8 Welcome to the 49th Annual Meeting of the Diocese of Ontario A.C.W. at Christ Church Cataraqui, Kingston. I am thankful for your support in giving me the pleasure of attending the National Conference in St. John s, Newfoundland, in October. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and prayer that I was able to share with delegates from across Canada. (see my conference report). We held our 2 nd Diocesan Retreat on Sept. 21 st 22 nd 2015 that was open to all A.C.W. members. We had a few new attendees who enjoyed their time of fellowship and prayer and indicated that they would return. This year it will be held on Sept. 26 th 27 th at Providence Spirituality Centre. The cost is $85, which includes a single room and meals. I encourage all members to attend. It is a good way to meet other A.C.W. members and enjoy their fellowship. I was able to attend all three Regionals in October. All Regional meetings were well attended. The guest speakers chosen for the meetings were very interesting and brought informative topics to the meetings. Thanks to each Regional President and their host churches for making these events successful. I look forward to meeting you again this October. In October, Rev. Joyce Blackburn retired from her position as Chaplain. We will miss her inspirational messages to us, and we thank her for her dedication to our Executive. I would like to introduce our new Chaplain, Rev. Mona Rush, and I look forward to having you meet her. With your support, our Diocesan A.C.W. provides outreach to our communities, our country and the world. We continue to support the New Life Girls Home, Camp Hyanto, P.W.R.D.F., Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Bishop s Discretionary Fund. Our 2015 thank offering went to Doctors Without Borders, Hope Air and Morning Star Mission. Regional President Kathy Morgan and I visited St. John s, Bath, to officially close their A.C.W. group and present them with a certificate of appreciation from the Diocesan A.C.W. It was a pleasure to award A.C.W. pins and certificates to well-deserved members: A.C.W. President s Report Christ Church Cataraqui Vera Mason. 9 National A.C.W. Conference Oct. 1 4, 2015 St. John's, Newfoundland Theme: Leaders of Courage Serving by Faith Last October, I attended an inspiring National Conference in St. John s, Newfoundland. When I arrived on Thursday, Oct. 1 st, I was picked up at the airport with a few other ladies. We were driven to the Lavrock Camp/ Conference Centre. Unfortunately, Primate Fred Hiltz and Rt. Rev. Geoff Peddle, Bishop of Newfoundland and Labrador, were not able to attend our conference. We were fortunate to have Bishop Michael Hawkins, Bishop of Saskatchewan and Chair, Council of the North, with us. On Thursday evening, after dinner we had Eucharist. Since our theme was Leaders of Courage Serving by Faith, we studied women in the Bible who kept alert, stood firm in their faith and were courageous and strong. On Friday, despite the wet and foggy weather, we took an excursion into St. John s. We visited Signal Hill and Petty Harbour. We were entertained in the bus by a lovely singer, Sheila Williams. After a wonderful supper, we were entertained by Merle Vokey, a retired teacher who sang and gave us a history of Newfoundland in a comedic way. We then had our devotions where we reflected on Mary, Mother of Jesus, and sang Come Celebrate the Women. Then we had a wine and cheese party. On Saturday, after morning devotions, we began our business meetings. We had 30 representatives present, four of whom were Vice Presidents and one who was a representative from the Mother s Union. The following items were discussed: If members would like to honour someone, a donation can be made in their name to the Anglican Foundation Trust. In 2017, the National Conference will be open to all Anglican Women. It will be held on June th at Redeemer College in Ancaster Ontario. A committee has been formed headed by Marion Saunders. More information will follow. In 2017, we will be celebrating 50 years of the A.C.W. The Council of the North was discussed and their great needs. We sent them our collection from Sunday s Eucharist. Margaret de Carvalho from the Mother s Union spoke on their project Parents supporting Parents. They work to help parents improve their parenting skills, foster stronger relationships with kids and learn to bring up happy and competent children. They are in need of facilitators to keep program going. Our 2016 Conference will be held Oct th in Langley, British Columbia. Our prayer partner is Caledonia, and Toronto will pray for us. Ecclesiastical Province Meetings followed: Ottawa suggests that we watch the video on YouTube "Spirit of the Arctic. Ontario supports various charities through thank offerings, and all churches are busy providing at the local level. Toronto Parishes are closing through amalgamation. Their Board is made up of very old ladies. The diocese sends $10,000 annually to the Council of the North. Algoma collection from their Annual meeting is split between National and Local; their thank offering goes to a charity selected at the Annual. They have sent books to Tanzania. Huron donated $2,000 to help fix the Cathedral wall and is working on a policy book. After supper, Bishop Hawkins spoke to us regarding the Council of the North. He spoke about the devastating forest fires throughout his Diocese this summer. Many people had to leave their homes. Aboriginal and nonaboriginal firemen worked side by side. He thanked all A.C.Ws for their generous support. That evening we were entertained by a wonderful woman of 85 who did skits. Then all of us who had never visited Newfoundland before were Screeched in. We had lots of great laughs and great memories of