1 The Voice of Holy Trinity September Since the kingdom of God is not just words, it is power. 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL 3131 NE Glisan St., Portland, Oregon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A New Beginning We have established certain dates to help us make new beginnings in our lives. September 1 is the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. We pray to God in gratitude and thank Him for all the blessings we have received throughout the previous year. We ask Him in our prayers to bless the new church year with His Heavenly benediction and enable us to do His Holy Will. The new school year also starts in September. We send our children to school to learn all that we have achieved as a civilized society. The teachers will strive to help them develop their talents and reach their potential. They will prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow. The Latin word educo, from which education comes, means to lead someone. The Greek word paedagogo, (lead a child) is even more precise in its meaning. Scholeion, school, is a place where we take our children to learn in a relaxed atmosphere, away from the pressure of the outside world. Finally the Greek word ekpaedevsis, the process of educating, gives us an insight into the true meaning of education. It literally means to take the childish things out of the child, to remove the irrational and replace it with reason and rationality. Saint Paul referred to this aspect of Christian education and growth when he called upon the Galatians to leave behind the childish things and live as mature Christians. Thus our purpose in education is to weed out all the bad habits in the children and replace them with good habits. To put it simply, our goal is to create good character in them and enable them to use the knowledge of our civilization for good and not for evil. For as Plato said long ago, knowledge divorced from virtue becomes craftiness. As our children are enrolled in Sunday School, we teach them our precious Orthodox Christian Faith: Who God is, what He has done for us, and how we can live and experience it in our lives and share it with the people around us. Our secular education prepares us for this life. But our religious education gives meaning to our earthly lives and prepares us also for everlasting life. As you can see, the stakes of our religious education are very high. As parents and teachers we have a great responsibility toward our children. God commended us in the Bible to teach our children and share with them the gracious acts He has accomplished for us. Our parish provides dedicated teachers and attractive materials and classrooms for our children. But we need ALL our children to attend. As parents, we have the sacred responsibility to bring our children to Church on time and to participate in the Divine Liturgy as families. We should consider nothing more than the spiritual training of our children. God places our worship of Him next to the First Commandment, our acknowledging Him as our Lord. Whatever takes the place of God or our worship of Him is idolatrous. All His children (adults and children) belong in church on Sunday. Parents, Godparents, Grandparents, and all other adults are God s assistants. We are called to guide our children to God! Let us bring our children to God s Church! Fr. John Angelis

Greek Open Golf Tournament Dinner & Silent Auction September 22, 2014 Langdon Farms Golf Club For more information, visit - holding fast to our mission of philanthropy and service locally and throughout the world Camp Agape: witnessing the unconditional love of Christ Philoptochos 19 th annual Camp Agape was held at beautiful Camp Angelos, August 2 7. Philoptochos was, once again, privileged to host families who seek rest and sustenance as they face the challenge of a lifetime - helping their child battle cancer. The beautiful weather and surroundings were the perfect complement to days filled with activities, fellowship, reflection and nurturing meals all prepared and executed by the loving hands of Philoptochos volunteers. During our days together, many new friendships were forged along with renewed relationships from previous years. The children thrived and interacted beautifully, enjoying some time away from adults, under the loving care of our Holy Trinity teens who served as Buddies. We offer an edited excerpt, below, from a letter received from one of our Camp Agape mothers, as she reflects on the word, agape. many years ago, I took a class where we learned of the different kinds of love. Eros and philia were easy to grasp because I had experienced these loves. The most abstract and hard to understand, was the concept of agape. As we have heard many times at Camp Agape, agape love is an unconditional love, but it goes far beyond that.agape love is a perfect love; it is a selfless love giving of oneself completely without an expectation of getting anything in return. This true, pure, untainted love is not possible in our human sinful state. The only one capable of achieving this kind of love is Christ. It is only when we allow His love to work through us that we are able to show a glimmer of this kind of love to others. It is this love that radiates through this camp. I see it a million different ways throughout the week. I see the kitchen staff always going above and beyond to make sure we are comfortable and have enough; spa day where we are pampered and can take a minute to get the haircut we have had to put off; the planning that has gone into having so many groups come to demonstrate things or share projects; the art ladies who patiently help and teach us; the Buddies who pour so much of themselves into the kids and give Moms and Dads a much needed break. In big and small ways, you give us an amazing week where we get to take a break from caring for those around us and get to be cared for. I am so grateful for everyone here and for how they have touched our lives.. Thank you for the chance to begin to heal and walk along the path to wholeness. Thank you for allowing a theoretical concept I learned about many years ago come to reality in my life. When I see the word agape, I no longer think of an abstract concept. I see you with your always smiling faces serving and loving in a way that is not humanly possible. Upcoming Philoptochos Board meetings are the first Tuesday of the month in the Annex (unless otherwise announced); September 2 nd, October 7 th, November 4 th, December 2 nd Visit the Philoptochos table at the Parish Fair on September 7 th (Philoptochos members, pick up an extra copy of our Directory for only $1)

6 NEW SUPPLEMENTAL ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CLASS BEGINS OCT Fall Adult Christian Education at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Jesus Christ, Truly God and Truly Man The Great and Holy Ecumenical Councils Part II: Contantinople II, Constantinople III, Quinisext, and Nicaea II Since New Testament times the Church has defined faith and sacraments, organized scripture, resolved disputes, structured hierarchy, and faced obstacles and opportunities by means of councils small and large. From the time Paul and James confronted each other in Jerusalem over the issue of Jewish practices remaining Christian requirements, local, regional, and world-wide ("ecumenical") councils have been the regulating tool of the Church. Sobornost ("councilarity") makes the Church what it is. No patriarch, pope, emperor, or congregation alone can rule on matters of faith and order. Only a Great and Holy Ecumenical Council of Christendom's bishops, accepted by the whole Church, can make such decrees. Traditionally called by and presided over by the emperor, and guided by the Holy Spirit, such great councils are the Church's highest earthly authority. Only seven such Great Councils have occured. This class will focus on the last three of the seven, plus the Quinisext Council and subsequent statements of doctrine known as "Symbolic Books." We will study their history and read together their canons and statements of faith and order.
