We re using a wellknown series by Bishop Robert Barron, Catholicism, which came out in One week, we watch a 50-minute film, the following week, we talk about our learnings. An outline of the topic with some reflection questions is handed out after each film. It would be great to have parents whose kids are in faith formation at that time join us. But I do know that for some, it s an hour of peace and quiet they can enjoy with one another, even if it s doing the grocery shopping together! While we get the bang for the buck by taking in each session, feel free and welcome to come and go from this Sunday school as time and need for a minute s peace allow! We meet in Newman Hall, 9:50 10:50 AM. My choice of Catholicism is based on a need we always have to be rooted in the basics of our faith. We re a Church because Gospel living isn t simply a personal task. It s clear from the Gospel that continuing the work of redemption is much more than memorizing a catechism. It s becoming a person whose life makes a difference in every world we live in families, friendships, neighborhoods, and work. Every day our lives with others in these worlds bring us challenges and decisions. What are the standards we use in meeting those challenges and making those decisions? There s a lot out there in life that competes for our loyalty. One of the points made in the film we ll be seeing in AFF this Sunday is Jesus question to his disciples, Who do people say that I am? He doesn t ask what people think about what he s saying or how he says it. It s about him, personally. It s a reminder that Christian faith is less about loyalty to dogma and doctrine than it s about loyalty to a person. And, the implications of that personal loyalty in the kind of person others in our lives experience. Loyalty to a set of ideas or a point of view is powerful. But more so is loyalty to a person. It puts ideas and points of view in a unique perspective as we see life through the lens of that loyalty. I ve found Catholicism worthwhile because, while it focuses on the life of the Church, it makes clear that Jesus life is always at work or should always be making the experience of Jesus as real in our world today as it was real for the folks who followed him 20 centuries ago. Catholicism is also worthwhile because it emphasizes that nothing in creation should be beyond our concern as a people, a Church. As Saint Bonaventure said in the 13th century, everything bears the imprint of God, an imprint that has a message and a challenge. Our faith formation helps us to recognize that imprint in our relationships, our work, our research, our study, and our service. So, I hope that this year s Adult Sunday School will help us see the evidence of God s presence and what a difference it can make! Fr. Dan Taizé Prayer We grow in solitude, and we grow even more when that solitude takes place in community. Why? Because community helps us realize that we aren t alone in life s struggles. How can we experience both? Attend Taizé prayer on Thursday, September 28, at 10:00 AM or 7: 00 PM, where solitude and community meet. October Work Forward Workshop The Work Forward workshop being offered here at Saint Andrew on October 2, 3, & 4 will enable jobseekers to improve their approach to finding a job. With experienced coaching in this group setting, former participants have attested to gaining confidence, learning effective ways to get noticed, and improving all aspects of their job search. Contact Sandy Kluck with questions or to register at klucks@outlook.com or This workshop is free, but registration is required. 3 Lord of All Hopefulness Jamie Dean The opening hymn we sing this weekend, Lord of All Hopefulness, is considered an all-day hymn text, dealing with the whole day from morning to evening, and for that reason it sets up the Gospel reading. Displaying a consistent literary structure, the four stanzas begin by addressing God in terms of his attributes and then ask for specific blessings for morning, noon, evening, and night. The text can also serve as a metaphor for a lifetime of faith. The words were written by Joyce Torrens-Graham (b. London, England, 1901; d. New York, NY, 1953). During World War II she moved with her children to New York City and remained there until her death. In England she is best known for her novel Mrs. Miniver, which consists of sketches of British family life before World War II. The music we sing with this hymn is SLANE, an old Irish folk tune that became a hymn tune when it was arranged by David Evans and set to the Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision, published in SLANE is named for a hill in County Meath, Ireland, where St. Patrick s lighting of an Easter fire an act of defiance against the pagan king Loegaire (fifth century) led to his unlimited freedom to preach the Gospel in Ireland. Social Justice Bob Fennell rsfennell43@gmail.com This weekend our tithe is going to the Bread for the World Institute, the research and educational partner of Bread for the World. Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation s decisionmakers to end hunger at home and abroad. Members write personal letters and s and meet with our members of Congress. Working through churches, campuses, and other organizations, it engages more people in advocacy to recommend improved policies and programs. For more information, go to Knights of Columbus PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Knights of Columbus will be offering their outstanding pancake breakfast Sunday, October 8, between the 8:30 AM and 11:15 AM Masses. 