1 1 Cor. 6:18 Flee Sexual Immorality Last week, we considered this passage as a whole, especially Paul s command to glorify God in your body (v. 20). Christian, your body is the place where God dwells by the Spirit. Verse 19: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God. So, glorify God in your body. Today, I would like for us to consider another command in this text. It is found in v. 18. Paul says, Flee from sexual immorality. He uses this phrase in 1 Cor. 10:14 when he says, Flee from idolatry. This term means to escape from something, to get away, or take to flight. This isn t just a casual walk as we look back at something. It isn t just a jog. It is an urgent escape from danger. If you house is on fire and the flames are upon you, what do you do? You don t even have time to grab anything. You get out! You flee the danger. And in the case of sexual immorality, the danger is great. In fact, as we saw last week, the sin of sexual immorality is especially dangerous to the body. See 2 nd part of v. 18: Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. All dirt should be washed off our hands, but pine sap is harder to get off. Sexual sin entangles in a way that others sins do not. It is especially damaging. Boys, Men, especially, Listen to these words! Pay careful attention today! As far as I can tell in my studies, Corinth was full of sexual immorality. Throughout the Roman Empire, the verb to corinthianize meant to corrupt. The Temple of Aphrodite was there, dedicated to Venus or Aphrodite, the goddess of sexual love. This temple was staffed with a thousand priestesses with whom immorality flourished. And to many in that city, fornication was a sacred duty, and even an act of worship. Imagine the temptations, especially for a young man coming out of this kind of life. Look at v. 11: And such were some of you. Although most had been delivered from such lifestyles, some had not. One commentator said it may have been so common that Stop Sleeping with Prostitutes was a study unit in the new members class. But, Paul isn t simply talking about going with a prostitute. It goes much deeper. The word Paul uses in v. 18 is porneia, which is where we get our word pornography. It is also translated as fornication. The term is broad. It includes ANY sexual sin, whether incest, adultery, rape, bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism, etc. Jesus even uses the word for certain cases of divorce and remarriage. And v. 18 begins a longer section (cp. 7) about marriage and divorce. With this in mind, I would define sexual immorality as ANY behavior outside of marriage that results in heightened arousal (as I try to be discreet). This can begin with heavy petting between a girlfriend and a boyfriend, or a number of other scenarios we can all imagine and understand. So, sexual immorality (fornication, porneia) is any kind of unmarried fooling around. And this we must flee! Last week, we saw 3 deeper theological reasons why we must flee sexual immorality. 1) Jesus is Lord. He is risen from the dead. His body was raised and now is glorified. The same applies for us. 2) We are united with Christ. Verse 15: Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? We cannot separate our spirit from our body. And we are united with Christ (by the Spirit). And when we sin against the body we sin against Christ. For He is one with us. 3) Our
2 body does not belong to us. It belongs to Christ. God created us. And, Christ has purchased us with his precious blood. Therefore, glorify God in your body. Today, I would like to add 8 more reasons, especially as they relate to sexual immorality. By God s grace, we will be more equipped (motivated) to flee. (I am indebted to D. Wilson and his book Fidelity especially cp. 2 for many of these truths. 1. Consider the source of sexual immorality. It comes from within us. And, it is called lust. Jesus said, You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matt. 5:27-28). The desire for sexual relations within marriage are good desires. But, there is another desire that can be bad. At the end of the day, porneia begins in the lust of a sinful heart. Because of our sinful nature, in this world, there will always be sinful desires, or lusts. Paul calls these lusts members that must be killed. Col. 3:5 says, Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. What we fight against isn t simply a desire for relations within marriage, but desires down deep within us. To Christians he says, Do not let sin reign in your body so that you obey its passions (Rom. 6:12). Sin reigns in a Christian when that Christian does what his mortal body tells him to do. Hey, take a look at her. Look at this picture a friend sent me on my phone etc. James 4:1-2 says, What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. The same applies to sexual immorality. In 1 Pet. 1:13-15 he says, Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct... Brothers and sisters, our lusts are standard-issue in this life. But, how we handle our lusts is always an indication of whether we are Christian or not. PLEASE LISTEN HERE! The Apostle John says, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world-- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life-- is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. With this in mind, #2. 2. Consider the power of the gospel. Look at Titus 2:11-12: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age... If any man be in Christ he is a new creation, behold old things have passed away, all things are new (2 Cor. 5:17 my translation). I am who I am because of the power of the Gospel of Christ. If I am successful in fighting the lusts of my sinful body, it is because of God s grace in the Gospel of Christ, by the Spirit. We may fight against sin. But, in Christ we win! He makes sure of that. Therefore, look to the Scriptures, especially those places that clearly teach the gospel.
