1 summer 2016 Prayer Notes Reaching Australia for Christ since 1919

2 The Bush Church Aid Society The Bush Church Aid Society has a heart for people living in remote and regional Australia. We are committed to going the distance to reach Australia for Christ. Under God, we do this by proclaiming Christ so that people may respond to Him; nurturing Christians in their faith and ministry; strengthening local Christian communities in their mission; providing services of Christian care and advocacy; developing an understanding of Christ s mission and promoting active partnership throughout the church. Our core commitments are relying on prayer for God s help and the Holy Spirit s guidance; trusting in the vision, authority and encouragement of Scripture; working in humility, servanthood and fellowship with the church in mission; developing interdependent relationships with Diocesan Bishops; providing pastoral care and professional development for staff and responsibly managing our resources. 6 Editorial 6 One of BCA s focus areas is planting and renewing sustainable churches. At the recent Field Staff Conference I had the privilege of facilitating a discussion with about 15 of our Field Staff, hearing from each of them about how they are seeking to do this. Their contexts were very different: Some were planting in regional centres, some in mining towns and some on remote islands or in very remote inland towns. Some were in new growth areas and others in farming communities. These church plants took many different shapes. Some were newly formed missional communities; others were new congregations alongside existing congregations, while others were renewing existing dwindling and ageing churches. There was great energy in the group as each person shared the challenges they face and opportunities they are seeking to grasp under God s guiding hand. Here are just some of the tried and field-tested principles that emerged: Prayer is absolutely vital for commencing any new work of God. It places us in a listening posture so we can discern what God is doing and then join in. Abundant sowing of the gospel seed must take place to show where receptive hearts are. Jesus commands us to make disciples; He also says He will build His Church. Let s not get those round the wrong way. Prioritise time with disciples who obey Jesus teaching, and so... create a culture of passionate missionary discipleship, and make disciples who will make disciples who will make disciples. The character of the members of a church planting team is the first priority. Help people discover the unique way God has wired them and for what unique purpose, rather than fit them into pre-existing roles. There is great power in Christian community. Building loving relationships and creating safe spaces for people to connect with each other through meals and other social gatherings is essential. Please pray with us that God will help all those BCA Field Staff who are planting and renewing sustainable churches. Pray that God by His Spirit and Word would empower and encourage them and their teams to enact these principles, as Jesus builds his church across remote, rural and regional Australia. The Revd Peter Adkins Regional Officer NSW/ACT

12 4 Kununurra Vacant PO Box 2392 Kununurra WA 6743 Phone The time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger. At the time of writing it was expected that Kees and Cindy Bootsma would be in place for a second period of locum ministry. Thank God for their willingness to serve in this way. 16 6 Karratha/Dampier Archdeacon Les & Mrs Jenny Gaulton 2 Samson Way Karratha WA 6714 Phone l.gaulton@bushchurchaid.com.au For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 Praise God for His rescue mission, for sending Jesus as the once for all sacrifice for our sins so that we could be forgiven and made clean and become children of God. Pray that we will faithfully proclaim that truth through Christmas opportunities. Praise God for another new year to serve Him throughout the Pilbara of Western Australia. Following the loss of many faithful members in 2016, pray that God would raise up committed Christians to stand with us as we proclaim the gospel of Jesus and that people would respond with repentance and faith. Thank God for His sustaining grace through these hot difficult months. Pray that we will have renewed energies and enthusiasm as we continue in ministry and that many will receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Karratha is the residential, educational and service centre for the West Pilbara region. Dampier is a major port for the export of iron ore, salt, and natural gas. The Dampier Seafarers Centre services thousands of visiting seafarers every year. Long work hours, high pay, extreme materialism and secularism are constant barriers that only the gospel of Jesus can overcome. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 16

18 7 Wickham The Revd Richard & Mrs Tracy Goscombe 33 Herbert Way Wickham WA 6720 Phone Mobile For Christ s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 19 7 The Revd David & Mrs Priya Morgan Evangeli (2015) PO Box 268 Paraburdoo WA 6754 Phone Paraburdoo/Tom Price I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. Daniel 6:26 There are a number of nearby towns and Aboriginal communities not currently receiving regular gospel ministry. Please pray that gospel ministry would increase in Onslow, Pannawonica, Wakathuni, Bellary Springs, and other similar places. We anticipate that Priya will be in Sydney for about four months from (and Dave for some of that time). Please pray for us as a family, and for provision of ongoing ministry in our absence. Please pray for more opportunities to share the gospel in the South Pilbara with children, adults, people in Aboriginal communities, mining camps and on cattle stations. There are so many who need to hear, please ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers. Life goes on following the downturn in iron ore price which has greatly reduced the population and workforce of our towns. Gospel ministry also goes on. We are thankful for the believers and non-believers we have the privilege to live alongside. Please especially pray for our evangelism, and the evangelism of all God s people here; that many more would be gathered to the good shepherd who came to bring life to the full. Many people go away to escape the heat, and there are few tourists, who are so important to the town s economy in the cooler months. Summer is even harder for those living in camps, without electricity. While underground is cooler, there is actually too much moisture to live there long-term (unlike Coober Pedy). Summer is a good time to build closer relationships with those who are still around. Diocese of Armidale The Rt Revd Rick Lewers 52

