We ve been building on successive years of comprehensive Christian Formation for all ages. In the last two years, participation in Adult offerings has increased 400%. The content of spiritual conversations among our youth has deepened and familiarity with the biblical narrative in our children has broadened. The kinds of service and the expansiveness of our commitment to La Escuelita San Marcos and Ranson Middle School makes St. Mark s an ideal Community Faith Partner. We hear this often. Our Pastoral Care Committee is sending more cards, making more visits, following the progress of more members than in the previous decade. The Welcome Ministry is newly energized and we hear newcomers feel warmly received and encouraged to join wherever called. Thanks to funds pledged in our 2008 Legacy Campaign, and the extensive maintenance plan of our Building and Grounds Committee, the campus looks well kept. We take seriously the mission of the church and consistently ask in our planning and execution; how does this activity help us know Christ and make him known. On Sunday, September 10, we will do what so many churches do the first Sunday after Labor Day. In our Rally Day, we will worship together, unveil new formation offerings, showcase our ministries and invite participation, present the 2018 funding strategy, offer a new music ministry and introduce a working idea for a new building and eat lunch and ride the finest church water slide. It should be a good day signaling a good year for a community that loves God and neighbor. Find details of the day in the following pages. Looking forward, 1

Meet Scott Foppiano our new ORGANIST-CHOIRMASTER Scott Foppiano was born in Memphis, T N and began studying the piano at an early age under Evelyn Maschmeyer of the Memphis Beethoven Club and, soon thereafter, organ with Dr. John L. Hooker at Calvary Episcopal Church. While a student at the Parish School of St. Paul the Apostle he began playing for school liturgies and, in time, for weekend Parish Masses as well. During his years at Christian Brothers High School (the De La Salle Brothers) he experienced his first movie palace and theatre pipe organ at the Orpheum in downtown Memphis. "Bitten by the bug," he was allowed to begin learning to play the theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer organ and was soon thereafter playing for show and movie overtures and intermissions. Following his family's relocation to Charlotte, he entered the NC School of the Arts as a Keenan scholarship student of Dr. John and Margaret Mueller. Subsequent formal studies brought him under the tutelage of Dr. David Lowry at Winthrop University, Donna Robertson at Mars Hill College and Dr. Robert Glasgow at the University of Michigan. Privately, he continued study of the organ with William Whitehead of Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Hills and with his best friend and mentor the late, great Thomas Hazleton with whom he studied the arts of classical organ, transcription playing and theatre organ stylings. During these years he served as Senior House Organist of the fabulous Fox Theatre in Detroit and was a regular "movie organist" at both Detroit's Redford Theatre and also the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor. He holds a BMus, MMus, Serv Pl and CAGO of the AGO, Certification of Liturg ical Programming from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and training in Gregorian Chant with the Benedictine Monks at L Abbaye St. Pierre in Solesmes, France. Scott has recorded eight solo digital compact disc recordings to date with future projects pending. Having served on the administrative boards of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society and the American Theatre Organ Society, he has performed for their conventions at both local and national levels. In 2001 his choir made a pilgrimage-tour of Italy, the culmination of which was their singing the Latin Solemn Mass in St. Peter's Basilica where he played the great organ and directed their singing. Additionally, following the Mass, they were formally presented to +His Holiness Pope Saint John Paul II. He has served notable congregations nationwide including the National Basilica Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, MI where he oversaw the restoration of the 1933, 100-rank Geo. Kilgen and Son pipe organ designed by Charles Courboin and voiced by Henry Vincent Willis, the largest extant Kilgen organ in existence and historically certified by the OHS. He served as Organist-Choirmaster at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, a traditional Latin Tridentine Mass parish of the Society of St. Pius X, in Kansas City, MO where his duties there include d playing the organ for all Parish Masses, the training and direction of the Men's Chant Schola, the Parish Choir and the Boys Choir. He teaches piano, vocal coaching, classical organ and theatre organ privately. In 2007 he was honored with the title of ATOS Organist of the Year and was presented in solo recital at the Cadet Chapel of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In addition to his ecclesiastical duties and also serving as the Organist and Accompanist at Temple Beth El in Charlotte, Scott maintains a busy schedule as a solo organ performer and silent photoplay accompanist. He is excited to be with St. Mark s and is looking forward to getting to know the parishioners here. 2

August 1, 2017 St. Mark s Episcopal Church 8600 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road Huntersville, NC Dear Members of St. Mark s Episcopal Church, Somewhere between becoming an adult and being a kid, a teen is discovering who they are and who they want to be. Summer Day Camp creates an environment where teens can be themselves, explore exciting new things, cultivate friendships and create lasting memories. We are grateful to the members of St. Mark s Episcopal Church for recognizing the life-transforming benefits of summer camp, and for making camp possible for children in our community who could not afford to attend without your help. Your gift of $4515 provided 10 teens from Ranson Middle School with four weeks of summer camp at the McCrorey Family YMCA including transportation to and from camp and their summer meals. Thank you for providing a transformational experience for these students and for your partnership with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Ranson Middle School. Together, we can change lives. Sincerely, Jemarion Young McCrorey Family YMCA Senior Program Director 9

Farmworkers Mission Trip September 22nd -24th We will travel once again to eastern North Carolina to provide excellent meals, fellowship and support to our fellow farmworkers through the Episcopal Farmworkers Ministry. This year instead of collecting items to take we would like to participate in the water in the fields campaign Monetary donations of as little as $7.50 can make a huge impact. See the information below for details on this program. Checks can be made out to St. Mark s. Please note Farmworkers in the memo line. If you would like to join us on this trip please contact Mike michael.tinsley@hdrinc.com or Philip plloyd13@att.net for additional information. Farm field work is hard work with long hours under a hot sun. Humidity is high, temperatures are often above 90 degrees, and farmworker access to drinking water is often limited. The water is on the edge of the field. Sometimes it takes us an hour and a half to get from one side of the field to the other and come back. (Farmworker interviewed by Juan Carabana of Episcopal Farmworker Ministry, July 2015.) Among farmworkers, heatstroke is the leading cause of death, representing a rate nearly 20 times greater than for U.S. civilian workers. (Report released by Oxfam and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) in 2011 citing the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)) You Can Help. Give a farmworker easier access and control over their hydration What 1 Farmworker Receives from a $7.50 contribution: 1 Canvas Pouch with belt loops, sized to hold various bottle sizes 1 removable felt liner for added insulation 1 bottle of sports drink with electrolytes, and also chosen for bottle refill durability 10

Dear Ones, The Outreach Commi3ee of our Dear Body has hosted a Thanksgiving meal in our Fellowship Hall for several years. Our original intenaon was to include our St. Mark s family as well as those from our larger community. In prior years we have not been as successful in reaching the greater community as we had hoped. This year we have decided to concentrate on St. Mark s families and friends. We asked through a survery what the people of St. Mark s would prefer. The survey showed us that the people of St. Mark s would prefer to gather in homes rather than at the church. People want to invite and people want to join others in celebraang giving thanks to God for their many blessings. In the coming months opportuniaes will be available to sign up. Be encouraged to sign up as either a host or a guest in the home of a fellow parishioner. In the meaname if you have quesaons or would like addiaonal informaaon please contact Marilyn Wooten at or mandfwooten@carolina.rr.com 11

KNIT CROCHET PRAY St Mark s Prayer Shawl Ministry For several years St. Mark s pastoral care ministry has provided prayer shawls to many parishioners as well as friends, family members, and coworkers in times of illness, grief, loss and various other times of need. We have recently prepared kits with yarn and simple patterns that are ready to be made.
