Our Lady of Grace, Pray for us and the Whole world. Amen BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FOR APRIL 2014 Happy Birthday Brothers Fred Rom Walter Schmalstieg William Sosnowski Father Elbano Munoz Happy Birthday Brothers and many Happy Returns NO MONTHLY SOCIAL LUNCHEON IN APRIL The Resurrection of Jesus HE HAS RISEN INDEED Mark When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you. 8 So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Our next social luncheon will be on Wednesday May 21, 2014 at Mama s Restaurant starting at 11:30 AM. We would like to see more of our brother Knights attend. Most of the time father John is there to lead us with a blessing. No council business is discussed, strictly Social.

The March 6 announcement is a "significant step" in the cause for beatification and canonization of Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a native of El Paso and a priest of the Diocese of Peoria. Featured Article Vatican experts OK reported miracle attributed to Abp. Sheen By Catholic News Service and Catholic Post staff A seven-member team of medical experts convoked by the Vatican reported there is no natural explanation for the survival of a child delivered stillborn and whose heart did not start beating until 61 minutes after his birth. The survival of the child, James Fulton Engstrom of Goodfield, now 3 years old and developing normally, was credited by his parents to a miracle attributable to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a Peoria diocesan priest who gained fame for his 1950s television show "Life Is Worth Living" and his 16 years at the helm of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The medical experts' report was announced March 6 in Peoria by the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation, of which Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, is president. "Today is a significant step in the cause for the beatification and canonization of our beloved Fulton Sheen, a priest of Peoria and a Son of the Heartland who went on to change the world," Bishop Jenky said in a statement, available in full here. "There are many more steps ahead and more prayers are needed. But today is a good reason to rejoice." The case will next be reviewed by a board of theologians. With their approval, the case could move on to the cardinals and bishops who advise the pope on these matters. Finally, the miracle would be presented to Pope Francis, who would then officially affirm that God performed a miracle through the intercession of Archbishop Sheen. There is no timeline as to when these next steps might take place. If the Engstrom case is authenticated as a miracle, Archbishop Sheen would be beatified, elevating him from "venerable" to "blessed." A beatification ceremony could conceivably take place in Peoria, according to the foundation, which promotes his sainthood cause. In general, a second miracle would need to be authenticated for canonization. James is the son of Travis and Bonnie Engstrom of Goodfield. Bonnie Engstrom described what happened when she addressed a 2012 gathering of the Midwest region of the Catholic Press Association in Peoria. When Bonnie was pregnant with James, a feeling came over her that "God wants this baby to exist," she said. "Maybe he's going to be the pope. We didn't know, but we were shooting high." During delivery, what caused James to be stillborn was that his umbilical cord had knotted itself, cutting off his blood flow and oxygen supply. The more he progressed through the birth canal, the tighter the knot became. "He was born stillborn," Bonnie said, remembering how "his arms flopped by his side" when she reached for him to hold him. Others at the home birth did CPR and chest compressions for 20 minutes waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Bonnie said she had no pre-composed prayer asking for help from
Archbishop Sheen. "I just kept repeating his name over and over in my head: Fulton Sheen, Fulton Sheen, Fulton Sheen," she recounted. "I didn't know what else to do." At the hospital, James was described as "PEA," for "pulseless electrical activity." Medics tried two injections of epinephrine. Neither worked. A nurse held one of James' feet in an effort to give him some measure of comfort, and Bonnie said she remarked later, "It was so cold, it was so cold. It was like in the saying 'cold and dead.'" Bonnie remembered that a doctor in the emergency room said, "We'll try for five more minutes, then call it," meaning recording the time of death. "If he had known about the previous 40 minutes" of efforts to revive him before arriving at the hospital, she said, "he would have just called it." She added, "They were just about to call it when his heart started beating beats per minute, which is healthy for a newborn. And it never faltered." In an interview with The Catholic Post in September after a tribunal of inquiry was sworn in to begin its invesigation of the alleged miraculous healing -- Bonnie said it gives her joy to think that Archbishop Sheen is still evangelizing through James. "I believe it was Sheen's intercession that played a key role in it, but it was Jesus who healed my son," she said. "It was for his greater honor and glory." Fulton Sheen was born May 8, 1895 in El Paso, located between Peoria and Bloomington. His family moved to Peoria so that Fulton and his brothers could attend Catholic school. He grew up in St. Mary's Cathedral Parish in Peoria where he was an altar server and later ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria. After advanced studies and service as a parish priest in the city of Peoria, Father Sheen was a professor of philosophy and religion at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In the 1930s he became a popular radio personality and later a TV pioneer. His weekly TV program, "Life is Worth Living," eventually reached 30 million viewers and won an Emmy award for outstanding TV program. From 1950 to 1966, he was the national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the United States, the Church's primary missionary apostolate. In 1966, he was named Bishop of Rochester of New York where he served until his retirement in 1969, when he was named honorary Archbishop by Pope Paul VI. Archbishop Sheen died at the entrance to his private chapel in his New York City apartment on December 9, In September 2002, Bishop Jenky officially opened the cause for the beatification and canonization of Fulton Sheen. For six years, the Sheen Foundation, the official promoter of the cause, gathered testimony from around the world and reviewed all of Sheen's writings, before sending their conclusions to the Vatican. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI affirmed the investigation that Sheen had lived a life of heroic virtue and holiness. Sheen was then titled "Venerable." Pending further review by the theologians and the cardinals who advise the pope through the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, should Pope Francis validate this proposed miracle, Sheen could then be declared "Blessed" in a ceremony that could be celebrated in Peoria. Upon the Holy Father signing the decree for the beatification, an additional miracle would lead to the Canonization of Archbishop Sheen, in which he would be declared a saint. 12 Field Agent The Value of Membership Referrals As a Professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate the most is when one of my Brother Knight client or his wife referees another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service of the service I provide. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others to achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I met with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek our membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or yor Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentleman in question. It s always more effective to tell the candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of local councils, we can make sure that we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. Mew members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1,475 Billion to charity and provide an excess of 673 million hours of service. And our membership is merely scratched the surface in North America. Imagine the potential. Fraternally, Bradley Bardon, Field Agent Knights of Columbus, Insurance