our visit. Sunday morning, we had a closing Eucharist led by Archdeacon David Pilling, assisted by Bishop Hawkins. I would like to thank you all for the opportunity to attend this conference. I learnt a lot and was very inspired by the people, their love of life and welcoming nature. Maureen Sills President, Diocese of Ontario A.C.W. 10 A.C.W. Executive Annual Meeting Maureen Sills, our Diocesan President, called the meeting to order and welcomed all present. She noted it had been a very successful day, having registered the highest number of members in recent years. Bishop Oulton had celebrated Eucharist in the morning portion of our day, followed by a presentation from Dr. John Geddes, M.D. from CanAssist African Relief Trust. Greetings from The Catholic Women s League and The Bay of Quinte Conference U.C.W. were offered as well as reflections by both on the work and projects that each groups were involved in. Lisa Russell from our Diocesan Archives spoke to us, giving a brief history of the Archives. She encouraged all of us to send our outdated documents to the Archives for review, reference and storage. Many of these documents are used by historians and research genealogists in their work. All older documents need to be indexed and stored appropriately. This makes for easy retrieval for Lisa with her work and for her volunteers. Carol Fitzpatrick, Manager of Camp Hyanto, spoke about the work of the camp and where the camp is now and what the camp s vision is for the future. The camp Board of Directors has initiated a program where they hope to raise money for the camp via Pre-Authorized givings from members of the Diocese; their hope is that if 1,000 people donate $10 a month, this could ensure the financial stability of the camp. The forms for this approach can be found online. They are in search of a fund raising member for their Board of Directors. Carol said emphatically that the bottom line is the camp needs financial support. As the business portion of our meeting began President Maureen introduced the Diocesan Executive to those present. Chaplain s Report As chaplain from January to October 2015, it was my joy to share devotions at all the monthly executive meetings and to lead the annual retreat September 21-22, 2015 at Providence Spirituality Centre. Nineteen of us shared three chapters of Joan Chittister s In Search of Belief. She has readers renew their understanding of the Apostle s Creed as they live out their baptismal vows each day. The retreatants promised to continue their daily devotions using this stirring testament of our Anglican beliefs. A valuable section of the monthly minutes is devoted to the updating of the prayer list. Each morning or evening Each of the following will receive $ for their use: Bishop s Discretionary Fund Camp Hyanto World: Doctors Without Borders Canada: Hope Air Diocese: Morning Star Mission, Napanee Today s offering is $776.50, and this money will be forwarded to Dr. John Geddes and CanAssist African Relief Trust following a motion by Norma Riley, seconded by Joyce Eggelston, and carried by those present. Another most important ministry is the collection of used postage stamps, which are mailed to Oxfam Canada. In 2015 this mission raised $26,000, which supports projects in East Africa and India. Thank you for your continued collecting. In October, The Reverend Mona Rush accepted The Right Reverend Michael Oulton s appointment to be the new A.C.W. 12 Archives Report Marjorie Keates I am pleased to report that ACW branches continue to hand in minute books, photographs, scrapbooks and other memorabilia for safe storage at the Archives. These are given to Lisa Russell, Diocesan Archival Technician, to catalogue, store and make available for research. Thank you. Policy Committee Our Diocese of Ontario A.C.W. is governed by The By-laws and The Constitution. At last year s annual meeting, we moved to change By-law #2B to increase the number of Members at Large from 3 to 6 (2 members from each of the 3 regions) and Bylaw #5K, that the Members Elizabeth Gibson at Large should be recruited at the Annual and/or Regional Meetings to represent the individual regions). Both these motions were passed. This year, there were no changes in the By-laws and Constitution. If you would like a copy of our policy booklet, please contact your Regional President or myself, Elizabeth Gibson, at Elizabeth Gibson Policy Committee Convenor Marjorie Keates A.C.W. Archives Convenor Synod Council continues in 2015 to work on the business of the Diocese: finance, budget, parish concerns and real estate issues, to name a few. One of the challenges this year was to manage the financial business of Camp Hyanto. Hopefully, with Brenda Hobbs the recommendations of the Task Force, including proportional gifts from the parishes, we can look forward to a brighter future for Camp Hyanto. Synod Council Report the book room can continue to function. The Habitat for Humanity and Good Shepherd/Community Outreach Centre is an exciting project that is expected to be completed by the end of The Outreach Centre can serve as a host community by offering a warm and welcoming place for conversation meetings, Sunday and mid-week Anglican services, community garden, walk in centre for parents and young children and a variety of health services. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we continue, with God s help, to ensure that our Diocese remains dedicated to the work of Christ through the support of our parishioners. A committee was formed to investigate ways to make the Book Room a more viable addition to the diocese. By implementing their recommendations in the coming year, 12 Anglican Church Women Annual Reports for 2015 Kingston, Ontario Brenda Hobbs A.C.W. Synod Council Representative

