Trinity United Methodist Church June 2017 The Chimes Brothers and Sisters in Christ, To say that this past month has been pivotal in the life of the United Methodist Church would be an understatement. On April 28, the Judicial Council (the Supreme Court of the denomination) ruled that the Western Jurisdictional Conference s consecration of Bishop Oliveto, a married lesbian, was contrary to church law. At the same time, however, Bishop Oliveto remains in good standing and retains her office while complaints against her are processed and reviewed according to our Book of Discipline. That process will take several months I am sure. The bottom line of the Judicial Council decision is that it is a mixed bag, and it indicates the deep divide in the United Methodist Church over issues of biblical authority and human sexuality. That divide is so deep that at General Conference in 2016 the Council of Bishops created the Commission on a Way Forward as a way of bridging the divide or, failing that, presenting a plan of separation for the denomination. That Commission will present its proposal for debate and voting at a special called General Conference in February of I anticipate that will be the defining moment for the future of the United Methodist Church. As with the Bishop s election last summer, there are some who are happy and some who are angry with the Judicial Council decision. I am grateful for those of you who have expressed their commitment to remain with the UMC regardless of events at the denominational level. I also hear and appreciate the concerns of those who think it might be time to leave the denomination behind or send a message through withholding their giving. I understand the temptation to want to react quickly and decisively to events as they unfold. However, I would like to present another alternative to which I think God calls us, and that is patience. It s interesting to me that all of this is happening as we are preparing for the season of Pentecost, which begins June 4 th. The Book of Acts reveals that when Jesus commissioned his disciples right before his ascension, the first thing he told them to do was to wait to wait for the Holy Spirit and power from on high (Acts 1:4). We are generally not good at waiting (I know I am not!) but Luke tells us that the Holy Spirit came upon the gathered disciples at Pentecost only after they had engaged in a period of waiting, watching, and prayer. When the Spirit came, a new church was born. 1 Continued >

Pastor Wiley s letter continued I believe that we are on the cusp of a new Methodist movement that will be created and sent by the Spirit. If we act too quickly by charging off in a particular direction or giving in to anger and frustration, we may miss the greater future the Spirit has in store for us. Two years from now the United Methodist Church will likely look very different than it does today, and we can be part of shaping that new future as it unfolds. In the meantime, however, we have to wait on the Spirit and, like the disciples gathered at Pentecost, we need to remain all together in one place (Acts 2:1). I urge those of you who are concerned about denominational events to stay at the table, continue your faithful discipleship, and support your local church through your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. It may seem like a hard thing to do in contentious times like these, but Jesus never calls us to do the easy thing. The Enemy would like nothing more than to scatter us like sheep, but Jesus the Good Shepherd calls us to stay together and follow him. Nothing has changed in the way we do things on a daily basis at Peace and Trinity churches. The dayto-day practice of ministry continues and the cause of Christ will be advanced through our churches regardless of denominational disputes. We will continue to uphold our church s doctrine and Discipline, and we will continue to welcome all people and build them up as followers of Jesus Christ who love and serve God and neighbor. There is a way forward and we will walk it together! Peace, Rev. Wiley Gladney Sunday School News The Sunday School year has ended and I would like to thank all of the teachers that helped make this year a success. We have added new families to the program and are looking at some exciting changes to the curriculum. Thank you again Chris Shannon, Mary Otto, Heather Vig, Stephanie Shannon, Beata Elliott & Melissa Sprecher for investing your time in the lives of our youth. Have a safe and blessed summer. Barb Shannon A nursery attendant is available from 9:00 to 11:00 in the first floor pre-school room for Sunday worship. Ages 5 and under are welcome. Activity bags are located in the back of the sanctuary for those children who will be sitting through the church service. Sunday School will resume in September. 2

