2 The Bush Church Aid Society The Bush Church Aid Society has a heart for people living in remote and regional Australia. We are committed to going the distance to reach Australia for Christ. Under God, we do this by proclaiming Christ so that people may respond to Him; nurturing Christians in their faith and ministry; strengthening local Christian communities in their mission; providing services of Christian care and advocacy; developing an understanding of Christ s mission: and promoting active partnership throughout the church. Our core commitments are relying on prayer for God s help and the Holy Spirit s guidance; trusting in the vision, authority and encouragement of Scripture; working in humility, servanthood and fellowship with the church in mission; developing interdependent relationships with Diocesan Bishops; providing pastoral care and professional development for staff: and responsibly managing our resources. 2

6 Editorial Psalm 66:16-20 teaches us... Come and listen, all who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for me. I cried out to Him with my mouth, and praise was on my tongue. If I had been aware of malice in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. However, God has listened; He has paid attention to the sound of my prayer. May God be praised! He has not turned away my prayer or turned His faithful love from me. (Holman Christian Standard Bible ) This reminds us that God listens to our prayers. He pays attention. When we sincerely come to God, crying out to Him and with praise, He listens. It is an amazing thing that we do when we pray to God. It is amazing that He listens to us, the potter choosing to listen to the pot. The first of BCA s stated core commitments is to rely on prayer for God s help and the Holy Spirit s guidance. One of the things that I have learnt about BCA since joining the National Office in January is that this is not merely a statement on the wall but it a genuine commitment that is worked on, practised and encouraged in many ways, including through these published Prayer Notes. I know this because many have told me that our Field Staff are greatly encouraged by the prayers of BCA supporters. Let us continue to encourage them by praying, for we know that, when we do, God is listening. Greg Bridge Chief Operations Officer 6

7 1 National Office Janine, Greg, Mark, Philippa, Desiree, Melinda and Rebecca The Revd Dr Mark & Mrs Monica Short, Mrs Rebecca Jeavons, Mr Greg Bridge, Ms Desiree Chan, Mrs Philippa McLoughlin, Miss Melinda Law and Mrs Janine van den Tillaart Level 7, 37 York Street Sydney NSW 2000 Phone Fax Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of me. Matthew 11:6 Praise God and pray for safe keeping for all National Office Staff and office volunteers during winter. Please pray for any follow-up arising from the BCA Annual Council Meeting held in May. Please pray for Peter Volkofsky, who was recently appointed to work in Distance Scripture Education for rural NSW. Praise God for all Field Staff and their families and pray for protection from coughs and colds during winter. As winter continues, praise God and pray for safe keeping of the congregations where Field Staff minister and that they will continue to attend church, even if it is cold and possibly wet. The National Office provides overall administrative and operational structures for BCA. With the Regional Offices, it works towards the best outcomes in response to gospel opportunities. 7

8 2 National Researcher/Adviser on Indigenous Matters The Revd Dr Joy Sandefur 4/74 Airlie Road Montmorency VIC 3094 Phone As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him. Psalm 18:30 Pray for prison chaplains and others who minister to Indigenous people in jail. Ask God to give them understanding hearts and many opportunities to talk about Jesus. Also pray for ways to minister to the families of prisoners who have to deal with many difficulties. Ask God to encourage Aboriginal church leaders and clergy. Pray that God will build up their churches as they reach out to different groups in their communities. Ask Him to send revival to Indigenous churches throughout Australia and that many lives will be changed. Pray that the many students who study at Nungalinya College will take what they have learnt back to their communities and use it in their various church contexts. Ask God to encourage and strengthen them as they learn to minister to others. In the honorary role of National Researcher/Adviser on Indigenous Matters, Joy provides assistance in research and issues relating to ministry by BCA with Indigenous people. Ministry is widely varied. BCA has Indigenous staff and those who walk alongside Indigenous people in various capacities. With a long history of working beside Indigenous people, BCA desires continued partnership with them. Pray for wisdom as future ministry is planned. 8

Revelation 12:11 Tourist season is in full flight now. Pray that as tourists visit our church we will encourage them in the gospel and that they will do the same for us. Pray that as we hold a pre-evangelistic event this month, our love of others will promote the gospel to them. As a family we visit Perth for deputation this month. Pray for our parish council as it begins planning how we will make and mature disciples of Christ in Exmouth in Please also pray for us this month as we seek to enact last year s plans and hold an event to share the gospel with non-christians. 12 4 Kununurra The Revd Gary & Mrs Nikki Alexander Thomas (2011) Tobias (2014) PO Box 2392 Kununurra WA 6743 Phone How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Romans 10:14 Pray that our church weekend away at Lake Argyle (10 12 ) will be of great value and relationships will be formed and deepened. Café Church starts up again this month. Pray for us as we start to prepare people in our parish for a mission trip to Cambodia next year. Kununurra is a magnificent part of God s creation with many beautiful sites to visit and things to see. It is surrounded by irrigated farm land with an abundance of fresh water. Farming is a fast growing industry in our region along with tourism and mining. St James Kununurra meets at 9:30am (all year round) and at 5pm for Café Church ( to September). Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 12

