2 Page 2 February Youth Ministry Student Ministries Update! We have been blessed with several things and others have challenged us. Our youth numbers have fluctuated in the past month, which is normal for January. The leader team has remained strong and dedicated, but we could still use some more help. We are serving fifty youth on average per week; this stretches us out when we have small groups. We only have one leader with nine to twelve youth in our middle school age boys and girls. If anyone would be willing to help out for a week or two and share it with someone else it would be greatly appreciated. Contact Paul if you would like to help. We are currently giving our Testimonies as youth leaders and tying it in with the current Sermon series of discovering a deepening relationship with Jesus and His mission. We have one youth that would like to be baptized this spring, and we will be encouraging others to take that step. We are ready to start the process of getting students signed up for our Mexico mission trip in July. If anyone is interested in that work, please let us know. There will be some training for this journey. Please continue to pray for our youth and ministry; it is very important and greatly appreciated! Our work is bearing fruit and impacting young lives, for some of them we are the only place that they get to here the message of Jesus and salvation! --Thane Moore As the winter weather season comes upon us we would like to inform you as to where you can check to see any closing information for Sunday mornings or Wednesday nights. Thank you for partnering with us to help fulfill our Lord s Great Commandment and Commission. --Roger & Brenda Daum Page 3 Insights for Relationships from Pastoral Counselor Roger Daum We Americans live in a nation with an amazing road system enabling us to drive hundreds of miles safely and quickly. We have road signs that guide, or warn us of danger ahead. Wise and safe drivers pay attention to those signs. God gives us warning signs for the road of life. We find many of those signs in His Word. In Hebrews we find six warning signs that will help us safely arrive at our eternal destination. These warnings also have a very practical application for marriage and family relationships? What are these warnings? 1. Pay more careful attention so we do not drift away. (Heb. 2:1) - Just as a driver can drift out of their lane and have a wreck, so we can begin to drift away from God and applying His Word to our lives and relationships resulting in a relationship wreck that hurts others and ourselves. We must be intentional and pay close attention to obeying God s Word and wisdom. A similar warning to no become spiritually lazy is found in Heb. 6:12. If we ve started to drift or become spiritually complacent it s time to turn back to the Lord and His Word to avoid a relationship wreck. 2. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts. (Heb. 3:7-15) The writer of Hebrews uses the Israelites and their refusal to walk by faith and enter the Promised Land as a warning to us. They knew what they were to do, they had the presence and promises of God to go before them and empower them to live by faith, but they drifted away from God s plan and hardened their hearts. The same thing can happen to us. The writer goes on to say, See to it brothers, (fellow believers) that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily,, so that none of you may be hardened by sin s deceitfulness (v.12-13). Broken relationships and marriages are the result of the hardening of the hearts of those who make up the relationship. We must not allow our hearts to become insensitive or hardened to God or one another. 3. Do not stay spiritually immature. (Heb. 5:12-14) These believers should have matured spiritually to where they were teaching others the meat of God s Word, but were still in need of milk and were spiritual babies unskilled in the Word of righteousness. They had heard God s Word but were not applying it and remained spiritually stunted. Spiritual maturity results when we as believers use and apply the Word in their lives and relationships so we can distinguish good and evil. Believers in the church at Corinth were unloving and experiencing all kinds of relationship problems because of spiritual immaturity (1 Cor. 3:1-3) demonstrated by a lack of love. It was time for them to grow up spiritually and put childish relational behavior behind them (1 Cor. 13). We must do the same. 4. Do not neglect fellowshipping with other believers. (Heb. 10:24-25) These believers were going through trials. Some of them were neglecting gathering together with other Christians (church attendance). When this happens, Christians begin to grow spiritually cold just as live coals in a fire quickly die down when separated from other burning coals. Instead, we are to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Our involvement with other believers stimulates us to grow in love and enhances godly relationships. 5. Do not become bitter or fall into sexual sin. (Heb.12:15-16) - These believers were experiencing persecution and abuse and were in danger of missing the grace of God that would enable them to forgive. Bitterness troubles the carrier and defiles others around a bitter person. The writer goes on to warn, See to it that no one is sexually immoral or godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights. In Heb. 13:4 we read Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriagebed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (Continued on page 6)

