1 summer 2017/2018 Prayer Notes Reaching Australia for Christ since 1919

2 The Bush Church Aid Society The Bush Church Aid Society has a heart for people living in remote and regional Australia. We are committed to going the distance to reach Australia for Christ. Under God, we do this by proclaiming Christ so that people may respond to Him; nurturing Christians in their faith and ministry; strengthening local Christian communities in their mission; providing services of Christian care and advocacy; developing an understanding of Christ s mission and promoting active partnership throughout the church. Our core commitments are relying on prayer for God s help and the Holy Spirit s guidance; trusting in the vision, authority and encouragement of Scripture; working in humility, servanthood and fellowship with the church in mission; developing interdependent relationships with Diocesan Bishops; providing pastoral care and professional development for staff and responsibly managing our resources. Front cover: Taken by The Revd David Rogers-Smith at Mission Beach, Queensland

6 Editorial I grew up in a church-going family and was converted at fifteen. Since then I have been part of nine parishes and all but one supported BCA. I can still remember things said or slides shown by Bill Rich, Barry Huggett and Theo Hayman. The annual BCA deputation in each parish was always a well-attended Sunday. Supporting BCA was simply a normal part of being Christian, especially an Australian Christian. Of course, there is more to this than a city dweller s fond imagination of the romance of the bush. There is the compulsion of Jesus great commission for us to go into all the world and make disciples. This must include those spread thinly across outback tracks as well as those clustered in crowded cities around the globe. And there is also the matter of fairness. Everyone should have a chance. The Word that was with God in the beginning is the light of all people so everybody has some opportunity to respond to the Word but how much more likely is such a response when they also hear that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. Cities and larger towns across Australia are oversupplied with churches and a choice of both parish and denomination. The quality of congregational life and witness may not always be ideal but churches are there and if one disappoints there is always another option nearby. Not so on the outer Barcoo where churches are few. Fairness requires us to see that everyone who gives God a thought has a chance to join a congregation of saints and seekers led by someone equipped to teach everything that Jesus has commanded even when the congregation can t pay the full cost of being pastored. Economic rationalism presses us to forget those who can t afford to pay for ministry but St Paul responds: At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. (2 Corinthians 8:14 15) BCA is God s agent to balance the supply of leaders, pray-ers and givers especially pray-ers, the engine room of all mission. The Revd David Crain Vice President BCA

Pray too that the Lord will bless the great relationships that he and Matt have established. During this time of sapping heat, pray that the Lord will give us energy as ministries are resumed for Pray also that the Lord will grow the numbers of those who make church involvement their priority and making Christ known their passion. 58 Pray for Former BCA Field Staff Derek & Amanda McArtney Derek is really enjoying the different evangelistic opportunities that Mission to Seafarers brings. Amanda is concentrating on teaching child protection in church and Diocesan settings. We love being part of Port Hedland Church! Stuart & Katherine Haynes We give thanks for Stuart and Katherine s ministry with BCA in Moranbah and Blackwater. Please pray for their new life in Bega. Stuart is the families minister at St John s, Katherine is working as a chaplain at the Sapphire Coast Anglican College and Christina is in her first year of high school. Rob & Jenny Stubbs/Beth Hazell We give thanks for seeing many young people experience Australian rural life through the Dusty Boots Program since its establishment in Our prayer is for these young people to go on to be involved in rural life and more importantly, rural ministry. Rob and Jenny are now settled into their home in Gerringong. Please pray for Rob s continued cancer treatment and give thanks for its effectiveness and the wisdom of the medical practitioners. Beth concluded her last term of teaching in and starts her retirement. She gives thanks for God s provision to do this. Joel & Hannah Hill Pray that we, with all of God s people here, would grow in our love and concern for the lost. May God be glorified in all we do. Pray for opportunities to connect and share the good news about Jesus and for people to thirst to learn more and commit their lives to Him.

59 Irfon & Barbara Griffiths We thank our Lord that we moved into our retirement home at the end of October, 10 months late but not 14 as was expected. We praise our Lord for the privilege of serving as Regional Officer during the vacancy period, for the welcome and support of the office staff and the parishes visited. Please pray that we will be effective witnesses to Jesus as we make new relationships on deputations and in our retirement village. Joy Sandefur Give thanks that Nungalinya College was awarded runner-up as the best training institution in the Northern Territory. Pray that all who study there will grow in their faith and develop skills for ministry. In retirement I enjoy being associate priest at my local church in Greensborough, some locum work and grandchildren. I also chair a small group at church exploring what reconciliation with Indigenous people looks like for us. Anne Nixon Please pray for Anne who is the senior minister in the parish of Clermont. Please also pray for the church in Winton, that new leaders will be raised up and parishioners will work together to build the church in the community. Peter & Gwen Adkins We have moved to Tea Gardens on the mid north coast of New South Wales. Peter is the rector of the Parish of Buladelah and Tea Gardens. Thank God for a good move and warm welcome into the parish. Pray we would stay close to Jesus and walk in the spirit. Pray also that we would have discernment and wisdom to see what God is doing here in the lives of both believers and not yet believers.
