3 So Be Imitators of God, As Beloved Children, and Live in Love The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to be imitators of God gives us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we should expect of ourselves and others. Don t we expect God to be patient, compassionate, loving, merciful, and wise? Don t we trust that God will provide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as beloved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as we build up the Kingdom of God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire us to live in love as sisters and brothers in God our Father. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. 4 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, August 4, 2018 As you have seen in the media, a Grand Jury report will be released recounting child sexual abuse by clergy and others in our diocese and in the dioceses of Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, and Scranton. Permit me the opportunity to prepare you for the public release of this report and also to put it into some context. I want you to know that our diocese has cooperated with the Attorney General's Office and the Grand Jury. We have not attempted to block the report. You can expect that the Grand Jury's report, once released, will be a sad and tragic description of events that occurred within the Church. With its release, I continue to be deeply concerned about the victims and the ongoing pain and suffering they endure. We need to continue to pray with and for them, and to offer assistance wherever possible. Since becoming your bishop 11 years ago, I have met many times with victims of sexual abuse and their families. I have witnessed the lasting damage that abuse has caused in their lives. I, together with the dedicated staff of our diocese, continue in our efforts to support their emotional and spiritual care to help repair the harm they suffered. The Grand Jury investigation covered the span of over seventy years. It is important to know that nearly 90 percent of all reported incidents of abuse in our own diocese occurred before For over 30 years, the Diocese of Pittsburgh has had policies in place to respond quickly and compassionately when victims of abuse have come forward. We respond to allegations today very differently than decades ago. When a credible allegation is made against a member of the clergy, we take immediate action by removing the priest or deacon from ministry, and by sharing that news with you, the faithful. In addition, we inform law enforcement of all allegations of abuse. We have rigorous policies to protect children. If you have been employed by the Church or have sought to volunteer in your parish or school, you have experienced our efforts to protect children through training programs and background checks. These steps have made a difference and continue to do so. More people in the Church are coming to better understand child abuse, and they are able to recognize the signs of possible abuse and the need to report it. In the Diocese of Pittsburgh today, I can assure you that there is no priest or deacon in public ministry against whom a substantiated allegation of child sexual abuse has been made. With the impending publication of the Grand Jury report, I now feel it is also necessary to publicly release the names of clergy from the Diocese of Pittsburgh against whom an allegation of the sexual abuse of a minor has been made. We will release this list when the Grand Jury report is published out of respect for the work of the Grand Jury and the process outlined by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. It is my hope that doing so will further strengthen the trust that you, the faithful, have placed in our diocese and in the ministry of our priests and deacons. In the past I truly believed that turning these names over to local law enforcement was appropriate and sufficient action. However, the conclusion of the Grand Jury investigation requires a higher level of transparency on our part. Every act of child sexual abuse is horrific, no matter how long ago it occurred. I ask that you join with me in praying for all victims and for their loved ones. If you know someone who is a victim, support them emotionally and spiritually. And if they have not already shared with us their experience of abuse, please encourage them to come forward. I am also concerned that your faith may be tested. I ask, as you reflect on this report, that you stay close to God in prayer. And finally, I am concerned about the well-being of the vast majority of dedicated priests and deacons who bear the shame and the pain of the worst deeds of their peers. I ask that you pray for them, as well. Thank you for receiving my message as it is shared with you from my heart. The tragedy of child sexual abuse affects us all. As difficult as this moment is, my prayer is that the agony of Jesus on the cross will be our beacon of hope. May we as a Church always seek to be who we are called to be the Body of Christ. Grateful for our belief that "Nothing Is Impossible with God," I am Your Brother in Christ, DAZ:jkb 4 Most Reverend David A. Zubik Bishop of Pittsburgh

5 SEAS EVANGELIZES HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS My soul proclaims the greatness of the lord..." What does YOUR soul proclaim? How can we, indeed, proclaim God's glory to our friends, family members, and colleagues, as well as to others who need to hear it, when our current culture presents so many challenges? Additionally, during times of change, how can we live and respond to life from our faith, and resist the tendency to go towards fearfulness, anger, and even a temporary forgetfulness that our God is always 'for' us? Our dear Mother Mary stands out as a huge beacon of hope in the midst of times of consternation and mystery, as she constantly and consistently points us to her Son, Christ, the one who really IS our Savior. Remember, she went through her own questioning: "she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be..." and, "...Mary said to the angel, "How can this be...?" Mary teaches us that seeking understanding while trusting in God and His plan (which is always immensely beyond our ability to comprehend) results in blessing. Mary teaches us that always saying Yes to God is automatically saying No to evil. And Mary teaches us that gratitude to God and His sovereignty in the face of mystery and pain is the response to move toward, as she did in her Magnificat, her verbal response to an unplanned pregnancy, the significance of which she had yet to fully understand. (See Luke 1: ) Gratitude is a remedy to help us through a period of adjustment. An attitude of gratitude helps us to trust that God is always in control, even when evidence seems to negate that fact. Let us thank Him in advance, knowing that He has a plan far bigger and better than we can even begin to imagine, and then trust Him to 'work all things out for good for those who love Him'. (See Romans 8:28) "...my spirit rejoices in God my savior." BEING A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN Catholics are Christians who believe that Jesus Christ reveals who God is and shows us how to live our faith to the fullest through a Catholic way of life. Catholics celebrate that Good News of God s love and mercy particularly in what they believe, worship, live, and pray. Now if God is inviting you to seek a deeper relationship with Him, or if God has placed a curiosity in you to ask what Catholics believe, then the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for you. It is the process through which the Catholic Church shares its faith with those who desire to enter this way of discovery. The parish community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton offers ongoing sessions on Tuesday evenings, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Maximilian Kolbe Room. Call the RCIA office ( x225 or rcia@seascarnegie.org) for more information. Is God reaching out and inviting you now? In 1960, groups of Columbian Squires in Mexico, Canada, and the United States decided to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe by carrying a rose across North America from Canada to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson addressed the effort in culture of life terms, referring to the Our Lady of Guadalupe - One Life, One Rose Program. He urged that it be expanded to every North American jurisdiction. In recent years the program has expanded to eight silver roses traveling the western, central, and eastern corridors of North America, with Knights of Columbus from Canada to Mexico carrying the roses from destination to destination, and finally to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. Every stop along the route of the Silver Rose Pilgrimage is an occasion for prayer and spiritual renewal centered on the rosary. The Knights of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council are happy to announce that we have been given the opportunity to participate in the pilgrimage. We will conduct a Prayer Hour and presentation of the Silver Rose on Thursday, August 16 th at 6:30 p.m. We invite all members of the parish to attend this very special event. THANK YOU! The Ladies of Charity from St Elizabeth Ann Seton would like to thank all who participated in our meet and greet evening. It was wonderful to see so many ladies from each parish sharing information about their ministries. A special thank you to the speakers from St. Margaret s of Scotland and Ss. Simon and Jude. We came away with a feeling of unity and strength in numbers. Hopefully, we will be able to enjoy another evening of sisterhood. 6