53 28 Winton The Revd Anne & Mr Noel Nixon PO Box 142 Winton QLD 4735 Phone Fax For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 Give thanks for the success of the Festival of Christmas Trees, bringing the community together. Please pray for those folk who remain in Winton to be part of the congregation during summer. Pray for a wonderful wet season. Give thanks for the wonderful attendance at services during. Please pray for good rain, and for restful holidays with family during (if the rain doesn t stop us going). Give thanks for the renewal of energy and enthusiasm from holidays with family. Please pray for staff and students at the two schools in Winton, and those in Boulia and Bedourie. Pray for a replacement School Chaplain in the State School after I finish at the end of term. Winton Parish has three towns within its boundaries: Winton, Boulia and Bedourie. There are also small communities at Middleton, Corfield and Kynuna. It takes about four hours to drive from Winton to Boulia, and another two hours to Bedourie. The Shires within the Parish are severely affected by drought. This area is blessed with striking scenery and wonderful people. Anglican Church Central Queensland The Rt Revd David Robinson 53

54 29 Moranbah The Revd Capt Stuart & Capt Katherine Haynes Christina (2004) C/- St Francis Anglican Church St Francis Drive Moranbah QLD 4744 Phone It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 School RE (Scripture), community carols and our Christmas service are a great opportunity to teach the true meaning of Christ. Please pray that our message was clear and all heard the good news. Please pray for the many people on holiday and their safety as they travel great distances to see family over the Christmas and new year break. Please uphold the leadership team as they prepare and plan their ministries for the year ahead. As Mainly Music begins, please pray for encouraging leadership support where the team is built up. Please pray for outreach and welcoming new people to town to start contracts for the year. Please pray for the Op Shop volunteers and manager as they serve the community. Stuart and Katherine have been ministering as BCA Field Staff in the Bowen Basin for eight years. They finish their term there after Christmas and move to their new home in Bega. They await God s leading. Anglican Church Central Queensland The Rt Revd David Robinson 54

No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:4 Pray that the many hundreds of people who attended Christmas services in Wengen and Zermatt make more room in their hearts for Christ over the coming year. As the new year starts please pray for the ICS Council and staff as they look to the Lord s guidance in the coming year and for the accounts department as they complete the financial year. Please pray for the planning of our annual Chaplains and Families Conference from April in Switzerland. For the speakers, children s and worship leaders and that many will attend the conference which is a lifeline allowing Chaplains and families to meet with others doing similar ministry. ICS is an evangelical Anglican mission agency to English-speakers of any nationality. We are a patronage society and a mission to English-speakers through church growth, planting and outreach. 55

56 31 Pray for the Finance & Property Committee Mr Richard Host Mr Matthew Bradfield Mr Greg Bridge Pray for the National Councillors Mr Fred Chilton Mr Martin Drevikovsky The Revd Dr Mark Short Please pray: For wisdom as the Committee consider the management of the finances and the share portfolio of BCA. As they prepare and consider recommendations to the BCA Executive. For hearts and minds that will seek God s will in the distribution of generous donations to the Field. For sound judgement and responsibilities. The Committee will be gracious in their decision making. Pray for BCA Staff in Transition The Revd Gary & Nikki Alexander Gary and Nikki finish their time as BCA Field Staff at the end of They are exploring new vocational opportunities in the Kimberleys. Pray that God will lead in this time of transition and that they and their boys Thomas and Tobias know God s peace in this. Ms Jen Schabel I am working as a Christian SRE coordinator in two high schools in Goulburn. Please thank God for these opportunities and pray for developing relationships. 56

57 Pray for BCA Staff in Transition Mrs Robyn Williams Give thanks that our Lord has guided me every step of the way over the past six months. I give thanks too that He has the detail that we could not possibly imagine. I have moved into my new home having downsized from the family home of some 66 years. God has been gracious and I thank Him for His provision. Please pray I settle in well and that the future brings glory to God. The Revd Peter and Mrs Joy Palmer We are still greatly encouraged by the commitment to the gospel of the people of Beenleigh Parish. New ideas are constantly coming forward and being embraced. We are grateful to God for the time we get to spend with our daughter Sarah and her husband Abe, after living so far away for so long. Peter still has contact with miners, who now live all over the world. Joy s leg continues to heal and she is gradually doing more. Mr Ran & Mrs Jenny Mitchell We give thanks for the continued prayer for our Parish of Boggabilla, and the encouragement of so many people. We thank God for the rain that has fallen over the drought areas, and we pray that more people will see God s mercy to us all. 57

58 Pray for BCA Staff in Transition Lindsay and Carolyn Whybrow We give thanks for the opportunity of ministering in Christ s name with BCA. Please give thanks that we are now in our new home after Lindsay s eight months in hospital. Pray for us as we settle into our new church home and community in Uralla, NSW. Please continue to pray for Lindsay as he copes with his disabilities as a quadriplegic and that his body will continue to heal. The Revd Barry & Mrs Avril Luke There have been many changes in our ministry and life since moving to Cummins. We went from the desert to farming community and nearby coastline. From mums and dads with young children to grandparents. From Chaplain to Priest and Parish Administrator to housewife. Please give thanks to God who has equipped us to fulfil these new roles. NSW/ACT SUPPORTERS PRAYER MEETING BCA Field Staff Rod and Christene Oldfield vwill be in Sydney in 2017 and will speak to us at the NSW/ACT Supporters Prayer Meeting. Please join us on Tuesday 7 between 1 2pm (bring your own lunch). For further information heather@bushchurchaid.com.au or call (02)
