3 Spirital Notes: Ezekiel s words are addressed to the people in exile. While mch of his message concerns divine jdgment against Israel, it also contains a message of hope, as in today s text. The imagery of the topmost branches that will be transplanted on the montain heights of Israel promises a new exods, a retrn to Jersalem, God s holy montain. Once again the people will be lead from captivity to freedom. And it shall become a majestic cedar the birds of every kind dwelling in its shade represent the nations of the world finding a home there. All the trees of the field shall know that God is the Lord. God s spremacy will be made known to the nations of the world. Jess' se of agricltral imagery makes a similar statement abot the kingdom of God. In the first image, the seed wold sprot and grow withot the farmer nderstanding the process. God provides for the growth ntil the grain is ripe. The mstard seed, starting ot as a small seed, becomes the largest of plants and the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. Like the transplanted branch of Isaiah, it provides a place of welcome. Jess' words serve to encorage the disciples as they garantee the growth of the kingdom becase of God s involvement. Pal reminds s today that or time on Earth is a prelde to life in heaven. While we are on Earth we are away from the Lord. This reading, often sed at fnerals, exhorts s to live lives worthy of or Christian calling in anticipation of the day when we go home to the Lord. Knowing that we will appear before the jdgment seat of Christ," Pal calls s to dedicate or lives to the Gospel. For reflection: In what ways have I experienced the growth of faith in my own life? How can I help the chrch become more like the trees of Isaiah and the mstard plant? Please keep in yor prayers, Robert Mosley, age 83, who died on Friday, Jne 1, Eternal rest grant nto him, O Lord, and let perpetal light shine pon him. Please also keep his family in yor prayers. 6 What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the trest of gides for hman life? ~Saint Benedict, from the Rle of Saint Benedict (73:3) Learn to love hmility, for it will cover all yor sins. All sins are replsive before God, bt the most replsive of all is pride of the heart. Do not consider yorself learned and wise; otherwise, all yor efforts will be destroyed, and yor boat will reach the harbor empty. If yo have great athority, do not threaten anyone with death. Know that, according to natre, yo too are ssceptible to death, and that every sol sheds its body as its final garment. ~SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA Monday, Jne 11 ~ Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Barnabas, Apostle Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12 When Jess saw the crowds, he went p the montain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who morn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hnger and thirst for righteosness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the mercifl, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persected for the sake of righteosness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are yo when they inslt yo and persecte yo and tter every kind of evil against yo falsely becase of me. Rejoice and be glad, for yor reward will be great in heaven. Ths they persected the prophets who were before yo. Meditation: The beatitdes which Jess offers s are a sign of contradiction to the world's nderstanding of happiness and joy. How can one possibly find happiness in poverty, hnger, morning, and persection? Poverty of spirit finds ample room and joy in possessing God as the greatest treasre possible. Hnger of the spirit seeks norishment and strength in God's word and Spirit. Sorrow and morning over wasted life and sin leads to joyfl freedom from the brden of gilt and spirital oppression. God reveals to the hmble of heart the tre sorce of abndant life and happiness. Jess promises his disciples that the joys of heaven will more than compensate for the trobles and hardships they can expect in this world. Thomas Aqinas said: No one can live withot joy. That is why a person deprived of spirital joy goes after carnal pleasres. Do yo know the happiness of hngering and thirsting for God alone? Prayer: O God, who decreed that Saint Barnabas, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, shold be set apart to convert the nations, grant that the Gospel of Christ, which he strenosly preached, may be faithflly proclaimed by word and by deed. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: What is the good life? What is the ltimate end or prpose of life? Is it not happiness, which is none other than the complete good, the sm of all goods, leaving nothing more to be desired? Jess addresses this qestion in his sermon on the mont. The word beatitde literally means "happiness" or "blessedness". What is the significance of Jess' beatitdes, and why are they so central to his teaching? The beatitdes respond to the natral desire for happiness that God has placed in every heart. They teach s the final end to which God calls s, namely the coming of God's kingdom (Matt. 4:17), the vision of God (Matt. 5:8; 1 John 2;1), entering into the joy of the Lord (Matt. 25:21-23) and into his rest (Hebrews 4:7-11). Jess' beatitdes also confront s with decisive choices concerning the life we prse here on earth and the se we make of the goods he pts at or disposal. God alone satisfies. Knowing this, do yo seek the highest good, the total good, which is above all else? Tesday, Jne 12 ~ Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jess said to his disciples: Yo are the salt of the earth. Bt if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything bt to be thrown ot and

