1 The Voice of Holy Trinity March Since the kingdom of God is not just words, it is power. 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL 3131 NE Glisan St., Portland, Oregon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Parishioners and Friends, This month the Church provides many opportunities for our spiritual development as we enter into Great Lent. The hymns often compare this season to an athletic contest. We frequently hear that to be a good athlete we need good core strength. The core strength of Orthodox Christians is our worship and the deep spiritual tradition from which we can draw. In a very real way, if we participate fully in Lent, we will develop our core strength which will give us a great advantage in the various struggles and contests that we are challenged with in our daily lives. Great Lent teaches us to discipline ourselves and to be mindful of keeping our priorities straight. Life has a way of overwhelming us and time has a way of passing us by. If we are not careful we drift away from God and the dreams that we had finding ourselves living a life of quiet desperation. This can happen gradually and we don t realize how far we are away from our Lord and His plan for us until one day we wake up and wonder how we wondered so far astray. All of us, if we are honest, have something of the Prodigal Son within us. Great Lent is a time of repentance and a time of return. The prayers, fasting and disciplines of this season sharpen our dulled spiritual senses and awaken us to our true calling. Like the Prodigal we begin the journey back into the loving arms of our Father. Returning to the embrace of our Father and having developed our spiritual core we can meet the challenges of life with His blessing and divine guidance. Our lives can get back on course and our hearts will be refreshed knowing that we have find our sense of purpose and a renewed vocation. Does it sound like Great Lent is just what the doctor ordered for you? Our Church is where we come for healing, so please join us at Holy Trinity Cathedral for the various services and offerings this Lenten season. I wish you a blessed spiritual journey! 3 Graceful Journey is a new ministry of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Our vision is to be a resource, provide support and awareness of the issues of adult aging. We envision this ministry overlapping with other HTGOC ministry s such as; the visitations, Golden Age seniors group, men s ministry and others. In the January Dynamis Graceful Journey included a survey. This survey is designed to help our new ministry address the issues and concerns most important to members of our community and is completely anonymous. We encourage you to participate! There are two ways you can participate in the survey. 1) Go to the following link and complete the survey online. This is the most efficient way to complete the survey. 2) Complete the enclosed paper copy, and return to the office to be included in the tally. Note: Due to the recent weather developments the free hearing test schedule for January 11 th through a research project with the VA National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research will be rescheduled to February 14 th (before and after the Seniors Valentin s Day luncheon) Please take a moment to read the following article, The 7 Dimensions of Wellness written by Dianna Lawrence The 7 Dimensions of Wellness As believing Christians, it is essential to regularly do a selfcheck-up to exam each facet of our lives. Reflection upon our relationships with others, our obedience to the gospel, our physical and intellectual well-being is a fundamental part of our physical, emotional and spiritual growth and allows us to ask, Does my life reflect favorably upon my beliefs as a Christian? A today that is well-lived gives us a greater hope for what tomorrow will bring. Nourishing our mind, body and spirit can optimize our well-being as we age. Well-being is more than being free of illness and it is constantly changing as we continue to grow and make life choices. Active aging embodies the philosophy that we can live fully within the 7 dimensions of wellness. They offer a guideline for self-checkups and interact in such a way that provides a framework of meeting you where you are on your journey. Together, let s learn how to nourish our mind, body and spirit and optimize our wellness with the 7 dimensions of wellness! Environmental Wellness is: Understanding that our wellbeing is dependent on living in a healthy environment. One that is achieved by respecting resources, choosing green processes that re-use and recycle goods and practice healthful behaviors, and finding ways to spend time in natural environments. Emotional Wellness is: A strong sense of self-worth and the ability to be aware of and accept our emotions. Emotional wellness comes from coping with challenges and behaving in trustworthy and respectful ways, knowing our feelings are the lens through which we view the world. Intellectual Wellness is: Supporting a healthy and resilient brain by engaging in creative pursuits and intellectually stimulating activities. A proven approach to sustaining and improving brain health is to give your brain a reason to function-continue to learn new things, keep it alert and challenged. It thrives on regular participation in challenging efforts. Physical Wellness is: Making healthy lifestyle choices to maintain or improve health and function through physical activity, good nutrition, quality sleep and stress management. The goal of living independently is one shared by many people, and physical wellness is necessary to achieve this. Occupational Wellness is: Live a life of purpose and fulfillment by utilizing our unique skills and passions. Cultivate personal satisfaction from sharing them. The desire to contribute in making a positive impact on society, our community and others leads to occupational well-being. Social Wellness is: Knowledge that as we create and maintain healthy relationships, engage in positive interactions, and feel connected to your community, it has a protective influence on overall health. Understand the importance of regular social interactions with friends, peer groups, community. Spiritual Wellness is: Live with meaning and purpose in life, guided by personal values. The continuation of our spiritual journey in ways that best enhance our lives and holistic health. Ways in which we can improve our wellness: Emotional: Develop and maintain fulfilling relationships. Cope with stress and tension. Practice optimism, humor, laughter. Offer and receive support from others in our community. Environmental: Encourage active living within the natural environment. Protect the environment-garden, compost, purchase recycled items, limit use of non-biodegradable items. Create stress-free and healthy environments. Lead by example.

