2 Christian Church in Ohio D I S C I P L E S O F C H R I S T A covenant network of congregations in mission: We are the Body of Christ gifted and called in covenant together as Disciples of Christ to be centers of transformation on the new mission frontier of our own communities. Dear Partners in Ministry, I continue to be excited about the vision we have in the Christian Church in Ohio. God is calling us to be: A covenant network of congregations in mission: We are the Body of Christ gifted and called in covenant together as Disciples of Christ to be centers of transformation on the new mission frontier of our own communities. A covenant network means that we are intentional about our relationships; centers of transformation means that our congregations become a place where individuals are transformed by the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and in turn our congregations are transforming the communities in which they are located. As leadership within the region has prayerfully considered this vision, three priorities have emerged: Strengthen Relationships and Building Networks o Become true community by Building trust through open and clear communication Listening to one another s hopes and dreams Caring for one another in times of joy and of pain Sharing our transforming experiences of Jesus Christ with our communities around us Leadership Development o Building on the strong ministry foundation of Camp Christian and other leadership programs that will deepen our Christian Spirituality. Congregational Transformation and Evangelism o Reclaiming the Great Commission to strengthen and renew the life of established congregations and starting 50 new congregations in Ohio by I would like to invite your spiritual wisdom and prayerful insight in discerning God s direction for our leadership together in accomplishing our vision as a Regional Church. The Regional Pastors and Regional Elders have made a commitment to present at district clergy meeting to solicit your prayers and support, to receive your thoughts and ideas and to keep you informed on what s going in our regional ministry. We are also committed to a partnership of ministry with you to support and resource your work in any way possible. If you have any questions, concerns or inspired revelations, please give us a call. I look forward with great anticipation of what God will do through us as ministers of the Gospel and leaders in Christ s church in the days ahead. May God s Blessings be with you, Bill

Here is a portion of an from Rev. Mary Wood, Pastor at East Christian Church in Oregon, Ohio This morning (Sunday) when I arrived at East, I put my key into the door, and before I opened the door, I noticed water running down the inside of the window, and heard what sounded like a distant waterfall inside the church. When I opened the door, I stepped into about 3 inches of water. Water everywhere. Water pouring out of the ceiling, insulation hanging through the ceiling, broken globes from light fixtures laying spread out on the floor. Parts of the ceiling everywhere on the floor. As of tonight, Sunday, 2/3 of the building has been completely gutted. Ceiling, walls, and carpet. We are so fortunate in that our computers and other equipment were not touched by water. Maybe 60,000 dollars in damage. But no one was hurt!!!!!! WE HAVE SO MUCH FOR WHICH TO BE THANKSFUL! About 2/3 of the sanctuary was untouched. What was touched was only water damage on the carpet. And Faith United Methodist Church (on Christian Unity Sunday!!!) on the corner of Starr and Coy opened their Fellowship Hall to us at the last minute, where we held Church and debriefed together as a Church and made a plan for the next several weeks of worship. Keep our Church community and all the people doing the clean up in your prayers. Pray for this journey that we are on, and that we grow stronger in our faith and together as a community of Jesus Christ as a result of this experience. God bless, and no need to worry. The Lord has this all under control. Messages for Mary and the rest of the church may be sent to eastchristian@sbcglobal.net Continued on the back

Reflections on the Binding of Isaac in the Context of Interreligious Conversation The story of Abraham s near-sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis 22 became a central text in both Judaism and Christianity. Its variant in the Qur an, in which the son is unnamed, assumes much importance in Islam. Our discussion will focus on the ways in which this rich but troubling story has been absorbed into the Abrahamic religions.

42 Session 2: How Monotheism Unites and Divides Jews, Christians and Muslims The deceptively simple post-biblical story of Abraham and his father s idols is well known among Jews and Muslims, though not so much among Christians. It demonstrates a great deal about the theology of ancient Judaism in relation to Greco-Roman culture, a theology that is still highly relevant in our scientific age. This lecture will explore that relevance and also address the feature of Abrahamic monotheism that prevents an equation of the theologies of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam with each other through a facile appeal to their putative common father, Abraham. Session 3: A Conversation with Dr. Levenson CTS s Indiana Professor of Christian Thought Emeritus Clark Williamson will moderate a conversation with Dr. Levenson about the lectures and their implications for interfaith relations. He will be joined by Associate Director of the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program at IU Bloomington Zaineb Istrabadi, CTS Macallister-Petticrew Emeritus Professor of Old Testament Gerald Janzen and Rabbi Dennis Sasso of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck. CHAPEL SERVICE WITH THE ROSE ENSEMBLE Tuesday, March 24, 2009 >> 1pm 2pm Sweeney Chapel, CTS Free and open to the public JON LEVENSON Jon Levenson is Alfred A. List Professor of Jewish Studies at Harvard University. Dr. Levenson is primarily a specialist in the literary and theological dimensions of the Hebrew Bible, but he also works in rabbinic midrash, medieval Jewish Bible commentary and Jewish-Christian relations. He earned his BA from Harvard College and his MA and PhD degrees from Harvard University. His books include The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son: The Transformation of Child Sacrifice in Judaism and Christianity and Resurrection: The Power of God for Christians and Jews (with Kevin Madigan). 4 MASTER CLASS Singing Early Music The Rose Ensemble Monday, March 23, 2009 >> 12:30pm 1:50pm Room 120, Lilly Hall, Butler University Cost: $15 or free for CTS and Butler University students with student ID Deadline: March 16, 2009 Co-sponsor: Butler University Work on vocal style, performance practice and ensemble techniques that enhance interpretation of a rich and diverse vocal music repertoire. We rarely experience this Self because it is obscured by sub-personalities. Some of these try to protect us by controlling the external world or getting us to withdraw. Others are lost in the fear, pain, and shame of the past traumas. Richard Schwartz s Internal Family Systems (IFS) model provides a way to help you access the Self and bring the natural compassion and confidence of that state into your life. Through individual and group exercises, you will have opportunities to directly experience the Self as well as your sub-personalities and learn how to continue this transformative work on your own. This workshop is designed to help therapists and pastoral caregivers better conceptualize and respond to disappointment as it emerges in the clinical and pastoral context. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, we will look at various forces and meanings that influence disappointment as well as clinical interventions that can assist in the symbolic reorganization of the emotional and spiritual matrix within which disappointment is held.
