1 East District BREEZE May, 2013 Volume 7, Number 5 THINK ON THIS 8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying, 9 Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, 10 do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart. Zech 7:8-10 (ESV) FAMOUS QUOTATION Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them. Daalai Lama FAMOUS POETRY The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. 'Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It becomes The thronèd monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute to awe and majesty Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings, But mercy is above this sceptered sway. It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings. It is an attribute to God himself. And earthly power doth then show likest God s When mercy seasons justice... consider this- That in the course of justice none of us Should see salvation. We do pray for mercy, And that same prayer doth teach us all to render The deeds of mercy. Portia in Merchant of Venice by Wm. Shakespeare GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2013 News & Information The 2013 General Assembly theme, "Lord, Teach Us to Pray," calls us to pray deeply for God's direction, strength, courage, and initiative in mission. It offers the opportunity for praying communities of Disciples to connect with each other as the family of God. Dates: Saturday, July 13 through Wednesday, July 17, Location: Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida Theme: Lord, Teach Us to Pray Scriptural Basis: Luke 11:1-4 Registration Opening Date: July 13 WOMEN'S CORNER Women s Ministries Retreat June 21-23, 2013 Join women from across the Michigan Region for a weekend of inspiration, fellowship and learning at beautiful Crystal Lake.
2 RIPPLING HOPE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS The Michigan Region is blessed that Rippling Hope is returning to Detroit to lead volunteer workers this summer. Robin and Carl Zerweck will be arriving on May 15 and will stay into September. Last year they worked on over 250 homes and already they have 458 homes identified for this year. This means they need lots of workers and donations. The Region has scheduled 6 Saturday workdays for this summer. They are: May 18, June 1, June 8, August 17, August 24 and September 7. Please register before the workday by going to their webpage You will also find a list of needed items and services you could donate. If you can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated. JOURNEY OF FAITH CHRISTIAN CHURCH (formerly Memorial Christian Church) A new church name it s a BIG deal! We will implement the change quickly in some areas. New signage is most important so people know who and where we are. We will keep MCC as a legal name until congregational viability is reasonably established. Please know that if you make a contribution to the church you should continue to make checks out to Memorial Christian. We will make changes in some documents and certainly on business cards and
3 letterhead. We plan to start a major evangelism effort this summer and will need material to distribute to people in our community. As Journey of Faith Christian Church (DOC), we will continue a rich heritage and history of faithfully teaching the Word of God, compassionately serving others, and telling our stories of our encounters with the living Christ. We re a group of people on a journey with Jesus. We don t claim to have it all figured out and recognize that each of us is in a different spot on that journey. From those just exploring Jesus, to those starting to figure out how to talk with Him, to those fully engaged in that pursuit. We hope everyone will join us in building a vibrant and authentic church. Walk with us on (y)our Journey of Faith. Mom 2 Mom Sale Coming June 1st! The Y.E.S. group is planning this event and will need lots of help. We need extra tables, people to set-up and clean up, food donations, people to cook and serve and sell food and beverages, and much more. Please speak with Kellie Knight, Aislyn Glenn, or Tiana Coles to volunteer. This is a BIG event and will help in letting people know we are here. People will come from all around. The money raised will be used for the Equal Start program that provides backpacks to so many children who can t afford them. Journey of Faith will be a happening place on June 1st and we hope you ll take part in some way. Journey of Faith Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1900 Manchester Rd., Ann Arbor MI FYI JUSTICE ISSUE OF THE MONTH The commandment dictates do not steal. Jesus dictates we do everything possible to stamp out hunger. Jean Valjean, the principal character in Victor Hugo s novel, Les Miserables, served prison time for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister and her children during a time of economic depression.
