Pastor John has a BA in Religion from Florida State, a Masters from Yale Divinity and a TH. D from Harvard Divinity. He has been serving as a part time pastor in New England since 2015 at Community UMC in Brighton, MA. John will be commissioned as a Provisional Elder in the New England Conference in June of 2017 when he will officially take on the title of Reverend. His previous work includes furniture sales, youth counseling, archive work, teaching and editing. John has been on the Board of Directors of a housing project in Allston, MA on behalf of his current ministry. He has also been involved in Imagine No Malaria and he has made good connections with Cooper Community Center (Roxbury, MA) in his current appointment. Pastor John has a lifelong passion for ministry and theological study and finds great joy in helping others to find and deepen their lives of faith and live out their calling to be instruments of God s grace in the world. Pastor John is married to Elizabeth Whitley. They have 3 children: Will (Age 10), Leila (Age 8) and Sybil (2 Months). SPRC will be working with Pastor John over the next several weeks to assist in making his transition as smooth as possible. More information will follow in next month s bulletin.

2 A Message from Pastor Casey What a great April just experienced. Now on to May. May is my last month leading worship at MUMC except for June 18, my last Sunday. I write that with a heavy heart. Certainly my appointment in Maine is like going home, a place near and dear to me yet at the same time I will be leaving some wonderful friends behind and a church family who have increasingly over the last year been more accepting and open and have accomplished so much for God in community. Praise be! I have been in ministry close to 30 years and yet God continues to surprise me. You d think I d realize by now that as much as we might like to know and plan our future, God s hands still have the final push. When moving to Milford I did not expect to leave in 2 years time yet with MUMC s help (for the good and bad!) I am leaving as a stronger person, more convinced than ever that God s love is wider than any voice that says otherwise. A visitor to church yesterday from California sought us out specifically because MUMC is a reconciling congregation. Not the first visitor to say that! There were so many people welcoming her I had to wait my turn. Keep it up MUMC, and you will make an incredible amount of new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. MUMC has changed so much this year, no matter what it took to get to this point. It is a stronger, more vital congregation in the ways that make a difference, in the ways that make disciples, in the ways that lead to God s future. May this last month together be one of joy, laughter, fellowship and love. See you in church. Outreach Page 2

For more info contact Pat Rafter. (icu2per@aol.com or ) or visit the Crop Walk table in the Narthex. Remember we can all pray for a successful event! May 7, 2 P.M. at St. Patrick's church. Mark your calendars for our spring concert on Sunday May 21, 2017, at 7 p.m. We are excited to bring you a concert entitled Is That a Hymn I Hear? which will be based on beloved hymns of our faith. Each musical group including the MUMC Band, Praise Band, Bell, Grace Notes Ensemble and of course, the Chancel, will be doing arrangements of familiar hymn tunes. We will also be inviting the audience to sing some favorites too. So you get two for one an awesome concert and a fun hymn sing. Please plan to join us and invite family and friends so that we can fill the sanctuary with music and then have a time of refreshments and fellowship afterwards. I look forward to seeing you there! 6 Youth Group News From Kerri-Lynn Kimner The youth group will be holding the last event of the year on Friday May 12, from 7-9 p.m. (Rain date May 19) Join us for a bonfire here on the church property. Come spend some time with friends, eat s mores, and enjoy a night around the fire. We hope to see you all! Willing recipients A young graduate longed for a certain sports car and knew his dad could afford it. So on the big day, he was infuriated to receive instead a leather-bound, embossed Bible. He threw it down and left for good. Years later, after his father died, the son entered his father s study with sorrow and regret. Sorting through belongings, he found the gift and this highlighted verse: If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:11, ESV). Suddenly something dropped from the back of the Bible: a key with a tag from the dealer of the car he d wanted long ago. On the tag was his graduation date and the words Paid in Full. How often we miss out on God s generous gifts because they come packaged differently than we expect! At graduation and throughout life may we be open to every gift God bestows on us with a Father s deep love. Published in: May 2017 In May we are collecting Canned Ham, Side Dishes (seasoned pasta mix, hamburger helper, etc.), Ravioli & Beefaroni. If you see any of these folks around church or town, be sure to wish them a happy day! 8 Lamplighter s Bible Study From Carol Rowlette & Elaine Driscoll "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse: from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on himthe spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and of power, the spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11: 1 3 In the many prophecies to follow, Isaiah warns the nation of God s anger and judgements on their rebellion. Chapter 4:1 The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; Once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens will join them and unite with the house of Jacob. All women are invited to join us as we continue with our study of Isaiah. Within our group we use a variety of study Bibles which help us to gain understanding and encourage interesting discussions. 9 Administrative Council News From Callie McMahon This month at Administrative Council we celebrated the joy of our Holy week and Easter Services. What a moving time to be in church! Walking through Holy week with Jesus contemporaries was thought provoking, it really felt like we were seated with Jesus at the last Supper and on Easter, we learned about the meaning of empty tomb from May Magdeline. CAM Needs Christian Aftercare Ministries is always in need of new, gently used and in good repair: microwaves (small or medium), TV's, refrigerators (small), coffeemakers, winter clothes, shoes, socks, sneakers (athletic shoes), boots, slacks (Dockers), pots and pans, gift cards, towels, sheets (single or double), tableware, etc. Items may be placed in the CAM box in the church foyer, or transported directly to their building at 50 Lowell Street in Manchester. Contact the office if you d like more information Trustees has completed the parsonage and church walk-thru and have a punch list to work especially as we anticipate the arrival of our new pastor. Trustee s also announced that Levi Sunday will be May 21 after services. There is plenty to be done. Our Youth group is getting ready to celebrate the end of their year with a bon-fire and will be preparing for their mission trip fast approaching. They had 2 successful fundraisers and are expecting kids to attend the mission trip. Sign up to walk in the Crop walk on May 7, bring your Mom for ice cream on May 13th, and plan to attend the concert on the 21st. So much to do here! I Love MUMC Outreach Page 9
