2 The Christian Season of EPIPHANY: January 6 February 16 The color for Epiphany is GREEN. The color GREEN stands for life and growth. The color of the table cloth on the Communion table and podium are changed to GREEN to indicate the season. The pulpit dress is changed according to the season of the Christian Calendar. Look for further information on the Christian Calendar and pulpit dress colors in the near future. General Theme For This Quarter: (Pulpit Attire is Green) CHRIST, THE FULFILLMENT The study this quarter focuses on Matthew s gospel, which confirms the fulfillment of God s promise to send the Messiah. Throughout its pages, references are made to Old Testament prophecies that were fulfilled in Jesus. The writer gives other evidence through events and people s reactions that point to Jesus as the Christ. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #3 TESTIMONIES TO JESUS AS MESSIAH The final four lessons consider the witness of individuals who helped confirm Jesus as the Messiah: a Canaanite woman recognized Jesus power; impetuous Peter spoke out in faith, though he did not understand what the was saying; Peter, James and John witnessed Christ s transfiguration; and Mary of Bethany showed her faith by her anointing Jesus. 4 MOBC Mount Olive Baptist Church Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden The members, ministries and friends of Mount Olive Baptist Church are being offered an opportunity to capture our spiritual journey of praise and thanksgiving. An area between the Multi purpose facility and the Sanctuary has been designated as a Prayer, Praise and Meditation Garden. This area will feature engraved brick pavers placed in memory, honor, celebration and encouragement of the life of a loved one. Additionally, pavers will recognize a birth, christening, baptism, wedding anniversary and event or favorite scripture. This ongoing project will secure donations to fund the installation of the garden as well as support for the building fund. The garden will contain 840 pavers creating a lasting memory to recognize loved ones, special events and our walk of faith within the Mount Olive Family. The engraved pavers are available in two sizes. The 4 x 8 paver can be purchased for $ and the 8 x 8 will cost $ x 8 center pavers, which will surround the two cornerstones from previous church structures, will be available for $ Each paver must be paid in full at the time of purchase. For additional information, please pick up a paver brochure from the information table outside of the church office. Paver orders will be received after each morning services through May 30 th. 5 MOBC The History of Black History Month Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as Black History Month. What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied or even documentedwhen the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Henry "Box" Brown My name is Henry Box Brown. They call me that cause I was a Virginia slave who escaped to freedom by mailing myself in a dry goods container from Richmond to Philadelphia. I was born into slavery in 1815 in Louisa County, Virginia and was sent to Richmond in 1830 to work in a tobacco factory. I saved up my wages to pay the master of my wife Nancy and our three kids for time she spent caring for them. But my wife and kids was sold anyhow to a slave trader and sent to North Carolina. I was heartbroken and powerless to stop this awful thing from happening. I was so upset that I decided I would mail myself to freedom! My journey lasted for about 27 hours. My box traveled by way of wagon, then railroad, steamboat, wagon again, railroad, ferry, railroad, and finally delivery wagon. Whoa! Can you image that kinda trip? How many times the workers placed my box upside down tossed it to and fro. I tell you...it was by the grace o God I was able to stay still enough to avoid them finding me. When my box finally reached Philadelphia and some abolitionist let me out my first words was "How do you do, gentlemen?" And I sang a psalm from the Bible I for my moment of freedom. The Christian Season of Epiphany Matthew 2: After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. The word Epiphany is from the Greek word epiphaneia, which means manifestation or appearance. The Season of Epiphany begins January 6th (the traditional date of Jesus baptism), and continues 4-9 weeks depending on the date of Easter. Attention in the celebration is given to the coming of the Wise Men, the baptism of Jesus, and his first miracle of the turning of water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana. The accent is on JESUS as the revealer of GOD to mankind, the missionary and the evangelistic ministries are emphasized. In many sections of the world, even in America, Epiphany is called Old Christmas, because the two seasons used to be combined. On the Day of Epiphany, January 6, we celebrate Christ s being revealed to the world and the visit of the wise men, the first Gentiles to whom He was made known. Scripture does not say how many wise men came to Bethlehem. At various times tradition has set the number from two to twelve. However, because three gifts are mentioned, today we usually think of three wise men or Magi. January 6 February 16
