1 T r i n i t y E c u m e n i c a l P a r i s h a t S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a k e Ecumeni News An ecumenical parish of Episcopalians, Lutherans, and Presbyterians Volume 39, Issue 87, March 2016 News from Pastor Philip Bouknight Director of Ministry to Children, Youth and Families - The Personnel Team charged a working subgroup with the task of interviewing candidates for a new position in our parish: The Director of Ministry to Children, Youth and Families. The position was advertised in our three local denominational publications, a dozen colleges and universities and two online job posting sites. Eight candidates applied for the position; three male and five female. Candidates represented the following traditions; Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist and Non- Denominational and came from the following states; AZ, CA, FL, PA, TX and VA. Levels of education were as follows; four bachelor s degrees, two master s degrees, one doctoral degree and one with a seminary degree specific to Christian Education. Out of the eight candidates, three warranted further inquiry. After further discernment, a primary candidate was selected, vetted by the Personnel Team and then approved by Parish Council. At the end of this process we chose a highly gifted, energetic, and committed woman of faith; our own Sharon Sicher. We give thanks that the Holy Spirit led her to apply for the position and we look forward to watching Sharon lead these ministries with the same energy and passion she has poured into our fantastic youth ministry. Second Floor Completed: Thanks to your generosity our new second floor has been completed. The youth are busy making this new space their own! We will dedicate the second floor on Wednesday night March 9 th immediately after our Lenten worship service. We give special thanks to Mark White for overseeing this project on behalf of the Building and Grounds Team. We give thanks to the Mules who have worked diligently throughout the renovation process and to Bill Taylor for managing the ordering of furnishings. Pastoral Care Team - I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Tami Akin and Margaret Oosterman for their faithful attention to matters of pastoral care. During this time of transition, we simply could not manage the acute needs of our members without them. Please take the opportunity to thank them for their service. Ministry Fair - There are so many opportunities to deepen your faith through ministry connections at Trinity. These connections help unite your gifts with meaningful areas of service. They unite your desire to connect with others with their desire to know you. There are over sixty unique opportunities for members at Trinity to participate in prayer, study and service. Please drop by the ministry fair on Sunday March 13 th and explore some of the opportunities that are just waiting for you. New Member Sunday We have a large new member class that will join us on March 20 th. Please plan to be in attendance and sign up for the new member luncheon following the service. As you read over their biographical information make it a point to get to know these newest members. If they live in your neighborhood, invite them over. If you have a common connection, share that with them. Any person at Trinity whom you do not know is a person that has the opportunity to enrich your life. Introduce yourself to one another. This is our church home and there should be no strangers here! Holy Week - There will be a community prayer walk sponsored by Epworth United Methodist church on Wednesday March 23 rd at 1PM. The walk will begin at Kroger. We will celebrate Holy Communion in our Maundy Thursday service on March 24 th at 7PM. The Good Friday community service will be held at Resurrection Catholic church on March 25 th at noon. Easter Sunday Join us for worship on March 27 th at 8:00 or 10:30 for our celebration of Easter. Between the services there will be an Easter Event with food, fun, and crafts for all ages. What can be more exhilarating than worship, beautiful music, and fantastic fellowship. He is risen indeed! 2 Tami Akin, Parish Nurse Herniated Disc A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disk or ruptured disk (also called disc) is when you have a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make your spine (Mayo Clinic, 2014). The discs are located between your vertebrae (back bones), help to cushion and serve to minimize the impact of movement on the spinal column (Medicinet, 2015). A disc is like a jelly donut, with a softer center encased with a tougher exterior. A herniated disk occurs when some of the softer "jelly" pushes out through a crack in the tougher exterior (Mayo Clinic, 2014). The discs that protrude can irritate the spinal nerves, and cause pain, numbness, and tingling, or there may be no symptoms at all (Mayo Clinic, 2014). The