3 3. Consider the fact that life is war. The ongoing process of sanctification is one of war. Or, as Paul puts it, a continual wrestling match. Our mindset must be one of war, not of peacetime. When the USA entered WWII, the entire mindset of our nation changed. Everyone got involved in the war effort. There were great sacrifices, great efforts, amazing pursuits, all to win the war. Such is the Christian life. And, this must be our attitude toward sexual immorality. The world doesn t care about godliness in this area. This is evident everywhere we go. Therefore, we must carry with us (ALWAYS) an attitude of war. And if you think you have won the victory, you haven t. That sin is waiting for an opportune time to raise its head again. Therefore, always Flee. In another place Paul says, But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints (Eph. 5:3). 4. Consider the value of discipline and suffering. Listen to 1 Pet. 4:1-3: Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. Here, Peter uses the discipline and suffering of Christ to help us with our lusts. And I think one of the applications is our own bodily disciplines. Someone who is lazy and self-indulgent in other areas will find it much easier to be lazy and self-indulgent in sexual temptations. Self-control in one area transfers to another. Therefore, learn to be self-controlled in smaller areas that will prepare you for greater ones. This has great applications. Oh, how I have failed greatly in this application in the past (and still do). How are we in how we treat our bodies? Do we show discipline in what we eat or drink? Do we show discipline in how we spend money? How do we show discipline in the use of our free time? Are we disciplined in the simple matters of prayer and Bible study? The list is endless. But, I think the more we learn to discipline ourselves in such areas, the easier it will be to discipline ourselves in the area of sexual morality. 5. Consider the fact that sexual immorality is always accompanied by other sins. Sin is rarely found alone. Sin is more like a cluster of grapes that go together than simply an apple. With sexual immorality, there is usually deception, often followed by outright lies. There is great guilt, which cause the person to treat people close to them differently. There is covetousness because the person, whether single or married, is not content with either his/her spouse, or with the life of godliness that God requires. In the end, it is idolatry, putting something else above God. It has a special effect on the body in a damaging way. On and on we can go. Sexual immorality is filled with mess in every way and all around. 6. Consider the bad examples of others. See 1 Cor. 10:6-8: Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. Examples abound in the Bible. Let me also give 1 from our culture. Ex: Think of all the abortions in our country and the world. You might ask, What does sexual immorality have to do with abortion? In just our country alone, there have been more than 40
4 million abortions to date. And I would venture that the vast majority of these encounters were out of wedlock. From the man s perspective 40 million abortions means 40 million good times, 40 million temporarily satisfied men. At what price? In short, millions of men thought that someone else s life was a reasonable price to pay for their pleasure. THIS IS A BAD EXAMPLE WE MUST NOT FOLLOW. 7. Consider the judgment of God. For this point, I simply want to read some passages. Heb. 13:4-5: Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 1 Cor. 6:9-10: Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. Eph. 5:5: For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Rev. 21:8: But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. (If time, Rom. 1) 8. Husbands, be content with your wife. Husbands especially, one of the keys to keeping the marriage bed undefiled is contentment. Because God will judge, a man is commanded to be content with what he has. Consider Prov. 5:15-21: Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. 16 Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? 17 Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. 18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, 19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. 20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress? For a man's ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. Men who simply look at pornography are not content with what God has given them. Even young unmarried men. Let me ask, Do you think you will marry one of those women you are viewing? Of course not! And one more thing about this passage. Verse 21 says God sees all. We do nothing in secret. At the end of the day, Flee sexual immorality. Run away. Do you remember Joseph when Potiphar s wife continued to pursue him? After continuous pressure from her, Gen. 39:9 tells us Joseph told her, How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? And one day she found him alone and tried to entice him, and even tore his coat from his body. But, what did he do? He fled the house. This is the same word used by Paul. Therefore, we must be like Joseph who ran away from sexual immorality and evil in general because of his love for God and his belief in God s promises. Application: When God tells us to flee from something, there is always the understanding that we pursue something else in its place. 1 Tim. 6:11: But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness... Tim. 2: 22: So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those
who call on the Lord from a pure heart. James 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. We must always remember, love for God from the heart and the pursuit of his righteousness is always the motivation for godliness. 5