Youth Mission Event The Wildfire! Youth Mission Event in Superior will be held July 9-14, Registration cost for the 2017 event is $135. For information and registration materials, visit superiorfaithumc.org. For more information, contact Pastor Wiley Gladney at revgladney@gmail.com. Note to parents. If your middle schooler or high schooler would like to attend, there are funds available. Trinity will pay $100 for each person who wants to go. Pastor Wiley is leading the group. Wildfire! is Meaningful - Youth Mission and Ministry provides what all churches wish to offer their youth a hands-on mission experience that makes a real difference in the lives of real people. We want to help spread the love of God like wildfire! Wildfire! is Affordable - is special because it offers a powerful and meaningful Wesleyan-based mission experience but at a low cost. Wildfire! is Mission and Community Minded - is a week of mission work. Each day the group will begin with worship. Then, it will break into small groups to do mission work throughout the Superior, Wisconsin area. Each evening the groups will go out to have a fun outing. All this gives time for youth to bond, work, and create friendships together all while growing deeper spiritually. Wildfire! is Specialized for Growth - Youth Mission and Ministry offers separate yet common experiences for both Middle schoolers and High schoolers. We try to pair youth of similar age for mission activities, but also have time to mix with all the youth during the general activities. This allows youth groups to have a common mission experience and still provides time for youth to work with other youth their own age. 5

Memorial Ministry June Memorial Ministry Corner Morgan Goodyear Receives 2017 Trinity Scholarship Memorial Ministry is pleased to announce that Morgan Goodyear has been awarded a $500 higher education 2017 scholarship. Morgan, a June 2017 Richland Center High School (RCHS) graduate, will be attending Southwest Wisconsin Technical College (SWTC) in August 2017 within the Nursing/Associate Degree program. Morgan will be continuing her nursing education, as she completed her Certified Nursing Assistant training from SWTC in June 2016 and is currently employed at Schmitt Woodland Hills. Morgan has been involved in band & choir while attending RCHS, as well as Dance Elite and the Career Education Cooperative. Memorial Ministry Chair Paul Murphey reports, While a three-week Schmitt Woodland Hills resident myself in August 2016, I witnessed Morgan s nursing ability up close & personal! She has a rare gift for geriatric care, and I am very pleased that she has decided to continue her nursing education. I am even more pleased that Trinity has so many supportive members, friends, & families that allow us to continue our scholarship program so that we can assist Morgan with her financial obligations. When schedules can be coordinated, Trinity will recognize, during a designated Sunday service, not only Morgan s scholarship but also her high school graduation. The Trinity UMC scholarship is partially funded in memory of Wayne Braithwaite, Jerry Cooper, Nancy Edwards, Hilda Heidenreich, Eloise Herbeck, Roger Jewell, James & Lucille Johnston, Ralph & Helen Monteith, and Eleanor Strang. Congratulations, Morgan! As you enter this next chapter of your life, our prayer to you comes from Proverbs 18:15: The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out. (NIV) 6 Continued >

Memorial Ministry Continued All Saints Day 2016 Thank You. A huge thank you to the many people behind the scenes that enabled us to have a moving All Saints Day 2016 service on Sunday, May 7, 2017: Pastor Wiley, Pat Leonard, Bill Twining, Jennifer Hall, Louise Murphey, Teige Perkins, Jerry Bower, Russ Shannon, Melissa & Talena Sprecher, Claudia Berres, Chloe Wise, Memorial Ministry members, and all who attended. The generous coffee hour donations of $51.70 will be added to our Wish List fund. God willing, we will be back on schedule this fall with our 2017 All Saints Day service scheduled for Sunday, November 5, Paul Murphey, Memorial Ministry Chair Table Sales Last Call. We are ready to make the last push to sell our remaining old banquet tables. We have 14 tables left for sale (13) 8 ft. x 30 $30/table and (1) 7.11 ft. x 36 $40/table. Print ads will be placed in local publications for these tables. If you or someone you know is interested in checking out the remaining inventory, please call the church office at and leave a name and phone number for contact. We are clearing basement space for our eventual purchase of new Schmitt Hall folding chairs. Church Membership Notes Thank you very much for all able to participate in the Peace/Trinity pictorial directory. An update for the traditional Trinity paper directory is as follows: Numerous Trinity directories floating around have been edited, revised, & updated so that we can all work from one directory. Pat Leonard is hard at work inserting names into our new Church Windows membership software. Pastor Wiley & Paul Murphey are researching membership category definitions and at work identifying directory names by membership category. Membership categories will only appear within the software roster and not within the public paper directory. This method is being used for end-of-the-year membership reports. The eventual paper directory is being redesigned; stay tuned for its eventual release. All questions or updates regarding Trinity membership should be directed to the church office at or trinityumc@mwt.net. - - Paul Murphey, Trinity Membership Secretary 7