7 trampled nderfoot. Yo are the light of the world. A city set on a montain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then pt it nder a bshel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the hose. Jst so, yor light mst shine before others, that they may see yor good deeds and glorify yor heavenly Father. Meditation: On many occasions Jess sed ordinary images, sch as salt and light, to convey extraordinary trths. What does salt and light have to teach s abot God and his reign on earth? Salt was a valable commodity in the ancient world. People traded with it, like we trade with gold and stock. Salt also served a very sefl prpose in hot climates before the invention of electricity and refrigeration. Salt not only gave food flavor, it also preserved meat from spoiling. Jess sed the image of salt to describe how his disciples are to live in the world. As salt prifies, preserves, and penetrates, so the disciple mst be as salt in the world of hman society to prify, preserve, and penetrate that society for the kingdom of God and of his righteosness and peace. Jess also sed the image of light and a lamp to frther his illstration. Lamps in the ancient world served a vital fnction, mch like they do today. They enable people to see and work in the dark and to avoid stmbling. The Jewish people also nderstood light as an expression of the inner beaty, trth, and goodness of God. In his light we see light (Psalm 36:9). His word is a lamp that gides or steps (Psalm 119:105). God s grace not only illmines the darkness in or lives, bt it also fills s with spirital light, joy, and peace. Jess sed the image of a lamp to describe how his disciples are to live in the light of his trth and love. Jst as natral light illmines the darkness and enables one to see visally, so the light of Christ shines in the hearts of believers and enables s to see the heavenly reality of God s kingdom. In fact, or mission is to be light-bearers of Christ so that others may see the trth of the gospel and be freed from the blindness of sin and deception. Prayer: O God, from whom all good things come, grant that we, who call on yo in or need, may at yor prompting discern what is right, and by yor gidance do it. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Despite the steps we take to engage in activities ot of the pblic eye in or attempt to keep things secret, Jess reminds s that nothing really ever remains hidden or secret. We can try to hide things from others, from orselves, and foolishly from God God who sees all and knows all. How tempting to sht or eyes from the conseqences of or sinfl ways and bad habits, even when we know what those conseqences are. And how tempting to hide them from others and even from God. Bt, nonetheless, everything is known to God who sees all. There is great freedom and joy for those who live in God s light and who seek this trth. Those who listen to God and heed his voice will receive more from him. Do yo know the joy and freedom of living in God s light? Wednesday, Jne 13 ~ Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Anthony of Pada, Priest and Doctor of the Chrch Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19 Jess said to his disciples: Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish bt to flfill. Amen, I say to yo, ntil heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, ntil all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. Bt whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. Meditation: Jess taght reverence for God s law reverence for God himself, for the Lord s Day, reverence or respect for parents, respect for life, for property, for another person s good name, respect for oneself and for one s neighbor lest wrong or hrtfl desires master s. Reverence and respect for God s commandments teach s the way of love love of God and love of neighbor. What is impossible to men is possible to God and those who have faith in God. God gives s the grace to love as he loves, to forgive as he forgives, to think as he thinks, and to act as he acts. The Lord loves righteosness and hates wickedness. As his followers we mst love his commandments and hate every form of sin. Do yo love the commands of the Lord? Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who gave Saint Anthony of Pada to yor people as an otstanding preacher and an intercessor in their need, grant that, with his assistance, as we follow the teachings of the Christian life, we may know yor help in every trial. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: Have yo ever wondered why people generally tend to view the law of God negatively rather than positively? Jess attitde towards the law of God can be smmed p in the great prayer in Psalm 119: Oh, how I love yor law! It is my meditation all the day. For the people of Israel the law

8 cold refer to the Ten Commandments or to the five Books of Moses the Pentatech which explain the commandments and ordinances of God for his people. The law also referred to the whole teaching or way of life which God gave to his people. The Jews in Jess time also sed it as a description of the oral or scribal law. Needless to say, the scribes added many more things to the law than God intended. That is why Jess often condemned the scribal law. It placed brdens on people which God had not intended. Jess, however, made it very clear that the essence of God s law his commandments and way of life, mst be flfilled. The law of God is trth and when we live according to that trth it prodces the frits of righteosness, holiness, peace, and joy. Thrsday, Jne 14 ~ Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26 Jess said to his disciples: I tell yo, nless yor righteosness srpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, yo will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven. Yo have heard that it was said to yor ancestors, Yo shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to jdgment. Bt I say to yo, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to jdgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, Yo fool, will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if yo bring yor gift to the altar, and there recall that yor brother has anything against yo, leave yor gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with yor brother, and then come and offer yor gift. Settle with yor opponent qickly while on the way to cort with him. Otherwise yor opponent will hand yo over to the jdge, and the jdge will hand yo over to the gard, and yo will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to yo, yo will not be released ntil yo have paid the last penny. Meditation: In these stress-filled and anxios times, are yo ever driven by anger, rage, or revenge? The first person to hate his brother was Cain. God warned Cain: Why are yo angry?...sin in coching at the door; it s desire is for yo, bt yo mst master it (Genesis 4:6-7). Sin doesn t jst happen to s; it first grows as a tiny seed in or heart. Unless it is prooted, by