5 Page 5 together. Core Values Loving Others Though there is great variety in how God has made us, we are united in our faith relationship with Him as Christians. We also share some core biblical values as his followers in the Parkview family. These values help us promote and pursue unity with each other as we follow Jesus One of our core values is loving others. We are determined to love people as Christ commands. This love should be genuine and practical. In John 13:35 Jesus says By this all men will know that you are My disciples, of you have love for one another. He repeats in John 15:12, This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Love, real love impacts what we do and how we do it. Love for people should be a defining mark of who are as a church family. Love is the goal of our spiritual growth and the bond that unites us as we serve God together. (1Tim 1:5) When facing a challenge or decision we must ask, What is the loving way to engage this situation? Love does not always give in, but it seeks what is ultimately best. Love allows us to accept each other as we are AND to encourage each other to move forward in holiness and spiritual growth. Such love goes a long way to building our unity as we build each other in Christ. Food Basket January 2018 With this month s Food Pantry day on January 20, 2018, we had at least 25 volunteers helping serve the 88 families who came to supplement their personal pantries with complimentary food items. 149 bags left the building this month, escorted to our guests vehicles by our strong young (and young at heart) volunteers. The staples that are given with each bag include one frozen meat item, one jar of peanut butter, two cans of vegetables, one can of fruit, one can of tuna, one bag of pasta, one box of cereal, one bag of beans and one of rice, one jar of pasta sauce, two cans of soup, and other items. The miracle we saw this month was that after December Pantry, our shelves at the Refuge were completely barren. Not a bag or a can of any kind was left in the building to pass onto someone in need. With the help of financial assistance from our church congregation and food donations from various sources, our team of volunteers were able to have enough food to prep 225 or more bags stocked full of the items mentioned above without taking much money out of our budget to do so! We are so Blessed by the generosity of others, God s grace, and His ability to provide for those in need! Another great blessing occurred when one of our regular guests shared with a volunteer that she got up the morning of the Food Pantry excited because she knew she was going to get to spend time drinking coffee with some of her friends she has met by attending this mission, both other guests and volunteers. It is such a blessing to me that there are no barriers between humans in this place. No socioeconomic lines, nor racial tension...just human connection and that is most beautiful. Our hearts and our pantries are full! Let us continue to serve this ministry together, whether you share your time or your financial gifts to provide others in need...and there are so many people in our community in dire need of food for their bellies and food for their souls. Thank you so very much for contributing to such a special cause that serves Jesus.

6 Page 6 Mahalo Nui Loa There is something special about the Hawaiian Islands, they call it the Aloha spirit, a spirit in the sense that it is a prevailing attitude on the islands. Everyone just seems to be a little less in a hurry, a little friendlier, a little more relaxed. I think it must be that the weather is almost always perfect, and everywhere you look, God s creative beauty is on display, you just can t get away from it, it is spectacular. It s easy to understand the words of the bible where it says that all of creation will display God s glory. The wonderful thing is that you don t have to go somewhere special to experience God s glory, you just have to open your eyes and see it, He created the entire universe to remind us of Him no matter where you are, again, you can t escape it. Look around, his handiwork is everywhere. I want to teach you Hawaiian phrase to help you get started, Mahalo Nui Loa, it means thank you very much. As you look around and start to notice the fingerprints of God around you and in your life, remember to tell him thank you very much, it s one of the best ways to begin to appreciate His goodness and mercy and will help you go deeper in your relationship with Him. Aloha, See you Sunday! Scott Insights for Relationships (Continued from page 3) Unresolved bitterness in the heart often opens a person or spouse up to sexual temptation and sin. Bitterness and sexual sin destroy relationships and we must not allow these sins to become a part of our lives. 6. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have. Heb. 13:5a The pursuit of temporal values results in misplaced priorities which results in relationships with God or people being neglected. To avoid this trap we must keep the Lord Jesus first in our lives. He will fill our hearts with true contentment and enable us to find a proper balance that enhances our relationship with God and our families. May God help us heed these warning signs and experience the blessing the Holy Spirit conveys at the close of this marvelous book. May the God of peace, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Heb. 13:20-21). LIFE Ministry (Another thank you from residents!) Assisted Living Thank you s have been relayed to Sue since the fleece blankets have been delivered. Several ladies have stopped Sue to ask her to tell those Baptist ladies thank you for the warm blankets, we snuggle up under them and get all nice and warm. They enjoyed the cookies to. Long Term Several ladies have wanted to write thank you notes for the nice, warm fleece blankets. Since it is hard for some of them to see and write, I let them know I would be saying THANK YOU for them They were happy about this. I enjoy seeing them snuggle under the blankets for a nap, on there beds ready to use over their laps when in there lift chairs or wheelchairs. They are still talking about the nice people that took their time to make them for people they didn t know. Thank you Baptist Church ladies. The cookies were appreciated as well. (I would have offered to help them write thank yous, but that would have compromised HIPPA. We as volunteers try to be very careful about not releasing names from the nursing home). Thank you to those that pray for LIFE ministry. It is appreciated. --Barb Chase

7 Page 7 Pastor s log February 2018 The View What a blessing to experience deepening of our relationship with Jesus in our January worship! I want to encourage you as we turn the page to a new month to press on in the ways Jesus called you to keep deepening through the year. To help you with that you should let someone else know what steps you are working one. Whether you need encouragement or coaching, our small group leaders, ministry team leaders and pastors would love to be of help with you in working out your step. Good relationships in Jesus family are key to helping all of us grow. My first spiritual growth spurts resulted from people God put on my path in childhood churches. I continue to grow through many of you who continue to sharpen me as we serve together. This kind of coaching isn t just for beginners, it is for all of us. Remember a disciple is someone who has embraced a deepening relationship with Jesus, His family & His mission. We never stop growing and the journey is so worth it. This month we begin a journey through the book of Acts. It shows us how the first disciples embraced Jesus mission. God wrote it so we can learn from their example and do our part in living His Mission in our own time. I encourage you to read along before you come on Sunday s and reread it after. Let God s truths sink deeper so you can go deeper. We focus on Gods word as a priority because it is foundational to our growth with Jesus. Did I tell you what a blessing it is to serve with you? It really is. As we enter February, I look forward to what God has for all of us as we continue deepening together and embrace His mission together. May God bless you as we walk through it with Him. Graciously yours, John Visit Our Website at
