St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, home to worshippers from more than two dozen nations, seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia, and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us today: come and worship with us again. Whether you are Anglican, from another Christian Church or another faith tradition, you are warmly welcome to take part in the service. If you want to find out more about the Christian faith, please make yourself known to our clergy. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. 8AM BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER HOLY COMMUNION President and Preacher: The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor Reader: Eugene Chin 9AM FAMILY-STYLE EUCHARIST President: The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane Preacher: The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor Reader: Rod Kennedy Intercessions: Margaret Davis Gradual Hymn: Faithful vigil ended (hymn 2, pg. 11 ) Offertory Hymn: At the name of Jesus (hymn 5, pg. 13) Dismissal Hymn: The kingdom is upon you (hymn 4, pg. 12) Organ Postlude: Wir schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Johann Pachelbel ( ): Mrs Roslyn Carolane, Cathedral Assistant Organist 1

10.30AM CHORAL EUCHARIST President: The Revd Prof. Mark Lindsay Preacher: The Revd Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor Readers: Patsy King and Canon Michael Shand Intercessor: Craig Gray Processional Hymn: Sing how the age-long promise of a saviour (hymn 1, pg. 10) Gradual Hymn: Faithful vigil ended (hymn 2, pg. 11) Offertory Hymn: Songs of thankfulness (hymn 3, pg. 11) Dismissal Hymn: The kingdom is upon you (hymn 4, pg. 12) Setting: Communion Service in G Francis Jackson (b.1917) Psalm Chant: Joseph Barnby ( ) Communion motet: God in such love for us Malcolm Archer (b.1952) God in such love for us lent us this planet, gave it a purpose in time and in space: small as a spark from the fire of creation, cradle of life and the home of our race. Thanks be to God for its bounty and beauty, life that sustains us in body and mind: plenty for all, if we learn how to share it, riches undreamt of to fathom and find. Long have our human wars ruined its harvest; long has earth bowed to the terror of force; long have we wasted what others have need of, poisoned the fountain of life at its source. Thanks be to God Earth is the Lord s: it is ours to enjoy it, ours, as God s stewards, to farm and defend. From its pollution, misuse, and destruction, good Lord deliver us, world without end. Thanks be to God Organ Postlude: Processional - William Mathias ( ): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar COLLECT Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only Son was presented in the temple in accordance with the law, so we may be dedicated to you with pure and clean hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 2

FIRST READING Malachi 3 : See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire and like fullers soap; 3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 24 At 8am and 9am, please join in saying the verses printed in bold. At 10.30am, the psalm is sung by the Choir. 1 The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it: the compass of the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For he has founded it upon the seas: and established it upon the waters. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie. 5 They shall receive blessing from the Lord: and recompense from the God of their salvation. 6 Of such a kind as this are those who seek him: those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is the King of glory?: the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. 3

SECOND READING Hebrews 2 : Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Luke 2 : Alleluia! Alleluia! God s glory and salvation are revealed through his Son. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29 Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. 33 And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. 4

36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Officiant: The Revd Emily Fraser Preacher: The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane Readers: Ann Brady and Canon Michael Shand Introit Hymn: Sing how the age-long promise of a saviour (hymn 1, p. 10) Collection Hymn: As with gladness men of old (hymn 6, pg. 14) Dismissal Hymn: The kingdom is upon you (hymn 4, pg. 12) Responses: William Smith (c ) Psalm Chant: William Russell ( ) Setting: Evening Service in A flat Basil Harwood ( ) Anthem: O thou, the central orb Charles Wood ) O Thou, the central orb of righteous love, Pure beam of the most High, eternal Light Of this our wintry world, Thy radiance bright Awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above. Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine, Gilding our darksome heaven with rays Divine. Thy saints with holy lustre round Thee move, As stars about thy throne, set in the height Of God's ordaining counsel, as Thy sight Gives measured grace to each, Thy power to prove. Let Thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, Our nature all shall feel eternal day In fellowship with thee, transforming day To souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen. Postlude: Prelude and Fugue in A Major, BWV536 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ): Mr Lachlan Redd, Sub-Organist. 5

