KidZone, a nursery ministry that runs during the 10:00 am Mass, is now in its 9 th week of operation. It is a most rewarding time for those of us who serve in this ministry. We work with babies and toddlers, and they truly put a smile on our faces. It is wonderful to see our adult and teen helpers looking forward to playing and caring for the little ones. Please spread the word to your family, friends, and neighbors with young children who might take advantage of the opportunity to spend quality time at Mass knowing that their child is well cared for. We use the Pre K room in the Faith Development Center with access to all the necessary equipment and toys to entertain the children. You may bring your child to us anytime after 9:00 am. Since the ratio of care givers to children is presently high, each child gets undivided attention. We hope to see more families make use of this ministry; however, we do need more help adults as well as teens one or two Sundays a month. Perhaps those who don t have grandchildren nearby might benefit from the time spent with the little ones? I find that my time spent in Kid Zone helps me to focus on the children only, and I really enjoy them. It s a vacation of sorts from everyday cares. Please consider serving at KidZone and supporting parents as they guide their families in faith. It will put a smile on your face too! Call me at with any questions you may have. Jayne Cipriano KidZone Ministry Leader Thanks to Jayne and the KidZone team, we have also been able to offer childcare during the Sunday School Classes for adults that Fr. Nick is teaching. We are most grateful to this ministry for their dedication and we pray that more parishioners will feel called to this rewarding ministry.

6 Ordinary Life In early October, Fr. Nick, Annie Munroe, and I, attended the International Catholic Stewardship Council Conference (ICSC). The ICSC is a professional organization that provides education, networking, and information to advance Stewardship as a Way of Life in the Roman Catholic Church. The conference offered over 100 educational sessions over a 3 day span of the conference. Session topics varied and included: An Introduction to the Spirituality of Stewardship, Making the Most of Technology in the Parish, New Strategic Planning for Parishes, Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth, Stewardship of Time and Talent, Stewards of our Neighbors: Starting a Parish Recover Support Ministry for Families, Hospitality is Fundamental to Parish Stewardship, etc., etc. Conference days began early at 7:00am with the opportunity to visit the Chapel, participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and have breakfast before sessions begin at 8:30am. The rest of the day was filled with sessions, a lunch break with presentations/speakers, and more sessions in the afternoon. Days conclude with beautiful and moving Concelebrated Liturgies each afternoon at 5:15pm. The Masses are attended by approximately 1000 individuals. Bishops, Priests, Parish Staff, and Parishioners all joined in prayer, song ringing throughout the hotel conference center each afternoon. This is my favorite part of the day, chills run through my body every time. Each evening Fr. Nick, Annie and I would plan our next day, our plan of attack. Each of us attended a different session each time span, fitting as many as were possible into our 3 days there. By the end of the conference our brains were on information overload. I met priests from all over the USA, Canada and Nigeria. I met Parish Business Managers from PA, CO, and FL. I spoke with the most amazing woman from Iowa, representing her parish as a member of their Stewardship Committee. So much good information, so many good ideas, so grateful for the chance to meet with others so willing to share their parish journeys. This conference I discovered how far we have come as a parish. We have much to celebrate today. Our ministries are growing, so many are hearing the call to participate, to pray, learn, welcome, and invite. This is Stewardship. We are not called to an Ordinary Life, be not afraid, have courage, we have so much more to do! Are you living Stewardship as a Way of Life? Can you share how this makes a difference in your life? Would you like to learn more? Would you like to assist the parish moving forward with our stewardship effort? Would you like to represent your parish at an upcoming ICSC Conference? If the answer to any of these questions is Yes - please speak with me after Mass on Sunday mornings, or call me at the Parish Office Susan Simonson Business Operations Manager Are you living Stewardship as a way of life? Are you spiritually motivated and concerned about others relationship with God? Can you envision where stewardship can take individuals and this parish? Will you pray and consider being part of our Stewardship committee? Stewardship begins at home The concept of stewardship is something about which my understanding has been growing since before I came to work in the Parish. I grew up like many, a faithful Catholic, raised with a reasonable grasp of worship practices, the flow of the Church year, and celebrated my initiation sacrament milestones