4 Our Parish Tithe: What It Is and How You Can Help READ MORE: ORGANIZATIONS WE SUPPORT Not Your Neighbor s Tithe Saint Andrew s Tithe is Communal You may have friends in other Christian denominations or know Catholics who talk about including a practice of tithing in their faith lives. Typically, this refers to donating 10% of one s income to the church or to charitable organizations, and a good many religious people do so throughout their lives. This is referred to as giving of one s first fruits in service of God s will. Perhaps you practice tithing in your own life. Here at Saint Andrew, in addition to this private tithing practiced by individuals, we offer a tithe as a community. Perhaps you have noticed each week in the bulletin seeing a short article detailing where the week s tithe is going and wondered what it s all about. Perhaps, like some parishioners, when you were new to the parish you weren t sure what this meant and looked around for a second collection or a box in which to donate, and never found one. If that s the case, here s an overview of what our community tithe is and how it works. Our Practice Each week, the Parish of Saint Andrew allocates a certain portion of its annual budget as a tithe in support of local, national and international works toward charity, justice and the common good. The tithe is 5% of donations to the Sunday offertory from the previous year and excludes envelopes for second collections, Christmas envelopes, Easter envelopes, and other special collections. Tithes are given to groups working in the areas of direct service (charity, justice and the common good), as well as education and advocacy (speaking and/or organizing on behalf of social justice issues). To Participate Beyond contributing to the weekly offertory, you need do nothing special in order to participate in our communal tithe. The Social Justice and Outreach Committee manages the tithe, identifies organizations to receive it, and keeps up to date with disbursement of funds. The SJOC recently conducted a thorough survey of all tithe recipients to be sure all of their information was up to date. Along the sides of this insert, you can see some of the organizations which receive tithes. If you would like to make a tithe request for an organization, please fill out the form on the parish website. Why We Do It Tithing as a parish enables us to enact our faith together. As Catholics, we believe we are responsible for our neighbors. By giving to those who serve, we walk our talk. 5 Let the Tithe Inspire Action We give as a community. Can you help as an individual or family? ORGANIZATIONS WE SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS WE SUPPORT Father Dan occasionally is known to ask, If Saint Andrew went away would the community notice? He challenges us regularly to enact our faith by going out into the community to live what we believe by helping others and working for justice. He says that the instinct to circle the wagons when things get rough, banding together to protect our own, is contrary to Catholic teaching, and that instead of closing ourselves off, we need to go out and work. The parish tithe program is one way in which we go out and work. During the fiscal year, Saint Andrew donated $21,150 to local community service organizations and $7,200 to national and international organizations through our tithe program. That influx of money helps to sustain organizations doing the work of caring for our neighbors, whether through charitable relief, education, or advocacy for change. But money, while a critical need, is just one piece of the puzzle. Many in our parish serve organizations in our community, as professionals and as volunteers. This week, the SJOC will be conducting a survey at Mass to generate a list of all the organizations to which our parishioners give their service. We would like to know what people are doing to make Saint Andrew a community that would be missed if it went away. Whether people are serving through their paid employment or as volunteers, we would like to know all the different way to help. Once this list is compiled, the SJOC will share it with the rest of the parish for two reasons. First, we want to celebrate all the ways we make a difference in this community. Second, we want to highlight groups people could serve. When the list comes out, we hope that parishioners will read it and prayerfully listen for that little voice calling in the back of your mind, that little nudge that maybe a particular organization could benefit from the work of your hands, the treasure you can share, or the voice that you can raise. Thanks for participating in the survey, and thanks for all you do to make our world a place reflective of the Gospel s call to serve. Please rest assured that filling out a survey will not commit you to anything or put you on any mailing lists you don t want to be on. This is a fact-finding mission, and an invitation. We hope you ll participate! Parishioners are also invited to join in working on the SJOC s upcoming activities and to help us plan more. From planning parish education and advocacy workshops, to helping to organize our annual Giving Tree Project, to joining with others to study, reflect upon, and discuss a new book by a Jesuit priest who writes about how the Catholic Church can lovingly embrace the LGBT community, you are welcome and wanted on the SJOC and at all of our activities. This invitation includes college students, our youth, individuals, and families. In short, all are welcome.
