The home is beautiful, spacious, and will serve as a wonderful image of hospitality for the pastor s family and a place of pride for the congregation. To celebrate this great accomplishment, a service of dedication followed by an all-community open house is scheduled for January 13, from 2:00 6:00 p.m. Invitations are going out to church dignitaries, neighbors in the Tuscan Woods Development, and, of course, all Epworth friends. The dedication service will be at 2:15 p.m. followed by tours, fellowship, and lots of good food and beverage. This event will also highlight and extend the challenge for generosity from among Epworth friends to help pay down the $120,000 mortgage that was required to make this significant improvement in parsonage housing for our pastoral leadership. Leadership gifts of over $40,000 were received before the church took possession of the home. For those who are able to make a strong commitment, the planning team has arranged for trees to be planted this coming spring in memorium or in honor of loved ones as an expression of appreciation for donations. Gifts or commitments can be marked parsonage fund. Also indicate the memorial or dedication to be placed with the parsonage garden and landscaping associated with your gift. 2 SONbeam Page 2 A Word from our Pastor... Living In The Light Of Day The theme of coming out of the darkness carried us into Christmas and now into the season of Epiphany. No doubt some of the language and timing of the Christ-child s birth comes from the bleak midwinter, the shortness of the days for the northern hemisphere of the earth, and the human need for the signs and wonders of God s presence among us. Now the daylight is lasting longer and January welcomes the shining forth of God in Christ through the epiphanies of the scriptures and the epiphanies among us as we are receptive to God s real presence. Now we celebrate the light, the shining of God in our lives, the ability to see good in things where we only saw darkness before. We are now living in the light of day. These coming weeks are filled with opportunities for celebration, renewal, and reframing of our lives, our minds, our hearts, and our spirits. This does not suggest that we are suddenly immune from pain, sorrow, loss, and other experiences that remind us of our creatureliness, but we have a new light shed on these and other experiences. Nothing... absolutely nothing can stand between us and the light of Christ. We are redeemed. We are set free. We can go about our business with greater clarity that love triumphs whenever we give it a chance. Wonderful worship experiences are upcoming to help us see and experience our faith in the light of day. January 13: - Remembering the baptism of our Lord and sharing a festive day of infant baptisms, renewal of baptism, and a grand reunion of households who have presented an infant or child for baptism over the last five years. - Orientation for this year s class of confirmation students - Dedication and open house for the new parsonage at 2024 Torino Dr. January 20: - Re-gathering of all confirmation graduates who are under 30 years of age. - The actual beginning of the 2008 confirmation class during the Sunday School hour. February 10: - Scout Sunday with strong celebration of the ministry of scouting for boys and girls, young men and young women in our community. The theme will clearly be Everything Scouting for that Sunday s activities. God is so very, very good and what a privilege for the people of our community to encourage and serve one another in the loving spirit of Christ. May this be a blessed and joyful new year for you and all your loved ones! 5 SONbeam Page 5 Special Happenings In Worship Seeking Baptism Candidates: January 13th Sunday, January 13th is the day we remember the baptism of our Lord. The day will be focused on the sacrament of baptism and why we hold this as one of two central sacraments in the life of our faith community. Several opportunities will be present: * The pastor is welcoming new candidates from the community to receive baptism. Parents of infants and toddlers who have never received the sacrament of baptism are especially encouraged to participate in a brief information session and share in the service of baptism at either worship service on January 13th. Families which are not yet members of the Epworth Church are very much welcome to have household members baptized. *Children who have been baptized in the last five years are encouraged to be presented for a reunion and household recognition. This will be our focus for the young Christian s time and a way to rediscover the manner in which parents, sponsors or god parents, and the congregation live out the baptismal covenant together. *Our cradle roll will be officially reconstituted to honor all baptized children age 3 and under. This will restart a historic tradition in the Epworth Church of responding to new babies in our community and providing support and encouragement for these little ones and their parents during the most critical formation period in human life. Confirmation Celebration: January 20th As a part of the beginning of the confirmation class for 2008, a congregational recognition will be held for all new confirmands on Sunday, January 20th at both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. services. To help welcome the new confirmands to their journey, Epworth is inviting all persons who are under 30 years of age who were confirmed in this congregation over the last 16 years to come together and be recognized in celebration. We will continue the baptism celebrations of January 13 