FIRST READING Revelation 7 : After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 34 : 1-8 At 8am and 9am, please join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.30am, please sing the response after the Cantor, then as indicated 1 I will bless the Lord continually: his praise shall be always in my mouth. 2 Let my soul boast of the Lord: the humble shall hear it and rejoice. 3 O praise the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together. 4 For I sought the Lord s help and he answered: and he freed me from all my fears. Response 5 Look towards him and be bright with joy: your faces shall not be ashamed. 6 Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me: and saved me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him: and delivers them in their need. 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: happy are they that hide in him! Response 3

SECOND READING 1 John 3 : See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Matthew 5 : 1-12 At 10.30am, please join in singing the Alleluia Alleluia! Alleluia! Come to me, all you that labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord. Alleluia! Ferial Sarum F The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4

Officiant: The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor Preacher: The Revd Emily Fraser Readers: Rob Till and Canon Kate Drummond Introit Hymn: For all the saints (hymn 1, p. 11) Collection Hymn: Jerusalem the golden (hymn 3, p. 12) Dismissal Hymn: Thanks be to God for his saints (hymn 4, p. 13) Responses: Plainsong Psalm Chant: Plainsong Setting: Evening Service in C Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Anthem: O thou, whose all-redeeming might arr. David Blackwell (b. 1961) O thou whose all-redeeming might crowns every saint in glory bright, on this commemoration day hear us, good Jesu, while we pray. Contending for thy holy name thy servants earned their saintly fame, which pious hearts with praise revere in constant memory year by year To thee, O Christ, our loving King, all glory, praise and thanks we bring; whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. Amen. 5 Earth s fleeting joys they counted naught, for higher, truer joys they sought, and now, with angels round thy throne, unfading treasures are their own. O grant that we, most gracious God, may follow in the steps they trod; and, freed from every stain of sin, as they hath won may also win. Postlude: No. 5 from Six Short Preludes & Postludes, Op. 101 Charles Villiers Stanford ( ): Mr Siegfried Franke, Cathedral Organist. PSALM 33 : 1-9 Sung by the choir 1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous : for it becometh well the just to be thankful. 2 Praise the Lord with harp : sing praises untyo him with the lute, and instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto the Lord a new song : sing praises lustily unto him with a good courage. 4 For the word of the Lord is true : and all his works are faithful. 5 He loveth righteousness and judgement : the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made : and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together, as it were upon an heap : and layeth up the deep, as in a treasure-house. 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord : stand in awe of him, all ye that dwell in the world. 9 For he spake and it was done : he commanded, and it stood fast. FIRST READING Sirach 44 : Let us now sing the praises of famous men, our ancestors in their generations. 2 The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. 3 There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and made a name for themselves by their valour; those who gave counsel because they were intelligent; those who spoke in prophetic oracles; 4 those who led the people by their counsels and by their knowledge of the people s lore; they were wise in their words of instruction; 5 those who composed musical tunes, or put verses in writing; 6 rich men endowed with resources, living peacefully in their homes 7 all these were honoured in their generations, and were the pride of their times. 8 Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise. 9 But of others there is no memory; they have perished as though they had never existed; they have become as though they had never been born, they and their children after them. 10 But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten; 11 their wealth will remain with their descendants, and their inheritance with their children s children. 12 Their descendants stand by the covenants; their children also, for their sake. 13 Their offspring will continue for ever, and their glory will never be blotted out. 14 Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation. 15 The assembly declares their wisdom, and the congregation proclaims their praise. SECOND READING Revelation 19 : After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power to our God, 2 for his judgements are true and just; he has judged the great whore who corrupted the earth with her fornication, and he has avenged on her the blood of his servants. 3 Once more they said, Hallelujah! The smoke goes up from her for ever and ever. 4 And the twentyfour elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who is seated on the throne, saying, Amen. Hallelujah! 5 And from the throne came a voice saying, Praise our God, all you his servants, and all who fear him, small and great. 6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder-peals, crying out, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made 6

herself ready; 8 to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said to me, Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he said to me, These are true words of God. 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, You must not do that! I am a fellowservant with you and your comrades who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. COLLECT FOR ALL SAINTS DAY O almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 11 HYMN 1: FOR ALL THE SAINTS William Walsham How ( ) Australian Hymn Book Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; thou in the darkness still their one true light. Alleluia, Alleluia! 3 O may thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win with them, the victor s crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! 4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine, yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia 5 From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host; singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia! 11

HYMN 2: BLEST ARE THE PURE IN HEART John Keble ( ) and William John Hall ( ) Australian Hymn Book The Lord who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to dwell with us in lowliness, our pattern and our King; 4 Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be: give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee. HYMN 3: JERUSALEM THE GOLDEN Bernard of Cluny, tr. John Mason Neale ( ) New English Hymnal still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his cradle and his throne chooseth the pure in heart. 2 They stand, those halls of Sion, conjubilant with song and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; the Prince is ever with them, the daylight is serene, the pastures of the blessed are decked in glorious sheen. 3 There is the throne of David and there, from care released, the song of them that triumph, the shout of them that feast; and they who, with their Leader, have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white. 12

HYMN 4: THANKS BE TO GOD FOR HIS SAINTS Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Ancient and Modern (2013) 310 Reproduced by permission 4 O sweet and blessed country, shall I ever see thy face, O sweet and blessed country, shall I ever win thy grace? Exult, O dust and ashes! The Lord shall be thy part: his only, his for ever, thou shalt be, and thou art! Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping on to the end Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. 13

HYMN 5: SHOUT FOR JOY John L. Bell (b.1949) Together in Song 545 Reproduced with permission No more doubting, no more senseless dread: God s good self has graced our wine and bread; all the wonder heaven has kept in store, now is ours to keep for evermore. Celebrate with saints who dine on high, witnesses that love can never die. Hallelujah! thus their voices ring: nothing less in gratitude we bring. Praise the Maker, praise the Maker s Son, praise the Spirit three yet ever one; praise the God whose food and friends avow heav n starts here! The kingdom beckons now! 14
