One day the preacher was walking home and noticed a little mischievous boy playing with some old birds in a beat up, rusty birdcage. The preacher asked the boy, " Son, what are you going to do with those birds? The boy said, " Well, I m going to poke them with a stick...then I m going to pull out the feathers...then I m going to feed them to my cat!" Well that preacher had a soft heart and felt sorry for those birds and asked the boy, " How much do you want for them?" What? You don t want these old birds they re

2 2 worthless...they can t mean anything to you." The preacher replied, How much?" That boy sized the preacher up and said, Well, ten dollars." And that preacher took out a wallet and gave that boy a ten dollar bill and then took those birds over to nice patch of green grass under a shade tree. The preacher gently opened the door of that cage and coerced those pitiful birds to come out of that cage and into freedom years ago, the devil came to Jesus and said, Yep! I just caught me a world full of people down there!" And Jesus asked him, What are you going to do with them?" The devil replied, Well, I m going to teach them how to hate each other, and lie to each other, and build bombs to destroy each other, I m going to teach them to steal and to drink and to do drugs...and on and on he went." And Jesus asked, And then what are you going to do with them?" The devil s response was, Well, I guess I ll just kill them!" Then Jesus asked, " How much do you want for them?" And the devil wondered, Why in the world would you want these people? Why they will just hate you, and despise you, and betray you, and they will even beat you and crucify you! You don t want them!!!" And Jesus said once again, How much!" And the devil replied, " All your tears and all your blood." And the Lord Jesus said, DONE!" As March 1st quickly approaches as the beginning of Lent, take time to remember why we take those 40 days and journey with Jesus to the cross. Let s remember the significance of that act of love for you and for me. That Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried and was risen again. Mission Efforts...and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works Hebrews 10:24 People to People/Salvation Army Have you been donating to this outreach? From Gerri Williams The Faithful Path Round Table The group who participated in Choosing the Faithful Path have completed the study, but the work is not done. We are holding a listening table event on Sunday, Feb. 19 following worship. A light meal will be provided as the whole church is invited to gather around tables to share YOUR dreams, hopes, and vision for the future of the Creston Canaan UMC. We want to hear your voice. We want to hear your ideas, dreams, visions, and ministry ideas. Everything shared around tables in small groups will be gathered and then used by the board to help us to discern a path into the future for our church. Please plan to join us that day. Let your voice be heard. From Pastor Deb Ash Wednesday Lent begins with our Ash Wednesday worship at 6:30am on Mar. 1. There will be a short worship service with the imposition of the ashes. Following will be a light breakfast before you head off for your day. Lenten Bible Study Beginning Mar. 7th, Tuesdays at 10am and 6:30pm, we will have a special Bible Study for Lent by Bishop Reuben P. Job. The study is Listen: Praying in a Noisy World. The study is 6 weeks and is for those new to prayer, those who already have a daily prayer routine, and those whose lives seem too busy to pray. We live in a world of noise. Everywhere we go, we hear sounds that compete for our minds and hearts. Listening to God requires a deliberate choice to shut out the chaos around us and focus our thoughts. The study offers a focus on listening prayer and prayer as a two-way conversation. As we learn to listen, we find a new depth and fulfillment in our relationship with God and a new experience of God as guide and companion in our lives. Holy Week Palm Sunday is April 9th. Come! Celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Maundy Thursday is April 13. Our service will begin at 7:00pm. The worship experience will include Holy Communion as we come together to remember Jesus Last Supper with his disciples before his arrest. Good Friday is April 14. We will begin with our Cross Walk at the park at 10:30am (weather permitting). The Cross Walk will end at the church and the worship service will begin at noon. Easter Come Easter Morning, April 16th, for the Son- Rise Service at 7am followed by Easter Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall. There will be Sunday School for all ages at 9:30am and our Traditional Easter Celebration at 10:45am. From Pastor Deb From the Finance Committee We wanted to let everyone know that through increased giving we were able to pay our shared giving/apportionments in full for 2016! 2nd year in a row!! Thanks to everyone for their support and prayers! We will also be able to send the January 2017 portion by the end of January. The current operating funds to date are as of 1/22/17: Year to Date needs: $ ($

5 5 needed weekly to make budget); Year to Date collected: $ We are hoping to keep checking off projects that the trustees have made for the upkeep of our church building. Thank you to everyone who are supporting and praying for our church and church family! From Linda Kauf Christian Education Sunday School There is a Sunday class for everyone! Notes Christmas Thank You Chuck and I would like to thank you for the very generous Christmas gift you gave us again this year. Not to take away from what you do for us at Christmas...but the best gift of all is each of you and the friendship you share with us. May God bless you all in this New Year! Thank You I want to thank my church family for the generous gift at Christmas. Your thoughtfulness was very appreciated. From Robin King Thank You To the CCUMC Congregation, Thank you so much for your generous monetary gift for Christmas! It is a great feeling knowing my music is appreciated! God bless all! Thank You to anyone who helped or will help with snow and ice removal at the church! VERY much appreciated! Did you know that we have a group of homeschoolers meeting in our fellowship hall on occasion? They are called GLUE (Gather, Learn, Unite, Educate) and they left a nice collection of supplies for the church as a thank you to us for use of the facilities. 20+C+M+B+17 The three Wise Men, Caspar Melchoir, and Balthasar followed the star of God s Son two thousand and seventeen years ago. May Christ bless our church home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen. Ralph & Annabel and Garrison & John

6 CRESTON CANAAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 166 SOUTH MAIN STREET P.O. BOX 1111 CRESTON, OH The Voice Newsletter of the Creston Canaan United Methodist Church I believe three things must go together in our justification: upon God s part, His great mercy and grace; upon Christ s part, the satisfaction of God s justice, by the offering His body and shedding His blood, and fulfilling the law of God perfectly; and upon our part, true and living faith in the merits of Jesus Christ. ~~~John Wesley