by focusing on the manner in which confirmation is the process by which we all accept for ourselves the promise and gift of God s saving grace and love. Invite all who qualify for the proposed recognition and plan to join in the celebration and the renewal of all of our baptisms and membership vows. New Member Sunday: January 27th All persons seeking to unite with the Epworth United Methodist Church are welcome to be in contact with Pastor Newhouse toward a service of reception at either worship hour on Sunday, January 27th. Uniting with a congregation is in itself a public confession of faith and a further commitment to exercise one s faith commitments by serving, caring for, and supporting one another in the faith community. Full professing members are those who locate their Christian citizenship with Epworth United Methodist Church. There are other options to share that Christian citizenship. For those who have strong reasons for maintaining a relationship with another congregation of The United Methodist Church, there is Affiliate Membership status available. For those who have such a relationship with a congregation of another denomination, Associate Membership status is possible. Confirmation 2008 About To Begin The 2008 confirmation class will begin their journey with orientation on January 13th. Sessions will be held each Sunday during the Sunday School hour between worship services. An alternating pattern will be followed that has a teaching/learning session with Mary and Don Becker around the study of the Gospel of Luke on one Sunday and an exploration and dialogue session with mentors on the alternate Sundays. Confirmation will include a retreat day after Easter and encouragement for confirmands to participate in outreach service ministries, go on a field trip to see ministries in action and experience non-christian faith communities, experience a wedding ceremony and possibly attend a service of death and resurrection. Interested candidates or parents/guardians of candidates should contact the church office, Pastor Newhouse or Mary Becker as soon as possible. Mentors will be selected and matched in advance of the January 13 orientation. Confirmation Sunday is currently scheduled for April 27, 2008.

6 SONbeam Page 6 January Worship Schedule: * represents the scripture focus for the Sunday January 6th: Epiphany of our Lord Sunday Scriptures: Isaiah 60:1-6 & *Ephesians 3:1-12 The early church already had issues that the church has faced ever since. One of those is how to be people who accept different ethnic heritages, cultural patterns and lifestyles, and understandings of the Christian faith and emphasize what holds us in common with each other more than what sets us apart from each other. Christ brought a solution and a re-solution that is appropriate for all our lives in this new year. January 13th: 1 st Sunday after the Epiphany, Baptism of the Lord Scriptures: *Isaiah 42:1-9 & Matthew 3:13-17 Reunion of children baptized in the last 5 years. Celebration of baptism for new candidates. Renewal of baptism for all Christians. Dedication of the Cradle Roll of infants and toddlers under 3 years of age. Isaiah anticipates the revelation that would come in Jesus the Messiah and the words, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. To be baptized in Christ is to accept this blessing from God to grow into servant leaders. This growth is through the faith village that raises every child and young person into adulthood and maturity. January 20th: 2 nd Sunday after the Epiphany, Human Relations Day (special offering)- Scriptures: *Psalm 40:1-11 & John 1:29-42 Reunion of all under the age of 30 who were confirmed in faith at Epworth UMC. Celebration of the start of Confirmation The Psalmist helps the people of God to consider the powerful new song, or new soundtrack that God offers for how to understand life. It is a soundtrack that does not accept the victory of darkness over light but just the reverse. In our case, we discover we march to the beat of a gracious, loving, caring, and personable drummer. With this soundtrack we gain encouragement, hope, possibility, and assurance of everlasting care. January 27th: 3 rd Sunday after the Epiphany Scriptures: Isaiah 9:1-4 & *Matthew 4:12-23 Membership and Reaffirmation of Faith Sunday Jesus has put the word out, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. Then he begins calling together those who will partner in ministry to make disciples. This models for us the call to discover active discipleship and our ability to respond to God s call to become fishers of human beings for the kingdom of heaven. Dates Coming Up In February Black History Month Tuesday, February 5th: Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday (last harrah before Lent and Ash Wednesday!) Watch for more details on activities. Wednesday, February 6th: Ash Wednesday 7:00 p.m. service of confession, renewal and receiving the sign of the ash Sunday, February 10th: Scouting Sunday calling together all scout leaders, participants, and supporters in Christian celebration. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be honored. A word from member, Robert (Bob) McGraw... We received a letter from Bob McGraw saying that he is moving to an assisted living facility in East Dundee. His new address is: 605 Barrington Avenue, #114 East Dundee, IL Due to this move, Bob will be attending Zion Church in Carpentersville with his daughter, as he no longer has transportation. Although his regular presence is missed at Epworth, we are sure that he would love to hear from each of you as he adjusts to his new digs.

