3 TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION IS FOR THE RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS. SEE PAGE 12 THE EUCHARIST GIVE THANKS This coming week many of us will be busied about preparing a Thanksgiving meal and gathering with family and loved ones to share the gratitude of our hearts for the many blessings we have received. While Thanksgiving Day is celebrated as a national holiday by people of varied backgrounds, as people of faith, our hearts and minds are raised in prayer this day to the God who loves us and who provides every good gift and grace for our lives. Yet, our giving thanks to God for his blessings cannot be limited to just one day. Instead, thanksgiving must be woven into our daily lives. The word Eucharist means to give thanks. As we gather to celebrate God s love for us in the gift of His Son s Body and Blood, we give thanks from the depths of our hearts for the ways he is constantly at work to nourish, strengthen, enliven and inspire us. As Catholics, we enjoy the celebrations of Thanksgiving Day and we are called to work hard each day to form thankful hearts. And may our gratitude to God be expressed in words and deeds that strengthen our communities as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! 4 SEAS EVANGELIZES FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. (Ephesians 5:18b-20) Fr. Alek, Fr. Robin, Fr. Jerome and I wish you a Thanksgiving Day filled with blessings and the joy of recognizing them and their Source! Be attentive to daily blessings! With regret I announce that Melissa Fawcett, secretary in the SS Simon & Jude administrative center, has taken another position outside of the parish. Melissa, although here for a short time, made a great impact through her organizational skills and kindness with those who called or came to the office door. I am happy at the same time to announce that Emily Pino, presently part-time secretary at St. Margaret office, will become a full-time employee with her work taking place in both the St. Margaret and SS. Simon & Jude offices. As we plan within the next three years to form a common Pastoral Center, Emily will help to begin the process. Beginning November 26, St. Margaret office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at the usual hours. This will allow those who attend the daily masses to have access to the office. Messages can always be left at Emily s phone at St. Margaret on the off days. She will be sure to return your calls. Again, I thank you for your patience as we are reshaped in the coming years. Happy patronal feast to the folks at St. Margaret of Scotland! Fr. Grecco Queen Margaret of Scotland was by birth an English Princess, but through a variety of circumstances was raised in Hungary. In 1054, Margaret and her family returned from Hungary to England. Despite her royal position, Margaret lived a relatively simple and often difficult life. Although her husband could neither read or write, Margaret had a strong Benedictine education and knew Latin as well as English. She educated her own children. Her personal care for the poor and needy was exemplary. Wife, mother of eight children, educated woman, important player in Scottish and British history, Margaret was, above all, a holy woman. HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices We American Catholics are so blessed, and the coming week is just one proof of this fact. It s Thanksgiving week, which, for many, means the one, practically guaranteed, four-day weekend we can hope for each year. And, the Thanksgiving holiday itself is such a super blessing for us because we know Who to thank, (Who the Source is of the many blessings for which we are grateful), and we know how to thank, (even our term Eucharist comes from the Greek word for thanksgiving). The Thanksgiving holiday is also a time when it s easy to be vocal, and at the same time, feel natural, about thanking God aloud and publicly. Our reasons for thanks are especially on our minds during this time period, and are also a part of the Thanksgiving dinner ritual for many of us. But even better than all of that, our Thanksgiving week/weekend is followed immediately by a prompt liturgical exclamation point! The Solemnity of Christ the King, also known as the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. So, as if we didn t already have tons of things to be grateful for as we go around the Thanksgiving dinner table, Mother Church follows up with the huge reminder of what it s really all about: professing with our whole lives that Jesus is Lord, recognizing his reign in public life, as well as private life. Ideally, we use our hearts and hands and voices to proclaim this beautiful Truth our hearts to love God and neighbor as Christ commands us, our hands to do activities and good works in order to put our love His love - into action, and our voices to share with others about the vital importance that our faith holds in our lives. Come, thou Almighty King, help us thy name to sing, help us to praise. Father all glorious, O er all victorious, Come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days! 4