PSALM 48 1 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. 2 The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth: upon the north-side lieth the city of the great King; God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge. 3 For lo, the kings of the earth: are gathered, and gone by together. 4 They marvelled to see such things: they were astonished, and suddenly cast down. 5 Fear came there upon them, and sorrow: as upon a woman in her travail. 6 Thou shalt break the ships of the sea: through the east-wind. 7 Like as we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God upholdeth the same for ever. 8 We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God: in the midst of thy temple. 9 O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world s end: thy right hand is full of righteousness. 10 Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughter of Judah be glad: because of thy judgements. 11 Walk about Sion, and go round about her: and tell the towers thereof. 12 Mark well her bulwarks, set up her houses: that ye may tell them that come after. 13 For this God is our God for ever and ever: he shall be our guide unto death. FIRST READING 1 Samuel 1 : The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear in the presence of the Lord, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a nazirite for all time. 23 Her husband Elkanah said to her, Do what seems best to you, wait until you have weaned him; only may the Lord establish his word. So the woman remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. 24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed; and 6

the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord. She left him there for the Lord. SECOND READING John 2 : The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s house a market-place! 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. 18 The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? 19 Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days? 21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. 23 When he was in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone. COLLECT FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY O Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy Church and household continually in thy true religion; that they who do lean only upon the hope of thy heavenly grace may evermore be defended by thy mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 7

HYMN 1: SING HOW THE AGE-LONG PROMISE OF A SAVIOUR Editors of the New English Hymnal (156) based on Quod chorus vatum (c.9th cent.) Virgin most pure, and wondrously conceiving, bearing incarnate God in awed obedience, now she presents him for a spotless offering unto his Father. In God s high temple, Simeon the righteous takes to his loving arms with holy rapture that One for whom his longing eyes had waited, Jesus, Messiah. Father eternal, Son and Holy Spirit, Trinity blessed, Maker and Redeemer, giver of life, and Author of salvation, thine be the glory. 10

HYMN 2: FAITHFUL VIGIL ENDED Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) New English Hymnal 44. Reproduced with permission 2 All thy spirit promised, all the Father willed; now these eyes behold it perfectly fulfilled. HYMN 3: SONGS OF THANKFULNESS Christopher Wordsworth ( ) New English Hymnal 56 (104) 4 Christ, thy people s glory! Watching, doubting, cease: grant to us thy servants our discharge in peace. 3 This thy great deliv rance sets thy people free; Christ, their light, uplifted all the nations see. 2 Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; and at Cana wedding-guest in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addrest, God in Man made manifest Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil s might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill; anthems be to thee addrest, God in Man made manifest.

4 Sun and moon shall darkened be, stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, all will see his glorious sign; all will then the trumpet hear, all will see the Judge appear; thou by all wilt be confest, God in Man made manifest. 5 Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany, and may praise thee, ever blest, God in Man made manifest. HYMN 4: THE KINGDOM IS UPON YOU Robert Willis (b.1947) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 512 Reproduced with permission 2 God s kingdom is upon you! the message sounds today, it summons every pilgrim to take the questing way, with eyes intent on Jesus, our leader and our friend, who trod faith s road before us, and trod it to the end. 3 The kingdom is upon us! Stirred by the Spirit s breath, we glory in its freedom from emptiness and death; we celebrate its purpose, its mission and its goal, alive with the conviction that Christ can make us whole. 12

HYMN 5: AT THE NAME OF JESUS Caroline Maria Noel ( ) Together in Song Humbled for a season to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed. 4 When this same Lord Jesus shall appear again in his Father s glory, there with him to reign, then may we adore him, all before him bow, as our hearts confess him King of Glory now. 3 In your hearts enthrone him, there let him make new all that is not holy, all that is not true. He is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted and adored. 13

HYMN 6: AS WITH GLADNESS MEN OF OLD W. Chatterton Dix ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 51 2 As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour, to thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before thee whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy-seat. 3 As they offered gifts most rare at thy cradle rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin s alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly King. 4 Holy Jesus, every day keep us in the narrow way, and, when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. 5 In the heavenly country bright need they no created light; thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there for ever may we sing alleluias to our King. 14
