2 THANK YOU FROM ST. VINCENT DE PAUL! Our Lady of Joy St. Vincent de Paul Conference thanks all our parishioners for your wonderful support at our recent Thanksgiving Food and Clothing Drive. Through your efforts we collected enough food to provide 35 families three big boxes of foodstuffs, along with a Turkey. There was enough food left over to provide 1,500 pounds to the Foothills Food Bank and a similar amount to be used for the San Carlos Apache tribe. We collected 165 bags of clothing for the homeless to make their lives more bearable during the winter months. You also generously donated $8,946 in cash to help others in need. What marvelous gifts for these recipients at this time of year. God Bless you. 3 Youth Ministry Corner IT S PARTY TIME! This Sunday, December 9 After the 4:00pm Mass 5:15-7:00 pm (Being) Catholic Matters David Lins, Director of Faith Formation This past week, I blew a tire on Pima and Lone Mountain. With a commute totaling about 70 miles each work day, this isn t uncommon and I know what to do. I got off the road as far as possible and removed my spare tire and jack from the trunk. Unfortunately, a crucial part of the jack was missing. I called several coworkers, but I am the first one in each morning, so no one was close. I noticed the time and realized I d be fine. Within thirty minutes, daily Mass would be letting out and Pima is one of only three major routes from the church. Someone was bound to see me and help. Sure enough, several parishioners drove by. No one stopped. All teens are welcome at the Life Teen Christmas Party! You don t have to be registered in Life Teen to take part in the fun! Wear your BEST ugly sweater for a chance to win a gift card! There will be lots of games to play for prizes! Bring your favorite holiday snack to share! klahera@oloj.org Now, I recognize I m a decent-sized dude with a beard who was wearing flannel. I look like I should know how to change a tire. This is why I was giving my best, Help Me! look. Didn t matter. No one stopped. In Phil. 1: 8-11, St. Paul writes, And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. I ve always found it interesting that he asks that our perception grows. We must be people of perception and action. Often, we see someone and we think to ourselves, something about them seems off. Are they sad? Depressed? Angry? Did something happen? Then, we consider saying something. Finally, we dismiss it. Come on! They are probably fine. We pass them by and miss the opportunity by ignoring our own perception. This Advent season, I want to encourage you to follow through. To ask. To reach out. To be Christ s hands and feet. (And to help me next time I m stranded on the road.) Questions? Comments? David at dlins@oloj.org Page 3

He had never been baptized, but when he did decide to become baptized, was elected bishop one week later. He began studying Sacred Scripture and the writings of great religious scholars. He spoke against the Arian heresy and had it mostly eliminated from his diocese. Saint Augustine studied with him, was baptized by him, and was a strong supporter. Saint Ambrose was a strong political and religious figure who used his power to fair and just ends.