4 Intellectual: Learn a new skill, language, instrument. Attend lectures, plays, museums. Take a different route to familiar places. Stay abreast of current issues and engage in intellectual discussions with others. Occupational: Mentoring, teaching, caregiving, volunteering, leisure time vocations such as hobbies to maintain passions and skills. Physical: Lifestyle choices that include consistent physical activity, choose nourishing foods, keep medical appointments, follow medical recommendations. Social: Join clubs, ministries, visit friends and family. Engage in intergenerational experiences. Spiritual: Individual or group faith-based activities, personal reflection, meditation, prayer. Private or corporate worship, participation in the sacraments, offering the Lord s Prayer. How will you nourish yourself today? We do our best when we follow the example of St Paul and recognize the need for a self-check-up. He says we never achieve perfection. It is a process that begins with life and continues into eternity. Meet yourself where you are on your journey by asking, Is it time to check up on self? Save the Date! Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 4, 2017 when our Hellenic- American Cultural Center & Museum will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a GALA event including a Live and Silent Auction. Watch the Dynamis and the Sunday bulletins for more information about this event. Various exhibits and programs are being planned throughout the year to celebrate this milestone for our museum Philoptochos Membership Just a reminder to our Philoptochos members. Please send in your 2017 Philoptochos dues as soon as you can. Your support has enabled our community to hold fast to Holy Trinity s Philoptochos tradition of Philanthropy and to meet the challenges of those in need of our help and service. We will continue to serve as the right arm of the church by helping to manage the needs of the less fortunate. Our service includes many other needs such as senior activities, shut-in visitations, educational programs, emergency assistance and many other ministries. Please take a moment and fill out your Philoptochos membership envelope (included in your January Dynamis). And while you re at it please consider increasing your fairshare. Just remember, we can t do it without YOU! Thank you to all of our members for your support and service. Please do not hesitate to contact Membership Chair, Kathy Melcher melchgka@hotmail.com with questions or if you would like help in joining a Philoptochos circle. Editor s note: In the January 2017 of Dynamis, Sophia Kriara s name was inadvertently left off the list of Philoptochos members. We apologize for the error.

5 A Weekend of Service, Spiritual Growth & Fellowship Members of our Men s Ministry journeyed to the St John the Forerunner Monastery in Goldendale Washington, the weekend of November 12th. Although the Sisters are tremendously self-reliant, they appreciated our helping hands with a variety of maintenance and repair projects. It was a weekend of many unexpected blessings. There was new found comradery among the men nurtured by teamwork. They felt fulfilled accomplishing the muchneeded work. It was a great blessing of observe the Sisters gracefully carrying out their daily work to sustain the life that takes in this beautiful setting. The Sisters angelic voices chanting the was so spiritually uplifting. Watching young families with their children venerating the beautiful icons added even more to our experience. Vik Tymchenko and George Papas seeking an everincreasing personal relationship with God on their way to. It was a foggy, but beautiful morning just after day break. Vik is on the left and George on the right. If you look closely, their destination, is the beautiful monastery cathedral in the distance. One of the Sisters providing the what and how instructions to Kris Souza, Vik Tymchenko and Scott Taylor for the hay shelter. She was an amazing young woman in her late twenties. She was not Greek, but spoke it perfectly in conversation with Christos Efthimiadis. She had all his animat3ed Greek mannerisms and then some. She was such a sweet young woman who worked hand in hand with all of us. Christos Efthimiades and Scott Taylor making sure the hay stays dry for feeding the goats during the cold winter months. This very large shelter was the main project completed for the Sisters. It took some great engineering know how and the necessary Greek style style arguing to complete the job properly. Nick Mallos and Christos having John Lampros Steve Phoutrides and Nick Gianopoulos using their engineering Know How to complete maintenance on the road and culverts that lead to the cathedral.

6 $550, STEWARDSHIP GOAL ACHIEVED! A Record Increase! Thank you for the faithful sharing of your blessings for Holy Trinity. We surpassed 2015's stewardship by approximately $50,000! A review shows 25 parishioners made substantially larger gifts than 2015 and 150 generous parishioners also increased their support that's 30% of our stewards stepping up. All of you raised us closer to meeting the demands of our vibrant parish, including the goal of hiring of an assistant priest. The suggested step up increase of 10% (or a suggested minimum of $500) will appear on all parishioner pledge cards again this year. All together, "όλοι μαζί," we have cultivated this noble ethos of shared blessings. We look forward with confidence to our 2017 stewardship goal of $600,000. Holy Trinity Cathedral's 600 households will proudly achieve it! In Christ s Love, John Lampros Stewardship Ministry
