3 Spirital Notes: Lke tells s that the disciples were all in one place on Pentecost. Their contined presence in Jersalem is in obedience to Jess' command to wait in the holy city ntil they receive the Holy Spirit. In Hebrew, the word for wind rah is also the word for spirit and breath." It was God s rah that hovered over the waters of creation and was breathed into Adam. God s Spirit comes to rest on the disciples, and they are filled with the Holy Spirit ; they begin speaking in different tonges so that their message is heard by the Pentecost pilgrims in Jersalem, devot Jews from every nation nder heaven." Pal tells s that it is only by the Holy Spirit that we can proclaim the Lordship of Jess; that is God s Spirit at work in s. The gifts of the Spirit are many and prodce different frits, bt they come from the same God. Cyril of Jersalem compares the Spirit to the rain: the same rain falls on different plants, bt the flowers they prodce depend on their own identity, whether lily or rose or violet or hyacinth. Each of s is called to do or part with what we have been given for the good of others. Jess' Easter evening appearance to the apostles in today s Gospel is nexpected. They are hiding behind locked doors for fear of the Jews bt he came and stood in their midst." Showing them his hands and his side confirms his identity as the one who was crcified and had his side pierced. Their response is to rejoice. He now gives them the Holy Spirit promised at the Last Spper. For or evangelist, Easter inagrates the era of the Spirit-led chrch. For reflection: Is my experience of God s Spirit more like a strong wind or a gentle whisper? How have I experienced God s Spirit in the lives of others? Flowers in front of the Holy Family are in loving memory of Todd and Bob Wagner, from their family. Please keep in yor prayers, Richard Nadalin, Sr. age 93, who died on Tesday, May 8, Eternal rest grant nto him, O Lord, and let perpetal light shine pon him. Richard is the grandfather of Matt Nadalin, St. Joseph Director of Msic. Please keep Matt and his entire family, also in yor prayers. Lawn chairs are welcome if needed! Disciples as Stewards "As each one has received a gift, se it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10) Let s begin with being a disciple a follower of or Lord Jess Christ. As members of the Chrch, Jess calls s to be disciples. This has astonishing implications: Matre disciples make a conscios decision to follow Jess, no matter what the cost. Christian disciples experience conversion life shaping changes of mind and heart and commit their very selves to the Lord. Christian stewards respond in a particlar way to the call to be a disciple. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold or nderstanding of or lives and the way in which we live. Jess disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and sorce of all things. We are gratefl for the gifts we have received and are eager to se them to show or love for God and for one another. We look to the life and teaching of Jess for gidance in living as Christian stewards. BISHOP'S 2018 ANNUAL APPEAL Sharing his Love, Encoraging Hope The theme of the 2018 Bishop s Annal Appeal inspires s, as people of Faith to share the love that God has for s, which can often bring hope to those who might not have felt His love. 7 What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the trest of gides for hman life? ~Saint Benedict, from the Rle of Saint Benedict (73:3) Mary, who was empty of all egotism, free from all sin, was a pre as the glass of a very clean window that has no other fnction than to admit the light of the sn. If we rejoice in that light, we implicitly praise the cleanness of the window. And of corse it might be arged that in sch case we might well forget the window altogether. This is tre. And yet the Son of God, in emptying Himself of His majestic power, having become a child, abandoning Himself in complete dependence to the loving care of a hman Mother, in a certain sense draws or attention once again to her. ~FATHER THOMAS MERTON, OCSO Monday, May 21 ~ Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Chrch Holy Gospel: John 19:25-34 Standing by the cross of Jess were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jess saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, yor son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, yor mother." And from that hor the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the Scriptre might be flfilled, Jess said, "I thirst." There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they pt a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and pt it p to his moth. When Jess had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crcified with Jess. Bt when they came to Jess and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, bt one soldier thrst his lance into his side, and immediately Blood and water flowed ot. (From the Decree on the Celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Chrch.) Meditation: The joyos veneration given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Chrch, in light of reflection on the mystery of Christ and on his natre, cannot ignore the figre of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Chrch. In some ways this was already present in the mind of the Chrch from the premonitory words of Saint Agstine and Saint Leo the Great. In fact the former says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, becase with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithfl in to the Chrch, while the latter says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, ths indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Chrch. These considerations derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate nion in the work of the Redeemer, which clminated at the hor of the cross. Indeed, the Mother standing beneath the cross (cf. Jn 19:25), accepted her Son s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daghters to be reborn nto life eternal. She ths became the tender Mother of the Chrch which Christ begot on the cross handing on the Spirit. Christ, in trn, in the beloved disciple, chose all disciples as ministers of his love towards his Mother, entrsting her to them so that they might welcome her with filial affection. Prayer: O God, Father of mercies, whose Only Begotten Son, as he hng pon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, his Mother, to be or Mother also, grant, we pray, that with her loving help yor Chrch may be more fritfl day by day and, exlting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the peoples. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Contemplation: Have yo ever contemplated the role of Mary in God s plan for or salvation? In Mary is perfectly realized God's whole creative and redemptive plan. That is why she is said to be for s a light of

8 trth and a pattern of life for the Chrch and her people. That is why her spirital beaty incldes in itself all the beaty which we see here and there, in partial and incomplete form in the niverse. In her is all the beaty of the world, transfigred and elevated to a level beyond or comprehension. And yet since that perfection was reached by the flfillment of her obedience to God and God s plan for or salvation of which we, too, are called to adhere to we cannot help bt see that she is, like orselves, a hman creatre whose littleness has been glorified in the light of Christ and who has been saved from the power of darkness and evil by the grace of the Cross of Christ. Tesday, May 22 ~ Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Saint Rita of Cascia, Religios Holy Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 Jess and his disciples left from there and began a jorney throgh Galilee, bt he did not wish anyone to know abot it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise. Bt they did not nderstand the saying, and they were afraid to qestion him. They came to Capernam and, once inside the hose, he began to ask them, What were yo arging abot on the way? Bt they remained silent. For they had been discssing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and ptting his arms arond it, he said to them, Whoever receives one child sch as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me bt the One who sent me. Meditation: Jess made a dramatic gestre by embracing a child to show his disciples who really is the greatest in the kingdom of God. What can a little child possibly teach s abot greatness? Children in the ancient world had no rights, position, or privileges of their own. They were socially at the "bottom of the rng" and at the service of their parents, mch like the hosehold staff and domestic servants. What is the significance of Jess' gestre? Jess elevated a little child in the presence of his disciples by placing the child in a privileged position of honor. It is cstomary, even today, to seat the gest of honor at the right side of the host. Who is the greatest in God's kingdom? The one who is hmble and lowly of heart who instead of asserting their rights willingly empty themselves of pride and self-seeking glory by taking the lowly position of a servant or child. Prayer: Bestow on s, we pray, O Lord, the wisdom and strength of the Cross, with which yo were pleased to endow Saint Rita, so that, sffering in every triblation with Christ, we may participate ever more deeply in his Paschal Mystery. Who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Have yo ever given any thoght as to whose glory do yo seek? There can be no share in God's glory withot the cross. When Jess prophesied his own betrayal and crcifixion, it did not make any sense to his disciples becase it did not fit their nderstanding of what the Messiah came to do. And they were afraid to ask frther qestions! Like a person who might receive a bad verdict from the doctor and then refse to ask frther qestions, they, too, didn't want to know any more. How often do we reject what we do not wish to see? We have heard the good news of God's word and we know the conseqences of accepting it or rejecting it. Bt do we give it or fll allegiance and mold or lives according to it? Ask the Lord to fill yo with his Holy Spirit and to inspire within yo a reverence for his word and a readiness to obey it. Wednesday, May 23 ~ Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Mark 9:38-40 John said to Jess, Teacher, we saw someone driving ot demons in yor name, and we tried to prevent him becase he does not follow s. Jess replied, Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against s is for s. Meditation: Are we not like the disciples when we get pset and jealos becase someone else has taken or place or taken the spotlight away from s? Envy and jealosy, its conterpart, are sinfl becase they lead s to sorrow over what shold make s rejoice namely, or neighbor's good. The reason we may be sad or feel discontent over one another's good fortne or excellence is the fear of losing or own vale and excellence or being replaced by a rival. Envy is contrary to love. Both the object of love and the object of envy is or neighbor's good, bt by contrary movements, since love rejoices in or neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it. How can we overcome envy and jealosy? With the love that God pts into or hearts throgh the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). This love seeks the highest good of or neighbor.