through my childhood. Beyond Mass on Sundays, and on high days and Holy days however, my involvement in my parish was minimal. It wasn t long after I made a conscious decision to be more deliberate in studying my faith, that I realized that stewardship is part of my baptismal call. I have been on a personal stewardship journey ever since. When I was offered the opportunity to attend this conference I jumped at it as I knew it would not only help push me along in that journey, but more importantly, given my role here in the parish, it would allow me to benefit from others experiences and successes in communicating and sharing about stewardship, and helping others on their own personal stewardship journeys. The theme of this year s conference was Stewardship of our Families at Home and in the Church. Each session I attended incorporated this theme, which as a wife and mother helped reinforce for me personally the role I have to play in being a good steward of my time, talents and resources at home, in my job and in how I serve in ministry. (continued on next page )

7 (continued ) This theme, and the different sessions treatment of it, also affirmed for me that the direction we have been taking as a parish, to identify the lost and ensure that we are as welcoming a parish as we can be, as accommodating to young adults and families as possible, and that we have programs to help teach those coming back to their faith, or those who simply wish to learn more, is the correct direction. As Susan said, each of us left the conference with minds bursting with information and ideas. We have spent some time since the conference distilling those ideas, prioritizing the steps that we in conjunction with other members of the Pastoral Team will take to further Stewardship as a Way of Life in the Parish. One of the phrases we heard at several talks was that Staff and Parishioners are Partners in the Mission. As we said last week, one of our priorities is the establishment of a Stewardship Committee. This will serve as a consultative, and action oriented committee and will help all of us become true Partners in the Mission. We are all at the end of the day, striving toward Heaven, let us be committed to helping each other get there! The Parish that was celebrated as the winner of the ICSCs Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Parish Stewardship Award is from our own diocese, St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Altamonte Springs. They define their stewardship journey as follows: Inspire a Culture of Encountering God and the Spiritual Life Embrace a Culture of Engagement Live a Culture of Gratitude and Evangelization Witness a Culture of Jesus! Stewardship is first and foremost about saying Yes! to God in our everyday lives. We have taken the first steps toward transforming our parish toward being a stewardship parish. This is an exciting time in our Parish, many great things are happening, and we look forward to working in partnership with you, to bring about many more exciting things that will ultimately help us make real Jesus mission for us to Love God, Love Others and Make Disciples! Annie Munroe Administrative Assistant to the Pastor The Two Feet of Love in Action Charitable works and social justice have been called the two feet of Catholic social teaching. Charitable works meets the immediate needs of persons and families. It treats the symptoms of social problems. Charitable works calls forth a generous response from individuals and responds to particular situations. Social justice changes social structures that attack human dignity, oppress people, and contribute to poverty. It focuses on the rights of people, addresses underlying social causes, and works for long term social change. Pope Benedict XVI expresses it in this way, the Church Cannot neglect the service of charity anymore than she can neglect the sacraments and the word. Charity must animate the entire lifes of the lay faithful and therefore also their political activity, lived as social charity United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Reprinted with permission. Put feet to your faith In keeping with Catholic teaching the parish is forming and Advocacy and Social Justice Committee and we invite parishioners to become part of this ministry. Please contact Mike Draggich at or see Debbie Andre after Mass, you may also call Debbie at the Parish Office ext. 412 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome November 8/9, 2014 In today s reading from Saint Paul s letter to the Christian community at Corinth, he suggests that we are all called to be wise master builders in the building up of God s temple, the local Church. Each one of us has been given gifts to offer this building enterprise, and we are called to be good stewards of this project, to build this church together, in communion with one another, according to God s plan, not ours. Jesus Christ is the solid foundation upon whom we are to build. Saint Paul further suggests that God will judge us according to the quality of our stewardship. Can we see ourselves as master builders of God s church? What gifts are we using to construct this holy place that God will call home?