Committee Notes MAY 2017 COMMITTEE NOTES By Jerry Bower TRUSTEES: Russ Shannon opened our meeting with a pray of thanks and for guidance. The Minutes of our 3 April 2017 meeting were unanimously approved. FINANCIAL REPORTS: As usual, our investments followed the market. All were up a bit. John Storer finally got the Lincoln annuity funds transferred into our Capital Improvement account. It took several resolutions to finally satisfy all the rules and get the money moved! PARSONAGE REPORT: John indicated that we need to file an annual report with the Conference concerning the condition of our parsonage, even though it is not occupied by a pastor. The report will be filed. The chimney repairs and servicing the furnace are again postponed, to await better weather. Strang s has been contracted to do this work. The Creasey s have rolled the lawn and report that it needs some additional attention. John will contact Doug Tyler to see if he could take care of this. Some of the windows in the breezeway have broken due to shifting caused by freezing and thawing. Dr. Alexander has agreed to pay for the repairs. She will notify the Trustees when a replacement is needed. THE CHURCH: The ceiling light bulbs in the altar area need to be replaced. Dick & Barb Marshall have agreed to pay for the LED bulbs. Only one light is currently burned out, but we want to replace all of the bulbs at one time, as replacement involves getting into the attic above the sanctuary and being very careful! John has contacted Errol Wilson about a couple of roof leakage problems. Wallace Electric submitted an estimate of $ to install a dusk to dawn light on the southeast corner of the church, so that it will illuminate the parking lot. A go-ahead was given. We discussed the unevenness of the short sidewalk at the east end of the church and the depressions/sink holes in the parking lot. We will investigate repairing the sidewalk with epoxy. Jim Weber volunteered to get some blacktop from the County garage and fill the sink holes. Thanks, Jim!! We agreed to schedule a cleaning of the kitchen grease trap each January, to avoid the near disaster we had this February. REPORTS: Jerry reported that the new sound mixer has been installed and that the sound system is working well. He also reported his work on the Carl Barnes Trust. Trinity, unfortunately, does not have a complete copy of the trust agreement. Jerry has learned that trusts are not required to be registered with the County. Jerry will continue to investigate. NEXT MEETING: JUNE 5, 2017, AT 6:00 IN CHURCH LIBRARY. FINANCE COMMITTEE: Finance did not meet in May, but I can report that all our bills are current. NEXT MEETING: JUNE 7, 2017, AT 7:00PM IN CHURCH LIBRARY. 9 Continued >

Committee Notes Continued.. CHURCH COUNCIL: Russ opened our meeting with a prayer of thanks and for guidance. There were no Minutes to approve, as the Council had been without a secretary. However, Pat Leonard was present to take Minutes, so this should not happen again. OLD BUSINESS: Two announcements: Please remember to attend the ice cream social on Wednesday, 21 June. The Missions Committee is sponsoring this event; the net proceeds will be added to the Camp Fund. June 19 th is Learning Day at Annual Conference. Pastor Wiley has encouraged us to attend the Accountable Leadership for Churches session. It will describe a different committee structure for churches, designed to reduce the number of meetings. More next month. NEW BUSINESS: Pastor Wiley has requested that we study Local Church Potential, according to paragraph 213 of the Book of Discipline. We agreed to do this, but suggest that the study is not started until the Fall. We also supported hosting a joint Trinity/Peace worship service, to be followed by a picnic. We recommend that the service be held at Trinity, rather than in Krouskop Park, to encourage attendance by those who have difficulty walking on uneven ground. It s also convenient in the event the weather does not cooperate. Again, there will be more to report in June. We decided that we should follow tradition and not schedule Council meetings for July and August. Of course, if a serious issue arises, we will meet. We briefly discussed the Youth Program. Pastor Wiley desires, starting in the Fall, to meet with the youth once a month. The youth have expressed an interest in doing this. Finally, Paul Murphey reported that Morgan Goodyear is Trinity s $ scholarship recipient for the academic year. Please read the details about Morgan elsewhere in this issue of the Chimes. NEXT MEETING: JUNE 19, 2O17 AT 7:00PM IN CHURCH LIBRARY. Last Word CHECK IT OUT!!
