WEST SAGINAW Greetings from First Christian Church West in Saginaw, Michigan! We have not given an official report to the East District in some time. This is partly due to summertime inactivity, so please forgive us! This past spring we offered our yearly Fish Fry. We usually get a great response from the community, and this year was no exception. Our tiny congregation is what some would call older but all who participate still have great energy, praise God! My husband, Irv Burtt, who is Crystal s maintenance person, suffered a stroke on March 31. He is recovering nicely, but was unable to work at the camp this past season. However, when we took our vacation there a couple of weeks ago, he went down to the beach and worked with Dick Murphy for an afternoon, which was extremely encouraging! We appreciate your ongoing prayers for recovery. We have a Timothy! Kevin Greenwald is set to begin classes at Christian Theological Seminary next week, and we all give our prayers and our support (emotional as well as financial!) to his endeavors there. East District BREEZE September 4, 2012 Volume 6 #10 We have also had a young family attending our worship recently, and last month we dedicated their youngest during morning worship. What a blessing this family is to us! In addition, two of our members celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary, and we were privileged to participate with them in a vow renewal service after worship a couple of weeks ago. Blessings abound! The congregation approved the placement of an ad in the Saginaw Valley State University s Student Planner. This is not simply an ad for worship we pray that we may host the beginning of a new type of community wherein all may speak their minds freely and all may feel that it is a safe place to be. BACKPACK PROJECT- HUGE SUCCESS The MCC Youth Group raised $2,357 enough to donate 109 school backpacks with supplies, 20 scientific calculators and 2 graphing calculators to students who attend after school programs. Global Gathering 18, World Convention of Christian- Churches of Christ-Disciples of Christ World Convention took place in Goiania Brazil, July 25-28, The theme was Sharing the Love that Unites. Michigan was represented by Rev. Brenda Etheridge and Sara Beth. Brenda Etheridge retold the story of Paul's admonition to the divided brothers and sisters of Corinth to address their schisms and be united under Christ. The Bible and Disability Toward Inclusive Communities This year s lecture given by Dr. Amos Yong will focus on our growing awareness as a culture of disability. On Sunday, September 23, we will have the privilege of hearing Amos Yong speak during our service. A special brunch will follow the worship service in keeping with the theme of the Perrry Gresham series this year, The Bible and Disability. Toward Inclusive Christian Communities This brunch will be prepared and served by athletes from Team Troy, Special Olympics. Many of you have supported Special Olympics through one of our many fundraises. FYI The World Council of Churches (WCCC) calls on the churches and congregations around the world to observe an Inter national Dsy of Prayer for Peace on 21 September. The day coincides with the International Day of Peace initiated by the United Nations. The participants are especially invited to pray and act together for a just peace in communities, nations and the world. GOSPEL IN ACTION Come work with Rippling Hope in Detroit Join members of Troy Interfaithh Group for Gospel in Action - Detroit work project from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Saturday, September 8 helping weatherize and make minor repairs on homes of families and neighbors of our Detroit churches. All ages are welcome to participate. Work day begins at Northwestern Christian Church, Ilene, Detroit, with orientation and devotions followed by seven to eight hours at the worksites, including lunch break. Registration cost of $25 includes a lunch, an afternoon snack, building materials and project support. Early arrival is possible on Friday evening with overnight lodging available at Northwestern Christian Church. REGISTRATION Deadline is Sept 5th. Dr. Darwin Collins VP Christian Church Foundation 12 noon 2pm luncheon reception RECIPE OF THE MONTH SHRIMP PASTA SALAD Ingredients 1 pound medium shrimp frozen, cooked, shelled, deveined and tails off (pull them off.) 2 cups medium shell pasta cooked 1 cup frozen peas 4 or more celery stalks chopped small 3 hard boiled eggs chopped fine 1 bunch spring onions or more, chopped small ½ cup mayonnaise or more as needed Cook peas in last 3 minutes of cooking pasta Defrost the shrimp in cold water Drain the pasta and shrimp and let dry. When pasta and shrimp are dry, mix all ingredients, adding the mayonnaise last and add more as needed. Put in a large bowl, cover and chill in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology at Regent University School of Divinity in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and director of their PhD in Renewal Studies program. During the spring term 2012, he is on research leave at the Center for Christian Thought at Biola University in La Mirada, California. His graduate education includes degrees in theology, history, and religious studies from Western Evangelical Seminary and Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, and Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, and an undergraduate degree from Bethany University of the Assemblies of God. He has authored or edited eighteen volumes through Appearing in 2012 are Spirit of Love: A Trinitarian Theology of Grace (Baylor University Press), Pentecostalism and Prosperity: The Socio-Economics of the Global Charismatic Movement (Palgrave Macmillan), and four other books. Big Beaver Road Troy, MI About The Perry Gresham Lectures The Perry Gresham Bible Lectures were launched in the fall of 2010, with the desire to bring to the local congregation and community biblical scholars and theologians of note. The principle behind these lectures is the recognition that we are to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind. This lectureship reflects the ethos of the Disciples of Christ movement, which has always valued the mind and has insisted that not only clergy, but the whole people of God should be educated in the faith. These lectures are named after Dr. Perry Gresham, the second pastor of Central Woodward Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and later served as President of Bethany College, an institution founded by Alexander Campbell to provide educated leaders for church and society. The first two Gresham Lectures were presented by Dr. Ronald Allen, Professor of New Testament and Preaching at Christian Theological Seminary, and Dr. Bruce Epperly, formerly of Lancaster Theological Seminary. In year two CWCC added a one-day Clergy Conference to the lectureship, with Christian Theological Seminary of Indianapolis, a seminary of the Disciples, as cosponsor. This year we are pleased to bring Dr. Amos Yong to Troy to speak to the relati onsh ip of the Bibl e, Disability and the Church. Often the church is unaware of ways in which they can be more welcoming of persons with disability whether in their programming, facilities, and conversation. Dr. Yong, whose younger brother has Down Syndrome, speaks from personal experience and a deep engagement with the Bible, and in this presentation will seek to open our eyes to the way in which the Bible speaks to this issue, so that the church can be a truly welcoming and inclusive as a community of faith.