cause for herniation is the gradual wear and tear on your body, as a result of aging, or an injury (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Sometimes, using your back muscles instead of your leg and thigh muscles to lift large, heavy objects can lead to a herniated disk, as can twisting and turning while lifting (Mayo Clinic, 2014). The most common location for disc herniation is in the lumber region of your back or lower back in L4 and L5, because that is where the major impact of weight is felt from the upper body (Medicinet, 2015). Even though most herniated discs occur in the lower back, you can also have a herniated disc in the cervical (neck) area. The location of the herniated disc affects where pain will be felt. If a cervical disc involved, pain will be felt in the shoulders or arms. If it is located in L4-L5 it can cause a shooting pain down the buttock into the back of the thigh and down the leg. Sometimes this is associated with numbness and tingling in the leg. The pain often is worsened upon standing and decreases with lying down (Medicinet, 2015). If the herniated disc is very large it can cause severe pain down one or both legs, and might cause weakness, which can affect the ability to walk. Also, as the nerve weakens it may affect the ability to lift, or hold items (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Some individuals may have pain down into their foot. Pain can increase if you cough, sneeze, or move in certain positions (Mayo Clinic, 2014). It can also affect an individual s bowel and bladder function. Diagnostic test includes: a history and physical, testing your sensations, reflexes, and observation of your walk. An x-ray of your back may be ordered, along with a CT scan of your spine/mri, and a myelogram (dye is injected into your spinal column, and x-rays are taken), which helps to determine if you have herniated discs. An electromylogram may be ordered, which helps determine how the nerve signals are being transmitted, and if there is a problem. For mild to moderate pain: treatment consist of over the counter pain medication such as Non Steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, like Motrin, or Aleve. If that does not work, narcotics like Percocet/ OxyContin may be prescribed. Medications for nerve pain like Neurontin, Cymbalta, or Lyrica (Mayo Clinic, 2014) may be given. Muscle relaxants like Flexeril may Ecumeni News Page 2 also be an option. Cortisone injections may help to alleviate the pain for a while. Physical therapy with heat/ice treatments, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and traction can be alsoused to try and alleviate pain. If these measures fail, then surgery may be needed. Surgery: Microdisectomy: The surgeon uses a special microscope to view the area (disc and nerves). A tiny incision is made to remove the herniated/protruding disc material that is compressing the nerve. A small amount of bone may be removed to give better visualization of the area. (WebMD, 2014) Rarely, however, the entire disk must be removed. In these cases, the vertebrae may need to be fused together with metal hardware to provide spinal stability (Mayo Clinic, 2014). 4 Committees and Groups Trinity Preschool Tidbits What a chuckle to read our article in the EcumeniNews regarding the lack of snow! Between the submission of the article and its publication, we had over a foot of it! Between the cold temperatures and rainy days, there has been little activity on the playground. However, the hallway downstairs has become a virtual freeway, as the children zoom up and down on bikes, cars, motorcycles and scooters. All the classes held Valentine s parties, and used that day to talk about God s great love for us, the greatest love of all. Thank you to Dick Hill for the donation of art materials that had been Janet s. We are honored. Thank you also to the Garloughs for the subscription to National Geographic for little kids. Also thanks to every one of you who contribute to us through Kroger Rewards. (Our number is 82991!). We do hope that you come visit our hallway sometime. You can see our rooms as well as the wonderful decorations that Joanne Fritz puts up for us. Trinity Preschool is truly blessed. Bonita DeLooper Adult Education A new class will begin in late March to read and discuss Marcus Borg's and John Crossan's book, The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus' Last Days in Jerusalem. Using the Gospel of Mark as their reference base, these noted Jesus scholars tell the happenings day-by-day from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday from a justice-seeking perspective. Check the Christian Education bulletin board for specifics on start date and location. Hunger/Poverty Action A big Thank You goes to everyone who participated in this year s Souper Bowl of Caring. You donated $2,605 and roughly 350 lbs. of food items. The funds will be