Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Please stand for the hymn 2 Come, O God of wind and flame: fill the earth with righteousness; teach us all to sing your name: may our lives your love confess. Sing out earth and skies 3 Come, O Justice, come, O Peace: come and shape our hearts anew; come and make oppression cease: bring us all to life in you. Sing out earth and skies Marty Haugen (b.1950) Together in Song 181 Reproduced with permission THE WELCOME The Officiant welcomes the people and then sings THE RESPONSES John Sanders ( ) O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 2
PSALM 129 Choir Please Sit 1 Many a time have they fought against me from my youth up: may Israel now say. 2 Yea, many a time have they vexed me from my youth up: but they have not prevailed against me. 3 The plowers plowed upon my back: and made long furrows. 4 But the righteous Lord: hath hewn the snares of the ungodly in pieces. 5 Let them be confounded and turned backward: as many as have evil will at Sion. 6 Let them be even as the grass growing upon the house-tops: which withereth afore it be plucked up; 7 Whereof the mower filleth not his hand: neither he that bindeth up the sheaves his bosom. 8 So that they who go by say not so much as, The Lord prosper you: we wish you good luck in the Name of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chant: Thomas Norris ( ) FIRST READING: Isaiah Read by a Lay Clerk 15 Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and glorious habitation. Where are your zeal and your might? The yearning of your heart and your compassion? They are withheld from me. 16 For you are our father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O LORD, are our father; our Redeemer from of old is your name. 17 Why, O LORD, do you make us stray from your ways and harden our heart, so that we do not fear you? Turn back for the sake of your servants, for the sake of the tribes that are your heritage. 18 Your holy people took possession for a little while; but now our adversaries have trampled down your sanctuary. 19 We have long been like those whom you do not rule, like those not called by your name O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence 2 as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3
THE MAGNIFICAT The Song of Mary, St Luke Please Stand My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Evening Service in F John Ireland ( ) SECOND READING: 2 Peter Read by Canon A/Prof. Avril Brereton 1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you 2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour spoken through your apostles. 3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts 4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation! 5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water, 6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless. 8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4
NUNC DIMITTIS The Song of Simeon, St Luke Please Stand Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. THE APOSTLES CREED Music: Evening Service in F Ireland Please Stand I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing THE LESSER LITANY The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Sanders Please sit/kneel Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE VERSICLE AND RESPONSES Sanders O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. 5
Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECTS Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANTHEM The truth from above arr. John Barnard (b.1948) This is the truth sent from above, the truth of God, the God of love, therefore don't turn me from your door, but hearken all both rich and poor. Though God had given all things good, yet sin we did and sin we would; and so a promise soon did run, that he would redeem us by his Son. Sung by the Choir And at this season of the year our blessed Redeemer did appear, and here did live and here did preach, and many thousands he did teach. Thus he in love to us behaved, to show us how we must be saved, and if you want to know the way be pleased to hear what he did say. 6
THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Concluding with THE GRACE The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen. THE NOTICES THE HYMN BEFORE THE SERMON Please Stand During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and go facilities is available on the plate. 2 Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within; prepare we in our hearts a home, where such a mighty guest may come. 3 For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge, and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away, like flowers that wither and decay. 4 To heal the sick stretch out thy hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let thy light restore earth s own true loveliness once more. 5 All praise, eternal Son, to thee whose advent doth thy people free, whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. Charles Coffin ( ), tr. John Chandler ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 27 THE SERMON The Revd Emily Fraser, Associate Priest 7
THE DISMISSAL HYMN Please Stand 2 God s kingdom is upon you! the message sounds today, it summons every pilgrim to take the questing way, with eyes intent on Jesus, our leader and our friend, who trod faith s road before us, and trod it to the end. 3 The kingdom is upon us! Stirred by the Spirit s breath, we glory in its freedom from emptiness and death; we celebrate its purpose, its mission and its goal, alive with the conviction that Christ can make us whole. Robert Willis (b.1947) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 512 Reproduced with permission THE BLESSING Remain Standing and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Please remain standing for the Procession THE ORGAN VOLUNTARY Choral, Op. 37 No. 4 Joseph Jongen ( ): Mr Mark Slavec, June Nixon Organ Scholar 8
PLEASE PRAY WITH US FOR THE WORLD The success of the UN sponsored peace talk for Yemen in Sweden, and for provision of daily needs for the people of Yemen dealing with civil war and starvation from famine; improved relationship between Russia and Ukraine; those who have lost homes and livelihoods through bush fires this week; improvement in the relationship between the Israeli Government and Palestinians living on the Gaza Strip; safety and provision of daily needs for refugees around the world, the removal of children and adult refugees from Nauru. THOSE SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT Our heavenly Father, we acknowledge our ingratitude when we have taken your goodness for granted, when the heaven has poured forth rain and the earth has produced its fruit. Yet now we cry to you for help, as the drought in Australia deepens. Have mercy on our land; have mercy on the people of the land. May your bountiful hand send forth rain upon our parched earth. Fulfil your promises that while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease, so that those in remote and rural areas may find relief from their distress and glorify your name for the provision of their needs. We ask this in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Parish of Falkland Islands (Bp Timothy Thornton).