13 4 Kununurra Co-Workers Mr Jim & Mrs Natalie Watson Jesse (2004) Matthew (2005) Luke (2007) Isabel (2010) PO Box 2196 Kununurra WA 6743 Mobile Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Matthew 19:14 Praise God for: Our two long-term foster daughters (sisters aged 3 & 4 years) who joined our family in March. Give thanks for these precious little ones with whom we are growing in love. Give thanks for the support of friends during these changes and their patience as it impacts our availability. Pray for: Our family, as all eight of us adjust emotionally, practically and behaviourally to fostering. Ask for wisdom, patience and energy as we parent. Pray that we will all grow in love and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray for our three daughters learning how to show love, respect and obedience. Ask for wisdom on how to manage our ministry roles throughout 2016, particularly Bible study and visitation. The population in Kununurra/Wyndham is currently about 7000 people, about half of whom are North Australian Indigenous people. Some of these people call themselves stolen generation people. Lots of these senior people have had a close connection with the Church through mission life. The Watson family have been in Kununurra since 2004 and minister with these people. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 13

14 5 Newman The Revd Capt Derek & Capt Amanda McArtney PO Box 68 Newman WA 6753 Phone or Fax Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. Romans 12:9-10 Today we have the final day of our Pilbara Men of Iron Camp (3 5 ). Some men from Parnngurr (the Aboriginal community we have been visiting) had talked about joining us: we pray that this happened. Please pray that it has been a time of rich fellowship, great teaching and salvation for those not saved. We are very excited about the BCA tour bus coming to visit us at the end of the month. Please pray for safe travels and great blessings for our visitors as they experience our church family. Our hope is that we radiate Christ s truth, love and light to the least, the last and the lost here in Newman. We would appreciate your prayers for our family. Our two daughters in-law are expecting our first two grandchildren in the first week of October. Pray that we will continue to be a loving family to this wonderful community of believers here as well. In this our sixth year in the Jewel of the Pilbara, we still never cease to be amazed at the faithfulness of God and the richness of His love amongst His people here. We are ever mindful of the power of prayer from all of you, who keep us before the Master s throne of grace. We praise God for the opportunity to preach Christ crucified. 15 5 Port Hedland The Revd Philip & Mrs Elke Knight Annabella (2001) Lilly (2005) 9 Padbury Place Port Hedland WA 6721 Phone p.knight@bushchurchaid.com.au My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. May we be able to clearly present what our ministry here looks like and meet those who have faithfully supported us for over 10 years. Pray for our church camp at 80 Mile Beach from Give thanks for our home groups and Ladies Bible study that meet during the week and for those who lead them. Pray for our church to grow in personal holiness and eagerness to share the gospel with neighbours and work associates. The economic downturn has greatly affected Port Hedland with many people losing their jobs and leaving town. But the gospel continues to shine brightly in the midst of the uncertainty of this life and reveals the dreams of financial security and materialistic possessions as fake and ultimately destructive. We give thanks for BCA supporting us to proclaim the gospel and see people s lives transformed. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 15

16 6 Karratha/Dampier Archdeacon Les & Mrs Jenny Gaulton 2 Samson Way Karratha WA 6714 Phone l.gaulton@bushchurchaid.com.au Humble yourselves, therefore, under God s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 Praise God for a safe return from long service leave and give thanks for George May who locumed for us. Dampier is a major port for the export of iron ore, salt, and natural gas. The Dampier Seafarers Centre services thousands of visiting seafarers every year. Pray for the Chaplain, Ian McGilvray and his wife Susan as they undertake this vital and demanding ministry. Long work hours, high pay, extreme materialism and secularism are constant barriers that only the gospel of Jesus can overcome. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 16

Luke 24:46-47 Praise God that Daphne is really enjoying school and that we have started to build connections and make friends outside of church. Give thanks that the gospel grows people and is growing us. Pray for David as he preaches through the first few chapters of Romans. Pray that our holiday at the start of refreshes and energises us for gospel work. Pray that we work hard to discern the heart idols in our church members, the wider community and especially ourselves, and that Christ will replace them with Himself. Give thanks for our children and pray that our family grows in love for each other and the Lord. Ask God to give us great wisdom and creativity to serve Him well. Pray that we find ways to show and share the love of Christ at the Mingenew Expo. David is the Senior Minister for the Parish of Dongara/Mingenew. About 3.5 hours drive north from Perth, Dongara is home to a variety of people from retirees to crayfishers, miners to farmers. It is visited by many tourists. Mingenew is more agricultural and is about 50km inland. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 17

