3 Youth Ministry Corner Did you miss the last Teaching Mass by Father Kurt?! No worries, we have scheduled another one! Do NOT miss out on this opportunity to encounter the Mass like never before! Father Kurt s Teaching Mass April 29th During the 4:00pm Teen Mass Contact: klahera@oloj.org Life Teen will meet 4/22 after the 4pm Mass! Edge will meet 4/18 from 5:00-6:30pm! Bring a Friend! (Being) Catholic Matters David Lins, Director of Faith Formation I don t know about you, but in my view, the world has quickly devolved into a divided land, rife with accusation, anger, and assumption. Are you Catholic? You must be okay with holding back women because Catholics don t let women be priests! Are you pro-life? You must think you can push your beliefs on me! Do you support the second amendment? You must be okay with school shootings! Do you believe genders are real and play a role in who we are? You must be filled with hate because we should just let anyone be whoever they want to be and do whatever they want to do! Have I gotten your blood pressure up yet? Intelligent dialogue between people who disagree is on the edge of extinction. In a stroke of inescapable irony, disagreeing with the popular narrative is no longer tolerated. In Luke 24, Jesus says, Peace be with you. Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have." Then? He asks if there is anything to eat! Basically: Why are you freaking out? I ROSE FROM THE DEAD! You are going to be alright. Now relax. Eat something. The world has constantly contended with evil. From Christians being fed to the lions to Jews being led to the showers. From people being shot in the streets of Tombstone to people being shot in the streets of Chicago. We need to pray and do what we can, but we should also live with confidence in the risen Christ who has given meaning to suffering and has conquered death..and never be afraid to answer the tough questions when people are willing to have a conversation. Did you know the Catholic Faith actually elevates a woman above all the other saints? That pro-life people are trying to protect the child and the mother? That second amendment supporters pray they will never have to use a gun to defend their family against the mentally sick and deranged, but understand their obligation to do so? That people who recognize and celebrate both genders understand God s beautiful creation as explained in Theology of the Body? Questions? Comments? David at dlins@oloj.org Page 3
4 Our Lady of Joy Faith Formation Attention All OLJ Parents Did you know? Children s Faith Formation Classes begin in 1st Grade and are completed in 12th Grade? The Diocese of Phoenix is a restored order diocese? This means that sacraments are prepared for and received in the order they were instituted by Christ: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. 1st graders spend time learning about the love of Christ, Catholic identity, prayers, basic catechism and sacraments in order to get a firm foundation of faith knowledge. Along with weekly faith formation classes, 2nd graders prepare throughout the year for their first reconciliation. Separate from weekly classes, 3rd graders prepare for the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. 4th and 5th graders are continuing their faith journey by solidifying friendships built over the past couple of years during activities, prayer time and discussion inspired by a love of Christ and a willingness to do God s will. 6th 8th graders join EDGE Nights where the Holy Spirit is alive and working hard at keeping the light of Christ burning bright in His children! 9th 12th graders dive deep into their faith through Life Teen under the direction of the Youth Coordinator and Core Team. Children in 3rd grade or higher who have not attended any faith formation classes will begin in an RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) class during the same time as regular classes for their first year of Children s Faith Formation at OLJ.
