1 March, 2018 SPONSORSHIP - PILGRIMS NEEDED!!!! Now is the time to ask that potential Pilgrim about attending the Walk. Sponsoring someone is a gift of love. First pray about it and ask God to give you the words to approach a potential Pilgrim. Potential Pilgrims should be regular attendees or members of a local church, not have any emotional issues which would get in the way of the week-end and want to deepen their relationship with God. You may have felt the nudge to ask a friend or associate to attend Emmaus but you don t know what to tell them or how to approach the subject. Explain to them the time commitment ~ they must set aside time from Thursday night until Sunday. Explain the lovely accommodations. Let them know that this is a time set aside to come closer to God, to better understand God s will for your life and have a better understanding of what it means to be a Christian in today s world. Although there is plenty of fun on the week-end, let them know there is also a time of worship each day. If you have questions on how to sponsor, ask the person who sponsored you! They did a great job! You can also ask any Board member or the Registrar for help. Don t worry about agape or other duties at this point. The Registrar will give you detailed instructions later. You are not alone! Don t let fees get in the way either. We have scholarships if needed. Do get the application in now. Calendars fill up and the more you wait, the less likely folks will be able to attend. Get an application from the web site or the Registrar. Complete it as soon as possible and mail it in to the PO Box on the form. There is also sponsorship information on the web site. Christ is counting on you! Sponsors will receive specific information from the Registrar as to Personal Agape. General Agape is encouraged by everyone in the Community! Computer generated agape or trinkets for bed agape are welcomed for Team and Pilgrims. Hand written notes can be particularly meaningful. It is helpful if you alphabetize your agape (if it is for specific people) and bring it down to the retreat center on Thursday night. If you know a Pilgrim, you may submit a note even if it is not part of the Personal Agape collected by the Sponsor. If you don t know the Pilgrim personally it is still appropriate to write a note. Don t forget the Team. If possible, include items for team. Bring any and all Agape down on Thursday night. Send it down with a team member if you are not going down yourself. We have assembled a fantastic team this year and I can t wait to see what God has in store for us. Right now our focus is on Pilgrims. Let s make this a great Walk with a full complement of Pilgrims. All it takes is a phone call or maybe a face to face visit to inspire someone who really needs to be there on the Weekend. Team meetings start next month, so please be praying for both teams, that we will do God s will and glorify him in our preparations. Scott Caldwell, Lay Director E-111 REMINDERS Photography, other than the official Week-end photos, is not permitted on the Week-end. It is tempting at Candlelight and Closing to take out your cell phones and snap a photo but please respect the privacy of the Pilgrims and refrain from taking photographs. Children are not appropriate for Candlelight or Closing but are always welcome at Gatherings or other Community events. Our San Diego Walk to Emmaus web site contains the latest calendar information. 5 Page 5 FROM WHERE I SIT DE COLORES As you know, the Men s Walk E111 and Women s Walk E112 will be coming up in April, which is not far away! The dates for men are April 12-15, and for the women are April It is right around the corner and it is definitely not too soon to start thinking of who you may want to sponsor for these Walks. Talk to your friends and members of your congregation and share the excitement of how the Walk to Emmaus affected and changed your life and how you would love to have them take part in this spiritual experience. As of today (Feb. 15th), I have one Pilgrim application in hand for each of the Men s and Women s Walks. I have been told there are five more men and three more women. If you are working on the team, I need your team application and check. If you have given me your application please send a check to the post office box. Both applications can be found on the SDEmmaus.org website. The fees for Pilgrims are $ ($50.00 Pilgrim, and Sponsor). Full-time team members pay an $80.00 fee, and part-time team members pay a $25.00 fee per day. Again, there will be NO change in the mailing address. Janet Smith, San Diego Emmaus Registrar Janetsmith23@att.net SDEmmausregistrar@att.net THOUGHTS FROM THE COMMUNITY SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR I remember reading a story some time ago about a Girls' Championship Softball Game; it was the bottom of the 9th inning and there were two outs and nobody was on base. The crowd was cheering loudly because their home run hitter was up! She took the third pitch and drilled it over the fence behind center field! Half-way to first base, though, the batter turned her ankle, and the injury was so painful she could not put any weight on it. The run would not count if she was unable to touch all the bases. According to the rules, no member of her team could help her. Suddenly, one of the girls from the opposing team motioned to a teammate, and they carried the home run hero along the base path, making sure her good foot touched each base. The roar of the crowd was deafening! On the way home from church one Sunday, a little girl turned to her mother and said she was confused by what the preacher said during the sermon. When her mother asked why, the girl said "He said that God is bigger than we are. Is that true?" Her mother answered that it was. "Well, the little girl said, "If God is bigger than we are, and lives in us, wouldn't He show through?" During this season of Lent, I propose each of us prayerfully considers how we can allow the compassion, peace, mercy, and love of God to "show through" or more appropriately flow through us to others, by the power of His Holy Spirit at work in our lives! From the time teams are formed, people are praying for God s will to be done on the week-ends. Prayer is the heart of the week-ends. Our San Diego week-ends are entered on a prayer vigil web site, just like week-ends throughout the world. Sacristans for the week-end enter our information and folks from all over the world sign up. How beautiful to know that communities and folks all around the world are praying for our week-ends and we are praying for theirs. If you are not already connected to your Emmaus brothers and sisters through a reunion group, think about joining one of these groups or contact some of your Emmaus brothers and or sisters and start a new group in your area. Now is the time for reunion groups to start discussing and praying for those God is putting on your heart to attend the Walks (E111 and E112) this spring. Make praying for new Pilgrims part of your group's action plan.
