2 ii THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LOS ANGELES AREA POST OFFICE BOX 6006 PASADENA, CALIFORNIA (626) FAX: (626) MARY ANN SWENSON RESIDENT BISHOP GAIL KENDALL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT REV. GARY M. KEENE EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE BISHOP WES DAVIS SECRETARY To the Leaders of the 2010 Cal-Pac Conference, Greetings! The Good News that we proclaim lives in tension with the troubling news of our times: earthquakes, volcanoes, poverty, and loneliness around the world. We gathered once again at the University of Redlands for our 26 th Annual Session to discern how to more perfectly be the Church in the world for such a time as this. Because we are disciples in the Wesleyan tradition, that perfection is always ahead of us; but this year we have taken some major steps forward: First, we continued our annual exploration of the Four Areas of Focus of the United Methodist Church; this year, lifting up New Ministries for New People in New Places. I was delighted to welcome the Reverend Eun Pa Hong as our preacher, who is a generous and inspiring host to many of us on our visits to the Methodist Church in Korea where he leads a congregation of thousands of disciples. With his leadership, we began each day in a time of traditional early morning prayer (see #446 in our Book of Worship). This was a highlight for many of us. Second, our Wesley Circles this year became Learning Circles as we focused on the creative skills and critical knowledge necessary to form and birth all kinds of new ministries. Topics included Creating a Culture of Radical Welcome, Evangelism That s Effective, Developing Alternative Services, Introducing a New Mission Initiative in Nigeria, Identifying Core Gifts that Give Vitality to One s Church, Effectively Utilizing Technology to Reach the Young, New Church Starts, etc. Next, we continued with our Table Forums. These were an expression of our distinctly Wesleyan heritage of Christian conferencing, a time of face to face sharing, discussion, testing, and holding one another accountable. John Wesley believed this conferencing to be an opening for God s grace to enter in. Our whole Session was an expression of this belief, and these Forums were a specific time for talking about some of the decisions before us as a body, yet without the mantle of voting. Instead, clarity, mutuality, and perhaps, sometimes, consensus was the fruit of this time together. To be an effective church to be the post-resurrection Body of Christ in the world today demands the best of who we are: and we are United Methodists, a connectional people capable of doing far more together than we can apart. Our time together was overflowing with potential; I believe that God blessed our time together, as we opened both our hearts and our minds to one another and the Holy Spirit. In the end, you are the conference, and what you do will shape our common witness in the world today. I am grateful that we are in ministry together, and enjoyed this time of worship, fellowship, learning, and work. Shalom,

3 iii BIOGRAPHY OF BISHOP SWENSON Mary Ann Swenson was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and raised in Jackson, Mississippi where she was active at Capitol Street Methodist Church. She majored in religion at Millsaps College in Jackson, and graduated in In 1968 she married Jeff Swenson of Elma, Washington and they soon moved to Claremont, California where she enrolled in the School of Theology. Rev. Swenson was ordained deacon in 1973 and elder in 1976 having consequently earned her Doctor of Ministry degree from the School in Her local pastoral ministry included Claremont U.M.C., California; Orchards U.M.C., Vancouver, Washington; and First United Methodist Church, Wenatchee, Washington. In 1983 she was appointed Superintendent of the Puget Sound District of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference. In 1992, Rev. Dr. Mary Ann Swenson was elected to the Episcopacy at the Western Jurisdictional Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was assigned to the Denver Area, and gave leadership there until July of 2000, when she was assigned to the Los Angeles Area, including the California-Pacific Annual Conference and the Korean Mission of the Western Jurisdictional Conference. During that time, she also served as president of the General Council on Finance and Administration of the denomination. In 2008, her assignment to the Los Angeles Area was extended to 2012, and she now serves as president of the church s General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. With her husband Jeff, Bishop Mary Ann maintains an active lifestyle as a cyclist, and commutes locally by city bus: she has said, John Wesley s the world is my parish takes on new meaning when you ride the bus each day. She has become an outspoken leader in the denomination and in her communities, calling for a redefinition of the purpose of the church in a rapidly changing world. Bishop Mary Ann continues to lead the church with passion toward becoming a more inclusive community, filled with grace, compassion and justice, growing in more perfect love of God and neighbor.

4 iv Vision To Be the Cup Overflowing ~ in a spiritually thirsty, physically hurting world, so that all might have life, and have it abundantly. To overflow with Grace: What it looks like: people being disciples to make disciples; people walking the Wesleyan Way in fellowship with others; people creating communities where the least, the last and the lonely may experience God s transforming grace, and are nurtured along their journey of faith, practicing Wesley s Acts of Piety. To overflow with Compassion: What it looks like: communities of believers being the Body of Christ in specific places of ministry, expressing God s transforming compassion through the practice of Wesley s Acts of Mercy. To overflow with Justice: What it looks like: the Body of Christ fulfilling God s prophetic call to speak truth to power on behalf of the powerless, so that grace, compassion and the life abundant may abound for all. John Wesley s essentials: 1. Know God, 2. Preach Christ, and 3. Seek Justice. Acts of Compassion The Wesleyan Way Works of Mercy Acts of Justice Private Public Acts of Devotion Acts of Worship Works of Piety

5 v From The Mission and Ministry of the Church, p.87ff, 2008 Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church: The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by proclaiming the good news of God s grace and by exemplifying Jesus command to love God and neighbor, thus seeking the fulfillment of God s reign and realm in the world. The fulfillment of God s reign and realm in the world is the vision Scripture holds before us. The United Methodist Church affirms that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and the Lord of all. As we make disciples, we respect persons of all religious faiths and we defend religious freedom for all persons. Jesus words in Matthew provide the Church with our mission: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you (28:19-20), and You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.... And you shall love your neighbor as yourself (22:37, 39). Whenever United Methodism has had a clear sense of mission, God has used our Church to save persons, heal relationships, transform social structures, and spread scriptural holiness, thereby changing the world. In order to be truly alive, we embrace Jesus mandate to love God and to love our neighbor and to make disciples of all peoples. Chart orienting the Conference Leadership Team s Five Essential Ministry Teams with the General Conference s Areas of Focus: ESSENTIAL PURPOSE What we are called to do: The purpose of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. ESSENTIAL TEAMS How we as an annual conference fulfill our calling: We form principled Christian leaders (lay and clergy, younger and more diverse,) Leadership Ministries Who form new and revitalized ministries (in new places and for new people,) New Ministries Who engage poverty alongside the poor, and overcome global diseases, Justice Ministries So that the world is transformed. We provide support for this chorus of ministries, Resource Ministries Guided by spiritual and temporal oversight. Ministry of Navigation