God s grace, it grows like a weed and chokes the vine and all its frit. Jess addressed the isse of keeping the commandments with his disciples. The scribes and Pharisees eqated righteosness with satisfying the otward observance of the law. Jess showed them how short they had come. Jess points to the heart as the seat of desire and choice. Unless evil and forbidden desires are eradicated, the heart will be corrpted. Jess points to forbidden anger with one's brother. This is a selfish anger that broods and is long-lived, that nrses a grdge and keeps wrath warm, and that refses to die. Harboring anger in the heart as well as anger in speech and action are eqally forbidden by God. What, then, is the antidote to anger and rage? Mercy, kindness, and forbearance spring from a heart fll of love and forgiveness. God has forgiven s and he calls s to extend mercy and forgiveness towards those who case s grief and harm. In the cross of Jess we see the spreme example of love and forgiveness and the power of goodness for overcoming evil. Only God s love and grace can set or hearts and minds free from the tyranny of wonded pride and spitefl revenge. Do yo harbor any anger towards another person? And are yo qick to be reconciled when a rptre has been cased in yor relationships? Ask God to set yo free and to fill yor heart and mind with his love and goodness. Pal the Apostle reminds s that God's love has been pored into or hearts throgh the Holy Spirit which has been given to s (Romans 5:5). Throgh the grace and help of the Holy Spirit we can overcome malice with good, hatred with kindness, and injry with pardon. Amen. Contemplation: The following prayer of Saint Esebis is well worth contemplation: May I be no man s enemy, and may I be the friend of that which is eternal and abides. May I never qarrel with those nearest me: and if I do, may I be reconciled qickly. May I love, seek, and attain only that which is good. May I wish for all men s happiness and envy none. May I never rejoice in the ill-fortne of one who has wronged me. When I have done or said what is wrong, may I never wait for the rebke of others, bt always rebke myself ntil I make amends. May I win no victory that harms either me or my opponent. May I reconcile friends who are angry with one another. May I never fail a friend who is in danger. When visiting those in grief may I be able by gentle and healing words to soften their pain. May I respect myself. May I always keep tame that which rages within me. May I accstom myself to be gentle, and never be angry with people becase of circmstances. May I never discss who is wicked and what wicked things he has done, bt know good men and follow in their footsteps.

9 Friday, Jne 15 ~ Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:27-32 Jess said to his disciples: Yo have heard that it was said, Yo shall not commit adltery. Bt I say to yo, everyone who looks at a woman with lst has already committed adltery with her in his heart. If yor right eye cases yo to sin, tear it ot and throw it away. It is better for yo to lose one of yor members than to have yor whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if yor right hand cases yo to sin, ct it off and throw it away. It is better for yo to lose one of yor members than to have yor whole body go into Gehenna. It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife mst give her a bill of divorce. Bt I say to yo, whoever divorces his wife (nless the marriage is nlawfl) cases her to commit adltery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adltery. Meditation: Jess warns s of the terrible responsibility that we mst set no stmbling block in the way of another, that is, not give offense or bad example that might lead another to sin. The yong in faith are especially vlnerable to the bad example of those who shold be passing on the faith. Jess teaches that righteosness involves responding to every sitation in life in a way that flfills God's law, not jst externally bt internally as well. Jess says that evil desires spring from the heart. That is why the sin of adltery mst first be dealt with in the heart, the place not only of the emotions, bt the mind, will, thoght, and intentions as well. God s intention and ideal from the beginning was for man and woman to be indissolbly nited in marriage as one flesh (see Genesis 2:23-24). That ideal is fond in the nbreakable nion of Adam and Eve. They were created for each other and for no one else. They are the pattern and symbol for all who were to come. Moses permitted divorce as a concession in view of a lost ideal (see Mark 10:2-9). Jess sets the high ideal of the married state before those who are willing to accept his commands. Jess gives the grace and power of his Holy Spirit to those who seek to follow his way of holiness in their state of life whether married or single. If we want to live righteosly as God desires for s, then we mst know and nderstand the intention of God's commands for s, and decide in or heart to obey the Lord. Throgh the gift and working of the Holy Spirit, the Lord writes his law on or hearts and gives s his power to live his way of righteosness and holiness. Do yo trst in God s love and allow his Holy Spirit to fill yo with a thirst for holiness and righteosness in every area of yor life? Prayer: O God, from whom all good things come, grant that we, who call on yo in or need, may at yor prompting discern what is right, and by yor gidance do it. Throgh or Lord Jess Christ, yor Son, who lives and reigns with yo in the nity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Contemplation: What does Jess mean when he says plck ot yor eye or ct off yor hand and throw it away if it leads yo to sin? Is he exaggerating here? Jess sed forcefl langage to rge his disciples to choose for life an endring life of joy and happiness with God rather than for death an nending death and total separation from a commnity of love, peace, joy and friendship with God. Jess set before his disciples the one goal in life that is worth any sacrifice and that goal is the conformity of or will with God and what he desires for or well-being and happiness with him. Jst as a doctor might remove some part of the body, sch as a diseased limb, in order to preserve the life of the whole body, so we mst be ready to part with anything that cases s to sin and which inevitably leads to spirital death.