9 Prayer: Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, always pondering spirital things, we may carry ot in both word and deed that which is pleasing to yo. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Do yo rejoice in the good that others do, especially when they seem to otshine yo? Jess reprimands his disciples for their jealosy and intolerance towards others. Jess had given his disciples power and athority to heal the sick and to cast ot evil spirits from tormented individals. Bt the disciples became pset when they met someone who was not associated with them doing a good deed and acting with Jess' athority and power. The apostles even tried to prevent the man to stop speaking in the name of Jess "becase he does not follow s." Jess' reply is filled with wisdom: "There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me." Whenever someone chooses to act for good in order to overcome evil that person brings glory to God. Thrsday, May 24 ~ Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians Holy Gospel: Mark 9:41-50 Jess said to his disciples: Anyone who gives yo a cp of water to drink becase yo belong to Christ, amen, I say to yo, will srely not lose his reward. Whoever cases one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it wold be better for him if a great millstone were pt arond his neck and he were thrown into the sea. If yor hand cases yo to sin, ct it off. It is better for yo to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the nqenchable fire. And if yor foot cases yo to sin, ct if off. It is better for yo to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. And if yor eye cases yo to sin, plck it ot. Better for yo to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not qenched. Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, bt if salt becomes insipid, with what will yo restore its flavor? Keep salt in yorselves and yo will have peace with one another. Meditation: Jess set before his disciples the one spreme goal in life that is worth any sacrifice, and that goal is God himself and his will for or lives which leads to everlasting peace and happiness. Jst as a doctor might remove a limb or some part of the body in order to preserve the life of the whole body, so we mst be ready to part with anything that cases s to sin and which leads to spirital death. Jess warns his disciples of the terrible responsibility that they mst set no stmbling block in the way of another, that is, not give offense or bad example that might lead another to sin. The Greek word for temptation (scandalon) is exactly the same as the English word scandal. The original meaning of scandal is a trap or a stmbling block which cases one to trip and fall. The Jews held that it was an nforgivable sin to teach another to sin. If we teach another to sin, he in trn may teach still another, ntil a train of sin is set in motion with no foreseeable end. The yong in faith are especially vlnerable to the bad example of those who shold be passing on the faith. In this permissive, politically correct society in which we live, are yo setting a good example a Christ-like example for others to follow, especially the yong? Prayer: O God, Yo chose the glorios Virgin Mary to be or mother and the help of all Christians; grant that throgh her prayers, strengthen yor Chrch, so that she wold accept all trials patiently, and overcome all obstacles throgh steadfast love, and in so doing, she wold cold manifest the trth of Jess Christ to the world. We ask this throgh Christ or Lord, Yor Son who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. Prayer to Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians: Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, how sweet it is to come to yor feet imploring yor perpetal help. If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children, how can yo, the most loving of all mothers forget me? Grant then to me, I implore yo, yor perpetal help in all my necessities, in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations. I ask for yor nceasing help for all who are now sffering. Help the weak, cre the sick, convert sinners. Grant throgh yor intercessions many vocations to the religios life. Obtain for s, O Mary, Help of Christians, that having invoked yo on earth we may love and eternally thank yo in heaven. Contemplation: Saint Gregory of Nyssa, a Father of the Chrch, once wrote: God never asks his servants to do what is impossible. The love and goodness of his Godhead is revealed as richly available. It is pored ot like water pon all. God frnished to each person according to his will the ability to do something good. None of those seeking to be saved will be lacking in this ability, given by the one who said: whoever gives yo a cp of water to drink becase yo bear the name of Christ, will by no means

10 lose his reward. Ask the Holy Spirit to transform yor heart by the fire of his love that yo may wholly desire what is good for yor neighbor. Friday, May 25 ~ Seventh Week in Ordinary Time Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest and Doctor of the Chrch; Saint Gregory VII, Pope; Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, Virgin Holy Gospel: Mark 10:1-12 Jess came into the district of Jdea and across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered arond him and, as was his cstom, he again taght them. The Pharisees approached him and asked, Is it lawfl for a hsband to divorce his wife? They were testing him. He said to them in reply, What did Moses command yo? They replied, Moses permitted a hsband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her. Bt Jess told them, Becase of the hardness of yor hearts he wrote yo this commandment. Bt from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two bt one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no hman being mst separate. In the hose the disciples again qestioned Jess abot this. He said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adltery against her; and if she divorces her hsband and marries another, she commits adltery. Meditation: Jess explains that Moses permitted divorce as a concession in view of a lost ideal. Jess sets the high ideal of the married state before those who are willing to accept his commands. Jess, likewise sets the high ideal for those who freely renonce marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:11-12). Both marriage and celibacy are calls from God to live a consecrated life, that is to live as married coples or as singles who belong not to themselves bt to God. Despite what we may think, or lives are not or own they belong to God. He gives the grace and power to those who seek to follow his way of holiness in their state of life. Do yo seek the Lord and his grace in yor state of life? Prayer ~ Saint Bede: O God, who bring light to yor Chrch throgh the learning of the Priest Saint Bede, merciflly grant that yor servants may always be enlightened by his wisdom and helped by his merits. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer ~ Saint Gregory VII: Give to yor Chrch, we pray, O Lord, that spirit of fortitde and zeal for jstice which yo made to shine forth in Pope Saint Gregory the Seventh, so that, rejecting evil, she may be free to carry ot in charity whatever is right. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer ~ Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi: O God, lover of virginity, who adorned with heavenly gifts the Virgin Saint Mary Magdalene de'pazzi, setting her on fire with yor love, grant, we pray, that we, who honor her today, may imitate her example of prity and love. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: What is God's intention for yor state in life, whether married or single? Are yo open to God s plan being paramont in yor life verss yor own thoghts and desires for what yo want in this earthly life? Pt yorself in the back seat, and let God take yo where he wants yo to go. By letting God s plan for s be or corse in life, or lives become less complex, more simple, and more joyos becase God takes s where he wants s to go, instead of the other way arond.