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica "When he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe." Jesus predicted his resurrection in today's Gospel. But it wasn't until after the disciples witnessed the miraculous event that they realized what he had been talking about. At the time, Jesus' words seemed mysterious, even confusing. Those who heard him understandably thought his reference to "this temple" was about the Jewish house of worship. But it wasn't. He was talking about his body. This only became clear later. As the saying goes, "hindsight is twenty-twenty." How often do we find ourselves in the midst of a situation that doesn't make sense at the time? We question the "meaning" of a sickness, a lost job, a betrayal, or a disappointment. But then, after time has passed, we can begin to see it from another angle. In fact, many times we begin to see how good came out of these tough situations. St. Paul says, "We know that all things work for good for those who love God," (Rom 8:28). Sometimes it's hard to trust in God's promises, especially when his plan seems mysterious or confusing. But just as the disciples learned that Jesus knew what he was talking about, we can believe that too. He tells us that he is "the way and the truth and the life" (Jn 14:6). Although the way may seem indirect, Jesus' perspective is bigger than ours. He knows how to lead us to the fullness of life, in this world and the next. The path may not be one that we would choose. Even Jesus had to journey through the cross before his resurrection-the temple of his body was destroyed before it was rebuilt. But looking back, it's obvious that God's plans really do work out for the best Liturgical Publications Inc World Youth Day 2016 World Youth ay is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different county. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 23rd to 28th, The next one will be in Krakow, Poland from July 22nd to August ; home of St John Paul II and St Faustina Kowlaska. The pilgrimage is open to anyone years old and who has graduated high school in or before This event is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church; to share with the whole world the hope of many young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions. The Diocese of Orlando is organizing a pilgrimage by partnering with Dube Travel. More information can be found by contacting Richard Monteverde at You may also go to the Diocese of Orlando Website at for more information on the pilgrimage or for information about WYD: Krakow. 9 The elementary students at St. Anthony Catholic School are paired with middle school classes so they can interact and do different learning activities. On Wednesday afternoons, the Second Graders and Sixth Graders get together and buddy read. Both groups of students enjoy reading together and discussing what they read. They discuss the book by asking the questions that answer who, what, why, when, and where. As the year goes on, the students will be given projects to go along with the books they are reading. This is an excellent opportunity for the second graders to show their reading skills and for the sixth graders to show their leadership skills! During the school week, we also have volunteers from our Parish, who do not have kids at our school, but who share their time and talent with our school children. This is a wonderful way to connect the different generations we have in our parish and our children learn so much from them. If you would like to support the school by offering your time and skills, please get in touch. (All who serve our school must pass Diocese background screening and fingerprint checks.) This week we will have a visiting team at our school as part of our ongoing accreditation process. This is one of several review visits that Catholic Schools in our Diocese receive and we welcome them as an opportunity to ensure that we are always striving for excellence. We aim to deliver a high standard of academic success, and support the faith formation of our students. Have you thought about where your child will attend school next year? As an accredited school you can be confident that we have the ability to nurture every aspect of your child s education. If you haven t been thinking about where your child will attend school next year, now is a good time to start. If you would like a personal tour, and would like to meet with Mrs. Peddecord, School principal and some of our staff, please contact the School Office and we jpeddecord@saintacs.com will be happy to arrange that with you. We have a place for your child at St. Anthony Catholic School and we look forward to welcoming jpeddecord@saintacs.com you. saintacs.com