distributed between LCM and Helping Hands in Rocky Mount, whereas the food will be divided among LCM, God s Provisions and Heavenly Manna. Judy Mauney is seeking volunteers to help serve lunch at the Roanoke Rescue Mission one Friday per month from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If interested, please call Judy at Several H/PAC members recently met with the principal of Moneta Elementary School and the Bedford County s Title I Coordinator as a first step in finding out about hunger and poverty issues at the school. Two major identified needs are volunteer mentors and socks and underwear for students. H/PAC members will soon meet with the principal of Dudley Elementary School regarding this same question. H/PAC members are currently reading and discussing Robert D. Lupton s new book Charity Detox: What Charity Would Look Like If We Cared About Results. Drawing on his many decades of experience, Lupton outlines how to structure programs that actually improve the quality of life of the poor and the disenfranchised. -George Berndt Living Nativity The topic of our parish presenting a Living Nativity at Trinity has been discussed off-and-on in various circles for some time. Perhaps it s time to bring the discussion to a more formal setting and explore possible options might be a good year to have a special activity around Ecumeni News Page 4 Christmas. It could easily become a tradition started during the 50th anniversary year of Smith Mountain Lake. If you would like to explore the idea of a Living Nativity at TEP we will meet Tuesday, March 8th at 3 pm at the church. Helping Hands of Franklin County is a small agency in Rocky Mount that provides the County's most needy and vulnerable folks with emergency financial assistance. These folks sometimes find themselves with a termination notice on their electric bill, or unable to pay overdue rent or heating fuel and sometimes, they become homeless. They are in a crisis. Trinity has been a financial supporter of Helping Hands for many years but now they are in need of volunteers. The agency is in need of persons who will interview clients and guide them through their crisis with financial assistance. Helping Hands is open Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 1. Volunteers have the choice of how many or how few hours they wish to contribute. The Director, Dr. Sam Campbell, is a joy to work with. 5 Committees and Groups Acolyte News On this snowy February afternoon I write this article for the March newsletter. At this time I have filled the March acolytes with the exception of easter Sunday at 8am, where one more acolyte is needed, and Sunday, March 13 at 10:30am. Hopefully, I will be able to secure the two before the Sunday they are needed. I am sorry to say that Lee Holcomb will no longer be assisting me in training our new acolytes. We thank her for her dedicated service to the Lord and His church in Moneta. Lee and Rich will be moving to South Carolina to be close to her daughter, Allison and husband, and three grandchildren. The good news is that Debbie Cressell will now be assisting me in the same capacity and that will begin as soon as she learns the ropes of training. Her daughter, Maddy, will help us as emonstrator for the new acolytes as they are trained. Thanks, Debbie, for taking on this personally rewarding responsibility. We will be training two new acolytes soon, both for the 10:30 service. If you have a child 7 years old through high school who would like to acolyte, please call me at and I will include him/her in our session. Love, Dot DeVed World Day of Prayer 2016 Plan to participate in this year's World Day of Prayer is Friday, March 4th. Bethlehem UMC is the hosting church and the focus country is Cuba. The service will begin at 11 a.m. with refreshments to follow. This is a community service, so share this with others and bring a friend. Come rejoice in our worship of God Almighty! Trinity Treasures Since the groundhog is predicting an early Spring, it s and opportunity to clean out unused or no longer wanted treasures for our annual sale. Our shed in the lower level parking lot is available for drop off seven days a week/24 hours a day. For larger items, please call Stan Sowers at Trinity Treasures is seeking a chairperson or co-chairs to head up the annual sale beginning November Dan and Nan Jones have provided excellent leadership for the past three years and are ready to step down. We have and ablebodied group of people whoa re willing to assist the new leadership. A regular group works weekly to sort, repair, and assemble items for the sale. Anyone accepting the position will have a great deal of support and willing workers. If you are considering this position, you are welcome to visit the team any Tuesday morning and we can answer questions and/or discuss responsibilities. Trinity Ecumenical Parish celebrates 25 years of Living, Loving, Serving, and