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to each of you who helped in so many ways to contribute to our success. Your hard work and dedication have allowed you to Elizabeth Gibson cater many meals to various groups, hold fund raising events for your churches and provide support for your local and international community. As well, you have supported the prayer shawl ministry, made Comfort dolls and provided gifts for your seniors. This is a job well done! Leeds & Grenville Region Report 2015 This has been another busy year for Leeds and Grenville ACW ladies. Many churches have seen ministry changes, with ladies and congregations busy with retirement receptions, welcoming new ministers including interim ministries and St. James Kemptville s Victorian Wedding reception for Fr Robert Porter and his wife, Tira. We give thanks for our hardworking ladies who devote so much of their time and energy fundraising for necessary and worthwhile parish expenses, as well as fulfilling contributions to outreach in their communities and beyond. A big thanks goes out to the ladies of St. James Kemptville, who hosted our regional meeting on October 8 th, They prepared a delicious luncheon for 56 ladies from 10 different churches as well as six clergy and four guests. 17 Hastings/Quinte Region Report 2015 We have had a wonderful year within our region. Several of our Parishes have celebrated significant anniversaries and have had many activities to celebrate their special occasions. I have had the distinct Kathryn Morgan pleasure of presenting many A.C.W. awards this year to ladies who have served in their parishes, some for more than 70 years. What a treasured memory for me to see the look of surprise on their faces as their names were called, and the humility with which they accepted these awards. Their service to their Parishes and their calling to do Christ s work here on earth is a true testament to our mission as A.C.W. members. I can only reiterate my message at our annual meeting in Belleville, and it is directed to A.C.W. Presidents: look around you and please, if you have not, take the time to apply for these awards for those deserving individuals while they are able to enjoy and accept them. We are an aging body of workers. Our annual meeting was held at Christ Church in Belleville and what a day of fellowship. There was a great turnout of members and clergy and with Bishop Oulton celebrating the Eucharist service with us in the morning. It truly set the tone for the day. My personal thank you to the Christ Church A.C.W. and their President, Mona Tummon-Lyons, for all the dedication and hard work they focused on the success of this meeting. In June, Maureen Sills and I visited the Parish of St. John s in Bath. It was a bittersweet time, as we presented two A.C.W. awards but also presented a certificate of appreciation to this Parish as it closed its A.C.W. I look forward to the New Year as I write this report and all the activities and fellowship that it holds in store for us. Blessings to all of you. Kathryn Morgan President, Hastings/Quinte Region When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I have not a single bit of talent left and I could say I used everything You gave me. 18 Camp Hyanto Camp Hyanto is working very hard at being its own sustainable Ministry. Thank you for your part in helping us to move forward. We are grateful for the many ways in which the people of this Diocese continue to support us. Many blessings to the ACWs for your assistance with spreading the word about the camp, supporting us financially and helping it to grow. We could not do it without you. Programming: One of the main focuses this year was to develop the Spiritual Coordinator/Chaplain Position at the camp. We were able to hire a theological student from Carol Fitzpatrick Tyndale College in Toronto who was instrumental in the development of themed weeks during the 2015 camping season. This was a welcome and timely addition to the program as well as providing a consistent spiritual presence throughout the summer that was appreciated by the teens and children. Maintenance: Work Bees were well attended this spring. Much work was accomplished and the grounds/buildings are looking more appealing. Co-ordinating projects through one main person has ensured that priorities are being set and that jobs are being undertaken as time and funds permit. Fundraising: This continues to be a priority for the camp. In terms of the PAG program that was launched in March 2015, we currently have the equivalent of 64 people on this program. Highlights for 2015 include: a slight increase in attendance again this year; a new floating water pad for the waterfront; the introduction of bucket drumming; the donation of newer furniture to replace broken pieces; a new refrigerator in the Kitchen; a new altar was built and a new cross was installed at the campfire circle; the Counsellor-in-Training Program was re-introduced to ensure that this group of young people obtained more training and support; and another new promotional video called Beneath the Pines was filmed by Mr. Jake Hawley, which can be viewed on You Tube and our Hyanto Facebook page. How best to move forward is a group decision. This is a Diocesan Ministry; as a result, Diocesan participation is crucial. Both registrations and regular contributions to the camp need to increase to ensure its financial stability. The Board and I invite your continued partnership with us to keep Camp Hyanto a strong and viable ministry for many years to come. Carol Fitzpatrick Camp Hyanto Manager Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. Mother Teresa 18 Anglican Church Women Annual Reports for 2015 Kingston, Ontario