7 SONbeam Page 7 Beyond Our Walls CROP Walk Update Back in mid-october, some Epworth members and friends participated in the annual CROP Walk for Hunger. 8 SONbeam Page 8 Stewardship Campaign Yields Amazing Results The 2007 stewardship campaign was punctuated by an invitation for all members and friends of the Epworth Congregation to make specific commitments to active prayer, regular presence, generous gifts, and engaged service as marks of the spiritual gifts of God placed in our lives. Some amazing results must be celebrated: As of this writing 117 commitment forms were submitted representing 165 people in the Epworth Community! More will come in but this is a very significant witness! 64 respondents are ready to pray in ALL the areas listed on the commitment form, including praying for the church, for those in need, for those seeking Christ in their lives, for children, youth and adults to mature in the Christian faith, for mission work, for leadership in our worship and services, and for continuing clarification of Christian vocation (God s calling on their lives!) Many others made commitment to specific areas of prayer. Prayer is bound to be a huge power in the life of Epworth as a result of these commitments. Ways to further support and explore prayer will likely be a part of our Lenten opportunities as your church responds to the outpouring of commitment to prayer. The commitment to presence at worship, spiritual growth opportunities, the living out of each Christian s baptism, participation in fellowship and social activities, being present for those in need, and contributing to the work of task groups, committees, and teams is also very strong. There appears to be increasing awareness that presence and participation in Christian life with other Christians is the best way to feel loved and to live out love for one another as Christ has loved us! The commitment to service came in all the areas: visiting in hospitals, care centers, the homebound, families with newborns, first time attenders; joining in on work projects locally, regionally or even abroad; offering to make phone calls or write notes or help with follow-up to keep in touch with all members and friends of the congregation. Epworth is definitely a serving church and there is indication that some are ready to test new territory in how they serve as Christians. Increased financial generosity was apparent in commitments of our gifts: 20 new participants in financial giving, 50 expressing their desire to go the extra mile, 63 supporting organizations, services and ministries outside of the local church, and some requesting information on developing their legacy gifts. The financial commitment has already topped $237,900 for the 2008 operating budget and at least 42 of those who committed financially for 2007 have not yet submitted their commitment for Will our commitments surpass the $325,000 mark in support of the 2008 budget when all is said and done? We celebrate this work of God in our midst! For further support, resources, or opportunities to live out these Christian commitments, do not hesitate to contact Pastor Newhouse or a member of the Stewardship Committee Financial Giving Statements Financial Giving Statements for the 2007 year will be mailed out the 4th week in January. If you need to know the status of your commitment/pledge, you can refer to your 3rd quarter statement or call Epworth s Financial Secretary, Carol Westphal at # The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Jess Borgenson, Adam Long, Daniel Singer Nothing Special Productions (which features Epworth member Brian Rohde) will present this wonderful and funny performance at Epworth on Thursday, January 10th and Friday, January 11th.