Growing on June 26th, Ecumeni News Page 5 Council s Corner The January 16th Parish Council Meeting followed the Council Retreat held on same day to introduce new members to the group and its mission. For your information, here are the highlights from that council meeting: - Based on approved financial decisions from the December council meeting, excess 2015 funds were approved to move into the Capital Repair & Improvement Fund as a parish maintenance reserve account. - Approved motion to switch the church building s water supply from well to public hook up with Western Virginia Water; total initial cost is $20K. This action will: a. Improve quality of TEP drinking water b. Negate the cost to fill a mandatory water maintenance personnel position and c. Eliminate additional water inspection/test costs. - Established council liaisons to TEP ministry teams and committees. - Approved motion for 2016 pastor housing allowance, IAW with IRS guidance. - Provided status on activities for selecting a new assistant pastor; three candidates in personal interview stage. - Provided status on activities for selecting a new Director of Ministry for Children, Youth and Families; target selection is March. 6 Committees and Groups Hunger Action and Stewards of the Earth Join Forces to Support Parish Gleaning Efforts One of the more thoughtprovoking presentations at our Wednesday Night Supper series last year was given by the director of the Society of St. Andrew, Mike Waldman. His visit was sponsored by our Hunger Action Committee. The organization he represents coordinates the nation s largest gleaning effort, with a headquarters in unassuming Big Island, VA, a few miles outside Lynchburg. Mike s explanation of how much food is wasted in our nation every year, while many go hungry, was a real eye-opener. Gleaning, according to SOSA, is the traditional biblical practice of gathering crops that would otherwise be left in the fields to rot, or be plowed under after harvest. Not long after that first presentation, Sarah Ramey, who directs SOSA s gleaning efforts in Virginia, visited TEP to meet with parishioners interested in beginning a local gleaning effort to support Lake Christian Ministries. At Sarah s suggestion, we determined to partner with Beckners Produce in Burnt Chimney for the 2015 season. With weekly pickups from Beckners leading the way, our gleaners gathered 17,971 lbs. by the end of the year. While produce varied from week to week, it included fresh tomatoes, peppers, green beans, squash, okra, cucumbers, eggplant, melons, lettuce, greens, and cantaloupe. In addition, we also received sweet potatoes from the Giving Garden and picked peaches locally. We also made two excursions to glean corn in Gretna, one visit to glean apples at Gross Orchard in Bedford, and a longer haul to Riner in Montgomery Co. to glean turnips. The camaraderie shared by our participants made the effort all the more enjoyable. At one point or another, at least three dozen parishioners participated in helping make our efforts a success. And as it wasn t long before some of our deliveries more than filled LCM s coffers, our other local food pantry, the Agape Center, was more than happy to share our bounty. As we head into to our 2016 season, our Stewards of the Earth, who helped spearhead our effort thus far, have formally partnered with the Hunger Action Committee to lead the project. We plan to continue to work with Beckners, while we supplement our regular weekly pickups from the produce stand with more expeditions to the field. We are most eager to expand our volunteer list so that we don t have to turn down opportunities for lack of hands. As most of our work takes place in the summer when many of our parishioners are out of town, we need to be able to draw on a large list of volunteers. Thanks to Dan Jones and Roger Fritz, who traveled to a potato drop in Blacksburg in early January and gleaned 2000 lbs. for our local charities, 2016 is already off to a great start. Geoff Orth Lost Trinity History Scrapbook It was an exciting time when our new church wad first completed and Pastor Gary Scheidt gave his fist sermon in the Sanctuary. But what a shock! you could not see his features. His face was totally dark from so much back light from the large windows in back of him. We soon knew that although we loved seeing the sky and clouds and birds flying by, we wanted more to see our preacher. We realized we needed beautiful, inspiring stained glass windows and soon. So a committee was formed to seek out a stained glass studio to design, construct and install windows. I was fortunate to be invited to be on the committee and what a fascinating project it would be. It took many consults with various studios, suggestions from members and friends, explorations, feedbacks, questionnaires to the congregation and final votes before we decided on Mark Gulsrud, from Tacoma, Wash. What