1 Lay & Clergy January July 2010 Training & Formation
2 spirituality days A Quiet Day for Lent: The Colour Purple Led by Rev Canon Dr Peter Lippiett. Spielberg made Alice Walker s novel The Color Purple into a major film 20 years ago, with Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey Things is gonna be changin around here Apart from its title, this day of quiet reflection as Lent begins has nothing to do with the film except for that quotation. Purple is the colour of royalty and kingship; of wine and celebration, of spilt blood. Lent turns our thinking to the cross and so changes our notions of power, of how, what and why we celebrate, of life and death. Three talks will help us explore these themes during the day, and the silence of the day can perhaps offer an opportunity to look within ourselves at what needs to be changin round here A chance to start Lent with some peace and quiet, taking stock of where we are now, and considering how god may be moving us on. The day will end with a Eucharist. Date: Saturday 20th February 2010 Venue: Newport Minster, Isle of Wight Time: 10am 3.30pm Cost: 7.50 Diocesan Passiontide Quiet afternoon: Form us in to the likeness of Christ Led by Bishop Ian Brackley Continuing our tradition of diocesan preparation for Holy Week, Bishop Ian will give two addresses looking at ourselves as those for whom Christ gave his body and blood in the Eucharist and on the Cross. There will be periods of silence and opportunity to reflect on the addresses and the issues they raise. Some additional material will also be available to aid thinking and meditation. Date: Saturday 27th March 2010 Venue: St Thomas Cathedral, Old Portsmouth Time: 2pm 5pm Be Still Day Led by Stefan Smart with the Diocesan Spirituality Team A drop-in quiet day for personal reflection and meditation with a variety of optional exercises drawing on the teachings of Jesus and the Christian mystics. Among the activities on offer will be a labyrinth, a prayer and movement workshop, audiovisual led meditations, Taizé prayer, speed spiritual direction, services, a creative zone, and a plethora of prayer activities using the senses, stillness, the imagination and readings. People are free to drop in for as little or as long as they want perhaps a good break from the Saturday shopping! Date:Saturday 17th April 2010 Venue: St Thomas Cathedral, Old Portsmouth Time: 10am 3.30pm
3 spirituality days Silence: An impossible ideal? Led by Rev Barbara Mosse In a world (and church!) of increasing activity and busyness, the deep truth enshrined in the words be still, and know that I am God seems everharder to experience as a lived reality. The desire is there both within the Church and beyond its boundaries, as the huge growth of the retreat movement and the appeal of television programmes such as The Monastery make clear. Using times for personal reflection and group sharing, periods of silent meditation and shared worship, this day aims to confront the dilemma we face: how do we respond with integrity and courage to our deep yearning for God as members of a society that glories in noisy superficiality? Date: Saturday 22nd May 2010 Venue: Newport Minster, Isle of Wight Time: 10am 3.30pm Cost: 7.50 Ancient Future Led by Simon McMurtary, Harriet Lea-Banks, Ben Mizen and The Ven. Caroline Baston This is a day to explore how some of the ancient spiritual practices such as 24 hour prayer, labyrinths, prayerful reflection on scripture (Lectio Divina), icons, prophetic voices have re emerged in today s multimedia world. There will be silence, space to reflect and the opportunity to practice what we explore. Date: Saturday 26th June 2010 Venue: Newport Minster, Isle of Wight Time: 10am 3.30pm Cost: 7.50 Silence: An impossible ideal? 4 spirituality days cont.. The Enneagram - What s it worth? Led by Simon Parke The Enneagram offers a uniquely complete map of the psychological forces in us both the healthy and the destructive. There is no aspect of life it doesn t touch on. As with all truth, its honesty is only for the courageous. But should courage be found in you, you in turn will find the Enneagram a great friend. This day in the cathedral will be given over to consideration of the Enneagram, in its various aspects and applications. Bring your questions and discoveries. It is a day both for those who know nothing, and for those who know something. No knowledge will be assumed; but all knowledge will be welcomed, deepened and stretched. Time spent by you in preparation for the day will not be time wasted. We will each bring what we can; and carry away gold. Date: Saturday 18th September 2010 Venue: Cathedral House, Old Portsmouth Time: 10am 3.30pm Cost: 7.50 What is Mysticism Led by Patrick Moore Here s a day to explore what mysticism means. It will outline the mystical tradition in the Western Church, focussing on that great 14th century English classic prayer The Cloud of Unknowing. We will then compare this with the contemplative tradition articulated by Gregory the Great in the early church and the monk Thomas Merton in the 20th century. The day will include prayer and reflection time, and guided meditation. Date: Saturday 16th October 2010 Venue: St Thomas Cathedral, Old Portsmouth Time: 10am 3.30pm Cost: 7.50 Saver Season Ticket We are now offering a Saver Season Ticket for 30. This will allow you access to all of the Spirituality Days at no further cost. To take advantage of this please send a 30 cheque to Mrs. Kay Lancaster.
