2 EPIPHANY: January 6 March 8, 2011 (Pulpit Attire is Green) The word Epiphany is from the Greek word epiphaneia, which means manifestation or appearance. The Season of Epiphany begins January 6th (the traditional date of Jesus baptism), and continues 4 9 weeks depending on the date of Easter. Attention in the celebration is given to the coming of the Wise Men, the baptism of Jesus, and his first miracle of the turning of water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana. The accent is on JESUS as the revealer of GOD to mankind, the missionary and the evangelistic ministries are emphasized. In many sections of the world, even in America, Epiphany is called Old Christmas, because the two seasons used to be combined. General Theme For This Quarter: ASSURING HOPE The study this quarter focuses on the promises of hope found in the words of the prophet Isaiah and the hope found in Christ, the Suffering Servant. The first two units look at tests from Isaiah to study the prophet s message as told to Israel. We look at Isaiah s message of comfort and hope in the context of Israel s destruction and subsequent captitivity in Babylon. The final unit looks at the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy as it unfolds through Christ. The texts for Unit III come from Mark s gospel. 4 MOBC Mt. Olive Members Only Immediate Opening Internal Recruitment Church Clerk Volunteer Position Mt. Olive Baptist Church is seeking a responsible individual to serve as Church Clerk on a volunteer basis. There are no benefits associated with this position. The preferred candidate will have some prior experience. Criminal History Background Check and Drug Screening are required. Duties and Responsibilities: Recording/reading of minutes in church meeting and transcribing them. Approximately two hours is spent recording the minutes in each of the church meetings. Outside of the time spent in regularly scheduled, quarterly and/or called church meetings, an additional two hours is spent transcribing minutes from each meeting. Interested church members may pick up an application from the church office or submit a resume in lieu of the application. Attention All Leaders and Potential Leaders The Annual Virginia Union University Church Leadership Conference is scheduled for March 12 and 19, Location: Virginia Union University Coburn Hall Time: 8:30 am 3:00 pm Conference information is located in your church mail box and on the information table outside the Church Office. The theme for the conference is "Leadership: Helping Persons Grow in Ministry Service." The conference will include Worship, Panel Discussion on A New Approach to Ministry in the 21st Century. The first phase of implementing our Bible Institute will launch on Wednesday, March 16 with our first 6 weeks Certificate Class. Biblical Studies Track 2 Timothy 3: Survey of the Old Testament Students will engage in an in depth of the Old Testament. Part 1 The Pentateuch the first five books in the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) Don't miss the first class on March 16. In this class students will gain an understanding of the Bible as a whole, Canon of Scripture, Inspiration of the Bible and much more. 5 MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! The History of Black History Month Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as Black History Month. What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied or even documented when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the of Afro American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The Way of Life Bible Bee The Way of Life Spiritual Development Center in Partnership with Oral Roberts University is sponsoring a Bible Bee for children and adults on Saturday, April 9, 2011, 9:00 a.m. at New Canaan Baptist Church, 4712 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA The format of the Bible Bee is similar to the National Spelling Bee. Olive for this giveaway. Seniors Ages 60 Plus Free food boxes will be distributed to seniors every third Wednesday from 11:00 to 12:00 pm. STOP!!! Members, don't throw those medicine bottles away! The hospitals in Haiti needs them. Please remove the labels and place your empty bottles in the container outside the church office.
