knowledge of sin. 21But now, apart from law, e righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by e law and e prophets, 22e righteousness of God rough fai in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For ere 23 is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of e glory of God; ey 24 are now justified by his grace as a gift, 3 4
3 rough e redemption at is in Christ 25 Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective rough fai. He did is to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over e sins 26 previously committed; it was to prove at e present time at he himself is righteous and at he justifies e one who has fai in Jesus. * GOSPEL: John 8: Then Jesus said to e Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my 32 word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know e tru, and e tru will 33 make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you 27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By at of 28 works? No, but by e law of fai. For we hold at a person is justified by fai apart from works prescribed by e law. A The Word of e Lord. C Thanks be to God. mean by saying, 'You will be made free'? 34Jesus answered em, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a 35 slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in e household; e son 36 has a place ere forever. So if e Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN LBW # 233 Thy Strong Word The unfolding of your words gives light. Psalm 119:130 SERMON * HYMN LBW # 369 The Church s One Foundation Christ is all, and in all. Colossians 3:11 * NICENE CREED C We believe in one God, e Faer, e Almighty, maker of heaven and ear, of all at is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, e only Son of God, eternally begotten of e Faer, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being wi e Faer. Through him all ings were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by e power of e Holy Spirit he became incarnate from e virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered dea and was buried. On e ird day he rose again in accordance wi e Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at e right hand of e Faer. He will come again in glory to judge e living and e dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in e Holy Spirit, e Lord, e giver of life, who proceeds from e Faer and e Son. Wi e Faer and e Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken rough e prophets. We believe in one holy caolic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for e forgiveness of sins.