They will be hosting breakfast and after school kids clubs, spending time in local schools and running BBQ church. Give thanks for the Youthworks/Dusty Boots mission and pray for the support team from our link church at Norwest who returned this year. They not only catered, but also provided transport and looked after the logistics, encouraged and supported the team, and got involved wherever they could. Pray for the church as the mining downturn and continuing retrenchments cut deeper into the fabric of our church and community. Both our wardens have been retrenched, but don t want to leave the area. Pray for the Lord s provision for them and the church. Wickham is 1600kms north of Perth, and as far as you can get from Sydney in Australia (5000kms). 19 7 The Revd David & Mrs Priya Morgan Evangeli (2015) PO Box 268 Paraburdoo WA 6754 Phone Paraburdoo/Tom Price Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. Psalm 127:1 Pray that those who attend our monthly men s and women s groups will have an ever deepening understanding of Jesus, His character, His teaching, His saving work and the hope He brings. Pray for wise ways of teaching the Bible to children and teenagers. Thank God for the visitors who come through at this time of year. Pray for opportunities to meaningfully connect with them, and encourage them to know or grow in Jesus, Please also pray for a Dusty Boots visit to some of our local Indigenous friends. WA is very transient with people often moving between the Pilbara, Perth, Geraldton, Bussleton, Mandurah and Margaret River. Pray for faithful gospel ministry in all these places, and for Christians to share a vision of seeing Christ honoured throughout the state. We said goodbye to some much loved members of both Tom Price and Paraburdoo churches this year, but are thankful for new friends God has brought into fellowship with us. The continuing downturn in the iron ore market has hit both towns hard. Pray that God our Father will provide for people s need and comfort in a difficult financial climate and also opportunity for them trust Jesus. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson 19

23 10 The Revd Brad & Dr Joh Henley Jemima (2009) Gabriella (2012) 7 Osmond Street Kingscote Kangaroo Island SA 5223 Phone b.henley@bushchurchaid.com.au Kangaroo Island One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple. Psalm 27:4 Give thanks for God s work in and through the small family of disciples at Family Church. Ask God to deepen our faith and trust in Him and bring others (both unbelievers and mature believers) to join us in His mission. Pray for wisdom in overcoming challenges to deepening discipleship (geographical, other commitments etc). May the Lord give us a passion for Him. Pray for the pastoral care workers in the Kangaroo Island community education campuses. May God bless them and shine brightly through them in the community. May relationships between the churches and school grow, deepen and flourish. Please pray for Joh as God knits together a baby due in September. Pray for Jemima and Gabriella as they adjust to changes at home. May God always be their peace and joy. Kangaroo Island s 4500 residents face the joys and trials of isolation, including beautiful views and wildlife, separation from extended family, lower income and a higher cost of living. In February 2015 we started a fortnightly Family Church in Kingscote with a very small group from churches in other towns. Please ask God to increase our number with those not yet connected to church. May He draw islanders to Himself. Diocese of Adelaide The Most Revd Dr Jeffrey Driver 23

24 11 Coober Pedy The Revd Geoff & Mrs Tracey Piggott PO Box 266 Coober Pedy SA 5723 Phone/Fax For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this? Esther 4:14 The new tourist outreach ministry is in full swing. Pray for open hearts and minds in the tourists and that their visit may spark a new interest in Christianity. May other congregation members take up the challenge of sharing ministry in this way. Please pray for supporting churches that are planning on sending teams to work alongside us. May God use these times to both encourage us and help them better understand the needs of the BCA family. May their own churches benefit from the bonding such an experience brings. We have been here four years now. May God use our many connections with people for gospel purposes. May we live godly lives among this community that they are caused to ask who this Jesus is. May our Scripture assemblies each term be well planned and received. Coober Pedy, like many towns depending on mining, has been slowly declining. With a population of approximately people, there is still much to do and many are disinterested in God. But there are many opportunities with tourists and supporting Christians travelling through to Uluru, and the APY (Aboriginal) communities. While our ministry is focused on Coober Pedy, there is some contact with Aboriginal communities and cattle stations. Diocese of Willochra The Rt Revd John Stead 24

Pray for ICS Seasonal Chaplains Herrick and Judy Daniel and Colin and Jenifer Pontin as they minister from the beginning of until the middle of October. ICS is an evangelical Anglican mission agency to English-speakers of any nationality. We are a patronage society and a mission to English-speakers through church growth, planting and outreach. 53

