1 the Encourager MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE NORTH PARK CHURCH OF CHRIST CELEBRATE When I was a child I remember that for a long time we did not have very much money. We did not get drinks at restaurants (except for very special occasions), we did not get lots of new things very often, and we did not have big birthday celebrations. For the most part we lived fairly simple lives and went about our days joyfully. Now I say we did not have big birthday celebrations, but by that I do not mean we had no celebration. It was just simpler than many of our friends and neighbors usually had (at least as I can recall). I specifically remember one birthday where we had several families over, ate hot dogs, had cake and just played around. Our big game was dropping pencils into jars to get the prize of a cheap plastic squiggly monster to attach to the top of said pencil. I was probably in Kindergarten or 1 st grade, but all I remember is that we had a blast and loved every second of it. In fact thought I cannot remember much about my birthday celebrations from my teen and adult years, I still remember that one. It was simple, but it was a time of joy and celebration and we reveled in it with all we had. Continued on next page... 2 Celebrate cont. I bring up this story because so often in our adult lives it becomes very easy to believe that if we cannot celebrate God and our spiritual walk in big and bold ways, there must either be something wrong with us or there is just nothing really worth celebrating over. Much like how many in the world today view a child s birthday celebration as a go big or go home event, we can feel our spiritual celebration must be the same. We can sometimes feel that unless we can get enough people together or make it fancy enough or make it a big enough deal, we might as well either do something tiny and half-hearted or not do it at all. But this is the farthest thing from the truth. The truth of the matter is that we can celebrate in big or small ways, and it does not matter which it is. What matters is the celebration of God s goodness, His love for us and the relationship we have with Him. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:9-13 Celebration is a good thing for us to do as Christians. It keeps us from becoming tired and burnt out, and it gives us hope and energy to continue moving forward. David danced before the Ark of the Covenant as it was brought into Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6), there is celebration in heaven when one returns to Christ (Luke 15:7) and there was rejoicing when Paul converted the jailer (Acts 16:34). We need to remember that being with God is cause for joy! Our faith has always been meant to be a celebration, not a funeral dirge. So I want to encourage you look for ways to see God and revel in the glory and salvation He has given! There is no need for us to act as though the lightning bolt is hanging over us. We are those who have been saved by the blood of Jesus to a new life, and that is great! Don t worry about whether you celebration is big enough. Just celebrate! Who knows? You may be only to realize later that it was the purest and most memorable way in the end
