1 spring 2017 Prayer Notes Reaching Australia for Christ since 1919

2 The Bush Church Aid Society The Bush Church Aid Society has a heart for people living in remote and regional Australia. We are committed to going the distance to reach Australia for Christ. Under God, we do this by proclaiming Christ so that people may respond to Him; nurturing Christians in their faith and ministry; strengthening local Christian communities in their mission; providing services of Christian care and advocacy; developing an understanding of Christ s mission and promoting active partnership throughout the church. Our core commitments are relying on prayer for God s help and the Holy Spirit s guidance; trusting in the vision, authority and encouragement of Scripture; working in humility, servanthood and fellowship with the church in mission; developing interdependent relationships with Diocesan Bishops; providing pastoral care and professional development for staff and responsibly managing our resources. Front cover: Taken by The Revd Peter Adkins at Noonaweena Retreat, Kulnura NSW

6 Editorial I recently had the privilege of participating in the BCA National Council for the first time. It was daunting, inspiring and encouraging all at the same time! As we worked our way through Field Staff reports, I was overwhelmed by how difficult ministry is in many parts of our country. Social and spiritual problems created by distance, unemployment, transience, addictions, brokenness and human sinfulness appear overwhelming. From a human point of view, there is a sense in which BCA Field Staff attempt the impossible as they seek to make Christ known in the rural and remote regions of our land. Nonetheless, I was inspired and encouraged by their faithful service and endurance as they strive to reach Australia for Christ. The Apostle Paul writes to Philemon, thanking God because he had heard about Philemon s love for the Lord s people and his faith in our Lord Jesus. Paul expresses in Philemon 7 what many of us experience as we look on and see what Christ is doing through those serving in His name: Your love has given me boundless joy and encouragement, because you have refreshed the hearts of the Lord s people. As you pray through these notes, I trust you experience similar joy and encouragement, being inspired by the love and faith of those for whom we pray. In Philemon 6, Paul explains that gospel partnership helps us grasp more profoundly the riches of what we have in Christ. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. So, while we may be tempted to think that God is using these prayer notes simply to prompt and direct us in prayer, He is also using them to deeply shape us as well. BCA is committed to going the distance to reach Australia for Christ. Our faith in Christ compels us. As we use these notes, reflect on what others are doing in serving Christ and making Him known. May the character of our own faith and discipleship be challenged. How far will we go to reach Australia for Christ? The Revd Rod Morris National Councillor

The WA Regional Officer serves Christ and Bush Church Aid across Western Australia. The Revd Rob Healy visits churches and speaks about BCA in the Diocese of Perth, Bunbury and North-West Australia. 11 3 Exmouth The Revd Frank & Mrs Jo Nicol Lydia (2011) Eli (2013) PO Box 542 Exmouth WA 6707 Phone The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2 You cannot have a baby in Exmouth, so Jo and Eli leave town early this month to wait in Perth for four weeks. Please pray that God gives Jo a time of relaxation as she prepares to give birth. Lydia and Frank will travel down later this month. Bill and Jackie France will look after the church this month. Pray that they reunite quickly with the people of Exmouth and that God uses them to build up believers. Our baby is due on 5. Please pray for a safe delivery. Plans will be made for Carols this month. Pray that those plans glorify God and that we boldly make the most of the gospel opportunity Carols provides. Please pray for some Sunday school teachers while Jo is unable to serve in this area. Exmouth turns 50 years old in. The town is planning to celebrate its colourful history. People from all over the world, including many American soldiers, will return to the place they once called home. I pray that as we celebrate, the town s motto In God we Trust will be remembered. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson

12 4 Kununurra The Revd Daniel & Mrs Rebecca Faricy Rachael (2013) Jessica (2015) PO Box 117 Kununurra WA 6743 Phone He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28 Give thanks for the relationships we are building as we settle into ministry in Kununurra. Pray that God would give us wisdom as we continue to learn about the culture of this town. Pray that as we prepare for Christmas we would have boldness to make the most of every opportunity to share the good news of Jesus. Kununurra is a magnificent part of God s creation with many beautiful sites to visit and things to see. It is surrounded by irrigated farm land with an abundance of fresh water. Farming is a fastgrowing industry in our region along with tourism and mining. St James Kununurra meets at 9:30am. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson

Pray that they will not be disheartened and that the Lord will add to their number. Pray for the congregation as we make plans for our Christmas services and outreach in the community. May we present the true meaning of Christmas to those who don t yet know Jesus. Newman is a mining town in the heart of the Pilbara, located inland about 450 kilometres south-east of Port Hedland. It has a population of around 3000 people and an additional fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workforce of around 800. It is a very young and multicultural town of high salaries and long working hours. There is also a high turnover of locals and FIFO workers. As Newman is quite isolated from surrounding towns, there is a real sense of community here. 18 7 Wickham The Revd Richard & Mrs Tracy Goscombe 33 Herbert Way Wickham WA 6720 Mobile Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven on earth by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 In the midst of a severe downturn that has seen so many have to leave the North West, give thanks that through BCA, gospel ministry in the remote Pilbara region is sustained. It is a powerful statement that the Lord (and the hope He provides) has not left. Give thanks for the establishment of Wickham Community Projects (WCP) alongside the chaplaincy ministry. WCP will provide a stepping stone out of dysfunction through development of a workshop, creative arts studio, gardens and life-skills training.