54 31 The Revd John Nicholls (Chair) Mrs Aila Alderson The Revd Lilian Morgan Dr Bill Anscombe The Revd Dr Mark Short (Ex-officio) Pray for the Personnel Committee Ministry Priority Panel Mr Fred Chilton Mrs Mellita Bate The Revd David O Mara The Revd Dr Mark Short (Ex-officio) Uphold the Personnel Committee; give them guidance, sensitivity and clear direction in their responsibilities in relational matters. For the Ministry Priority Panel, we pray for clear directives in consideration and implementation of new ministry initiatives. Pray they will all be faithful in their decision making. Pray for BCA Staff in Transition Mr Ran & Mrs Jenny Mitchell We give thanks for the wonderful prayer support we receive through BCA. We ask that as this year progresses, more people will come to know of Jesus and accept Him into their lives. Give thanks for the support given to Boggabilla Parish, and thank God for the assistance of a locum for parts of the year. The Revd Peter and Mrs Joy Palmer Peter is now rector of St George s Beenleigh in southern Brisbane. He still has contact with hundreds of miners by phone and through Facebook. Pray that these friendships will continue to bear fruit for God s Kingdom. He has also been elected to the BCA Committee for Qld/Nth NSW. Pray for Peter as he adjusts to parish ministry and that Joy will find her niche in this parish. Give thanks for the warm welcome that they have received. 54

55 Pray for BCA Staff in Transition The Revd Barry & Mrs Avril Luke Praise our Lord for a safe move from Roxby Downs to Cummins and the warm welcome we have received. Pray that we will boldly proclaim, through word and action, the saving love of Jesus. Pray for wisdom to know what to be involved in within the community and for safe travel. Mrs Robyn Williams The last few months have been challenging but I have experienced God s guidance and provision in many ways. I give thanks for the opportunity for refreshment and time to catch up with family and friends. I give thanks too for the opportunity to volunteer in a pastoral care role at ARV villages. And I am so thankful for those God has given me who are experienced in de-cluttering, the trades and real estate. Please continue to pray for perseverance, godly wisdom and encouragement for the many decisions I still face. Pray that all things come together in His timing for His glory. Mrs Vika Webb I have settled in well into my role at Nepean Hospital and the shorter commute has been amazing. Grant and I have been married for a year now and I pray that God strengthens our love for Him and for each other. We thank the BCA family for the love and prayers and we will continue to pray for the work of BCA. Ms Jen Schabel I am working as a Christian SRE coordinator in two high schools in Goulburn, a position which is supported by 10 local churches. It is the first time these schools have had SRE or Scripture Union ISCF groups for many years. I am teaching over two hundred students across both schools. Please thank God for these opportunities and pray for developing relationships with the schools and students. I ask for your prayers for our combined churches youth group FUELgoulburn and for new members who have joined. I would also value your prayers for a new Christian conservation organisation called A Rocha Australia of which I am a director. 55

56 Pray for BCA Staff in Transition The Revd Mary and Dr Owen Lewis We have moved to Port Pirie, leaving our current partnership with BCA and taking up the parish of Flinders Plain and the position of Dean of the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul. Owen will find medical and musical work in the area. What adventures God has in store for us and his people in Pt Pirie. Thank you for your prayers and support over the past seven years. It is such a privilege to be a member of a mission society where one is supported daily by prayer and gifts for growing the Kingdom. We are very sad to leave this special family but commit to continuing to support BCA in serving the gospel. Lindsay and Carolyn Whybrow Lindsay has spent the last few months in the spinal unit of Prince of Wales Hospital following an accident at home in February. Praise God that Lindsay has regained some use of his left leg and has been able to stand with help. He also has some limited use of his fingers, but please pray that the healing would continue in his hands and body. Lindsay is set to be discharged in late. Please pray their house in Springwood will be sold for a good price, and they will have been able to finalise the purchase of their new home at Uralla which is nearby their daughter and grandchildren. Lindsay and Carolyn have appreciated visits and phone calls and thank everyone for their prayers. They hope, God willing, to return to Hillston in the future for a proper farewell. 56

58 Positions Vacant King Island Exciting Pastoral Ministry The Bush Church Aid Society and the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania are seeking an ordained minister with a proven track record in mission to serve on this scenic Bass Strait island. The King Island congregation is one of friendship, unity and harmony. The different denominations actively cooperate and support several lively bible study groups across the Island. You will be responsible for pastoring to this congregation and working alongside them to reach a diverse community with the gospel of Christ. As the only full-time Christian minister on the Island you will play a significant role in civic and ecumenical affairs. The church itself is a modern, attractive building with an adjacent hall that is used extensively by church and community groups. The complex includes a rectory, has ample parking and is within walking distance of Currie s CBD. The Rectory has four bedrooms and was recently repainted and re-carpeted. It is in safe walking distance to the local school (which caters up to year 10) making this position suitable for either a young or more mature family. A full stipend, well-equipped rectory and motor vehicle are provided and BCA will cover the cost of regular travel to and from the Island.