We are asking that everyone coming to our meetings to bring some nonperishable food item. Canned goods, pasta, peanut butter, jellies, dried cereal, paper products, etc. Of course we have no place to store these items as food pantries do, so we will continue to take all of the collected food to the local pantries serving Indian Land. The Supreme council has a program that all councils will receive $ for every 500 pounds of food donated. That is a good way to take that money and use it for other charities. Let s take advantage of this program! So far we have contributed over 300 pounds for Thanksgiving and Bel Air pantry. We are almost there!!! Thank You
PRO LIFE Reflection by Randolph Sly "God has assumed Humanity, joining it with Divinity, and kindled in men's hearts new love of me." These words were written by a Roman poet in the Fourth Century. He spent his life finding ways to express the greatest mystery of the world: the incarnation, in which God became man. The womb has been referred to as the "first home of the whole human race." It is the place where life begins, where our stories start. In the womb the great men and women of history began their magnificent march through life. In the womb Divinity met humanity, and God the Son was born into the world. As one of the Fathers of the early church, St. Leo the Great, declared, "Within her spotless womb Wisdom built itself a house and the Word became flesh." I was at the hospital for the birth of my fourth grandchild. Looking through the nursery window at the rows of newly born babies, I began to think of the great stories that would be written about these tiny lives. During his visitation with the Virgin Mary, the angel prophesied to Mary about the life of her child. Here in this hospital, I pondered, what would he say about each of these? Would they meet the one who also came from His mother's womb to redeem the world and kindle our hearts afresh for God? I thanked God for each baby alive and prayed for each story yet to be written. Prayer Heavenly Father, you have made the womb of each woman a very special place. Help us to hold fast to the sanctity of this first home of humanity, remembering the wonderful mystery, that God inhabited the womb of a young woman and came forth as the savior and deliverer of the world. We ask this in the Name of the one who came forth, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

The Cause of Venerable Michael J. McGivney The process of saint making, more properly called the process for canonization, is normally long and complex. In 1997, Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin of Hartford, Conn., opened Fr. McGivney s cause for canonization. Dominican Fr. Gabriel B. O Donnell was named the postulator, or promoter, of the cause. Over the next three years, in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus and the archdiocese, Fr. O Donnell and others compiled the historical record of Fr. McGivney s life and works. Some 700 pages of documentation called the acts were presented to Archbishop Cronin in March He attested to their authenticity and entrusted them to Fr. O Donnell. That same month, Fr. O Donnell conveyed the acts to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints soon attested that the Church s norms had been successfully met in this initial diocesan phase of the process toward sainthood. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints appointed a relator, or advocate, to work with Fr. O Donnell in the writing of the positio, or extended argument, for Fr. McGivney s canonization. The positio is nearly 1,000 pages in two volumes, one Fr. McGivney s biography, the other an essay on his spirituality. The volume on spirituality is organized around his life of virtue. The biography is based on text prepared for the cause by Christopher Kauffman, professor of American Church history at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and author of two books on the history of the Knights of Columbus. The positio was presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in January On June 30, 2000, the diocesan phase of the investigation into a reported miraculous cure attributed to Fr. McGivney s intercession was completed. That report was also conveyed to the congregation, where it unrewent strict review. One miracle is required for beatification, at which time Fr. McGivney would be declared Blessed. Another miracle after that declaration is required for canonization or sainthood. The important work of guiding the reported miracle through the process of approval by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints belongs to the postulator of the cause. Often, such a process requires additional information on medical terms and procedures from the locale where the reported miracle occurred. The postulator should be present in Rome to be available to collaborate with the Congregation. In order to make this possible, the Knights of Columbus, the chief sponsor of the cause of Venerable Fr. Michael McGivney, appointed a new postulator, Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, to handle the cause. Fr. Gabriel B. O Donnell will become the vice-postulator in the United States. On the eve of Palm Sunday, March 15, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The papal declaration was a major step that significantly advances the process towards sainthood and gives Fr. Michael the distinction of being regarded as Venerable Servant of God. In December 2011, Brian Caulfield, a communications specialist in the executive office of the Supreme Knight, who holds a master degree in Theology was appointed as second Vice Postulator. His charge is to promote the Cause in the Philippines, where it is hoped that a miracle will come through the intercession of Fr. McGivney.
