Alleluia. Organ Postlude: Carillon - Herbert Murrill ( ). Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar. COLLECT Bountiful God, through your Son you have called us to repent of our sin, to believe the good news, and to celebrate the coming of your kingdom: teach us, like Christ s first apostles to hear the call to discipleship, and, forsaking old ways, to proclaim the good news of new life to a broken world; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen FIRST READING Jonah 3: 1-10 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day s walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence 2
that is in their hands. Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 62: 1-8 At 8am and 9am, please join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.30am, please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated. 1 My soul waits in silence for God: for from him comes my salvation. 2 He only is my rock and my salvation: my strong tower, so that I shall never be moved. Response 3 How long will you all plot against me to destroy me: as though I were a leaning fence or a buckling wall? 4 Their design is to thrust me from my height, and their delight is in lies: they bless with their lips, but inwardly they curse. 5 Nevertheless, my soul, wait in silence for God: for from him comes my hope. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: my strong tower, so that I shall not be moved. Response 7 In God is my deliverance and my glory: God is my strong rock and my shelter. 8 Trust in him at all times, O my people: pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. Response SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 7: I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. 3
GOSPEL READING Mark 1: Alleluia! Alleluia! The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark : Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4

6PM EVENING PRAYER WITH HYMNS Officiant and Preacher: The Revd Prof. Mark Lindsay Readers: Tim James and Canon Chris Foley Introit Hymn: Jesus calls us o er the tumult (hymn 2, pg. 12) Collection Hymn: Tell out, my soul (hymn 5, pg. 14) Dismissal Hymn: Immortal, invisible (hymn 4, pg. 13) Postlude: Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Georg Phillipp Telemann ( ). Organist: Mr Siegfried Franke, Cathedral Organist PSALM 33 : 1-12 Please join in saying the verses printed in bold. 1 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous: for it befits the just to praise him. 2 Give the Lord thanks upon the harp: and sing his praise to the lute of ten strings. 3 O sing him a new song: make sweetest melody, with shouts of praise. 4 For the word of the Lord is true: and all his works are faithful. 5 He loves righteousness and justice: the earth is filled with the loving-kindness of the Lord. 6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made: and their numberless stars by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathered the waters of the sea as in a water-skin: and laid up the deep in his treasuries. 8 Let the whole earth fear the Lord: and let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spoke, and it was done: `he commanded, and it stood fast. 10 The Lord frustrates the counsels of the nations: he brings to nothing the devices of the peoples. 11 But the counsels of the Lord shall endure for ever: the purposes of his heart from generation to generation. 12 Blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord: the people he chose to be his own possession. 6
FIRST READING Leviticus 19: 1-4, The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. 3 You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the Lord your God. 9 When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God. 11 You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12 And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Lord. 13 You shall not defraud your neighbour; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a labourer until morning. 14 You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling-block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. 15 You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbour. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord. 17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord. SECOND READING 1 John 2: I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven on account of his name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young people, because you have conquered the evil one. 14 I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; 16 for all that is in the world the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live for ever. COLLECT Bountiful God, through your Son you have called us to repent of our sin, to believe the good news, and to celebrate the coming of your kingdom: teach us, like Christ s first apostles to hear the call to discipleship, and, forsaking old ways, to proclaim the good news of new life to a broken world; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever, Amen 7

HYMN 1: REJOICE, THE LORD IS KING Charles Wesley ( ) Australian Hymn Book 147i 2 Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice. 3 His kingdom cannot fail, he rules o er earth and heaven; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice. 4 He sits at God s right hand, till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice. 5 Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus the judge shall come, and take his servants up to their eternal home. We soon shall hear the archangel s voice; the trump of God shall sound, Rejoice! 11
HYMN 2: JESUS CALLS US O ER THE TUMULT Cecil Frances Alexander ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard As of old Saint Andrew heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred leaving all for his dear sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world s golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, Christian, love me more. 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, that we love him more than these. 5 Jesus calls us: by thy mercies, Saviour, make us hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. HYMN 3: DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND John Greenleaf Whittier ( ) Australian Hymn Book 519ii 2 In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee. 4 Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace. 12
3 O sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love, interpreted by love! 5 Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm. HYMN 4: IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE Walter Chalmers Smith ( ) Australian Hymn Book 80 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above, thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree, and wither and perish: but naught changeth thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; of all thy rich graces, this grace, Lord, impart take the veil from our faces, the veil from our heart. All laud we would render, O help us to see, tis only the splendour of light hideth thee; and so let thy glory, Almighty, impart through Christ in the story, thy Christ to the heart. 13
HYMN 5 : TELL OUT, MY SOUL Timothy Dudley Smith (b.1926) Australian Hymn Book 109 Reproduced with permission Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name the Lord, the Mighty One. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children s children and for evermore! 14