a great find! It was such an interesting process that right from the start I kept a scrapbook style notebook with photos and documents and written notes a complete history of that years search. And I let people that were really interested borrow it over the years, always to be retuned. EXCEPT the last time! Who did I lend it to? When? Where is it now? With the 25th Anniversary coming up this year, I would like to share it with our newer members and have it to refresh memories. Could it possibly be YOU have it hidden away somewhere, long forgotten about? Lets hope someone recalls where it is. 7 Soon to be on Facebook! Online Adult Education begins at Trinity Yes: It is true! It is about to begin! The Christian Education Ministry of the Trinity Ecumenical Parish will offer online education via Facebook Groups. The concept of online educational offerings from Trinity was initiated in 2013 by David Fox and made technically possible by Konrad Crist and Mary Buchanan. The team plans to begin the first group in March The only requirement to participate is a Facebook account. This format allows members to view video presentations and interact with other members through comments, instant chats, and online group discussions. There is no specific pace for the first course, Living Systems Theory. Once the course begins online, feel free to explore content at your own leisure on your personal computers, tablets, smart phones, or any device you use to logon to Facebook. More about Living Systems Theory The first online offering is from our very own Reverend Theodore N Brossoie, entitled, Living Systems Theory. There are 10 Sessions of teaching, each lasting between 27 and 35 minutes. The topic provides a fresh perceptive paradigm to look at the question, What is Life? The Topic is not for entertainment; but it is a teaching of a fresh scientific concept to look into reality. The fresh concept is an insight derived by Biological and Physics scientists, which has evolved over the last halfcentury. The concept is simply described as a new paradigm on the meaning of life as a system to be thoroughly examined by each living human. The Ten Sessions refer to the current Biology and Physics research concerning a scientific development, called Systems Theory. Systems Theory is a new methodology for scientific research on anything. For centuries, providing a description of a thing was the common methodology of research; but in Systems Theory the methodology is to identify the patterns of relationships with the environment of other things. Consequently, such a paradigm has led Biologists to seek patterns of relationship with all other living lifeforms. Hence, scientists call this activity, Living Systems Theory. Ecumeni News Page 7 Living Systems Theory is based on their scientific work to identify the patterns of relationships between the Living Creator and the human life forms. The Christian Faith has so many concepts which are used regularly to define or describe our faith. But our Faith becomes exciting when we endeavor to identify the patterns of relationships with our Living Creator and other human life-forms. Living Systems Theory is indeed a new way of perceiving the relationships, roles, meanings and directions of our human lives with a Living Creator God. Having been a Research Engineer for the former General Electric Co. Research Laboratory, I have been reviewing for the past two decades how this new paradigm affects the Christian Faith and its Outlook. This PowerPoint Presentation is the result of my search for better understanding how my Christian Faith is enriched when I review it through the lenses of Living Systems Theory. I am now in remission and off the Prednisone and feeling stronger each day. I will continue to take a low level of another auto-immune suppressant (Tacrolimus) until September which the Doctor at Johns Hopkins believes will keep the disease from returning. I want to thank all of you for your precious prayers, cards, calls, visits and treats. All of your kindness and thoughtfulness were so appreciated when I was too weak to leave the house and needed to avoid contact with any viruses while I had a depressed immune system. Knowing you were thinking of me all that time lifted my spirits each day. Now that I am able to attend church services and get out to other events, I so appreciate your warm greetings and hugs and i am so thankful to God for such loving friends. I especially want to thank my Stephen Minister who is an Angel on earth and whose visits, prayers and cards have all been such a blessing to me. She gave me a Jesus Calling book with daily letters of love from Jesus that have helped me to grow in increased Faith and Peace as I try to accept my illness and trust in God s Will for me. It is also helping me to learn to be more patient and forgiving of others and myself, but I have a long way to go to follow our Teacher.