11 Mon., Nov. 10: Titus 1:1-9; Luke 17:1-6 Leo the Great, pope and doctor of the church Increase our faith. Jesus just keeps moving, practically running to Jerusalem to accomplish what he calls his baptism. No time to waste now, no time for subtlety fine distinctions. Ask yourself: Have I caused another person to sin? Am I ready to rebuke someone if she sins? Am I ready to forgive him if he repents? It s hard not to blame someone else, especially a brother, a sister, when they always seem to fail us. But forgive seven times a day? Empty my cup of compassion until nothing s left? Even Jesus in Gethsemane is stunned at the prospect. For once, the apostles, usually so obtuse, seem to sense what s at stake: Increase our faith! Faith, when a mustard seed outweighs a millstone. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Tues., Nov. 11: Titus 2:1-8, 11-14; Luke 17:7-10 Martin of Tours, bishop Put on your apron. At Mass, any meal in the Gospels sounds like the Eucharist. But this one? Wait on me while I eat and drink, you may eat and drink later. How often have I come home exhausted, only to find an ungrateful welcome and chores to do? A pretty church poster said: Jesus invites you to a dinner given in his honor. But the breaking of the bread was never a fashionable affair. Jesus is rushing to Jerusalem, his apron on, to become himself the ultimate servant. So we rest in this: Our service is a vocation, and, as Mother Teresa said, Our vocation is to belong to Jesus. Take, Lord, receive, all I have and possess; give me only your love and your grace, that s enough for me. Wed., Nov 12: Titus 3:1-7; Luke 17:11-19 Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem. Jerusalem is so close now he can almost see it (though when he does see it, he bursts into tears). On the way he meets ten lepers; they live among the lost, but they know enough to look for Jesus. In a prophetic move, he sends them to the priests. All but one a despised Samaritan! get lost again. Where are the other nine? The leper s loud thanks glorify God, not only Jesus, who will soon glorify God as an outcast himself in His Passion. This Gospel lands near Thanksgiving Day every year, our secular Eucharist. The very word Eucharist means thanksgiving. So let s all be good Samaritans, giving thanks at the table set for us, Jesus love overflowing. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Thurs., Nov. 13: Phlm 7-20; Luke 17:20-25 Frances Xavier Cabrini, virgin Have him back... no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother.... Welcome him as you would me. Paul s Letter to Philemon is the Gettysburg Address of the New Testament, a miniature of the whole Gospel message. Some say, The Bible got slavery wrong, so what good is it? But can you imagine this letter in your inbox? It s a bolt of lightning as gentle as a kiss. There s only one theme in the Bible, and he s called Jesus, Yahweh saves. It is fitting that today we celebrate the first American saint, Mother Cabrini. If we are looking for Jesus, she shows the way a simple way, where the poor take the lead. Her prayer: Grant that, for your love, I may remain obscure and unknown in this world, to be known only to you. Fri., Nov. 14: 2 John 4-9; Luke 17:26-37 Remember the wife of Lot. People sometimes engage in empty debates about whether Noah s flood really happened. Look at Jesus take on it: It wasn t the flood, but our complacency that drowned us. The same goes for So -dom. Was it the wrath of God? No, our own wasting indifference. Kurt Vonnegut, in Slaughterhouse-Five, memorably redeems Lot s wife: But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human. So she was turned into a pillar of salt. The salt of her own tears. Watch for these strange events, past and predicted, as Jesus approaches Jerusalem, another city under judgment. The apostles are already desperate: Where, Lord, will the Day of the Lord be revealed? To face that day, John s plea in the first reading is all we need: Let us love one another. With all my heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commands. Sat., Nov. 15: 3 John 5-8; Luke 18:1-8 Pray always without becoming weary. Here, a widow challenges a dishonest judge, who, in Jesus provocative parable, stands in for God the Father. In The Lord, a prophetic anticipation of Vatican II, Romano Guardini said that God is not afraid to make atheism easy for us, to honor our freedom. How difficult it is to recognize the self-revealing God! The judge surrenders to the widow s strikes, and prayer will do the same for us, but even more quickly, if we just widow God down. Jesus is running to Jerusalem for us, to make our case. Is this too good to be true? Jesus seems to know our doubts: But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! Next Sunday: November 16, 2014 Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5,; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6; Matthew 25:14-30 or 25:14-15, 19-21
