3 Learning in Faith 2019 Introduction Welcome Jesus calls each and every one of us to be his disciples. The word disciple comes from a Greek word meaning apprentice or learner. So Jesus calls us all to be life-long learners. Learning in Faith does what it says on the tin. It offers us all, whether lay or ordained, lots of opportunities to grow in our Christian life and witness and, together with others, to become more confident disciples. You don t need me to tell you that we live in a fast changing and increasingly sceptical world. If we want to see our churches flourish and grow, we ALL need to be ready to meet these challenges. St Paul encouraged Timothy to be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:17). I m sure that applies to each of us too. With well over 100 different training opportunities planned for 2019, ranging from how to work with children in church through to sharing your faith in the workplace, I can guarantee there will be a course here that you will find interesting, stimulating and enjoyable even if you haven t been involved in learning like this before now. What, I wonder, might our Diocese look like in a year s time if every one of us committed ourselves to attending at least one of these excellent opportunities? If you do, I can guarantee that you will learn a great deal, grow in your faith and be surprised at how much you also have to share with others. May God bless you richly as you grow as a disciple of Jesus in The Rt Revd Jan McFarlane Bishop of Repton and Acting Bishop of Derby Learning in the Diocese of Derby There is a great emphasis in the Church of England on Setting God s people free ; so often it s our lack of knowledge and confidence that holds us back and limits the freedom God wills for us to serve Him fully in the world. The Diocesan Mission & Ministry team is fully committed to helping every member grow in their understanding and experience of faith so that each of us can more confidently engage in our communities and serve a world so desperately in need of God s Good News. To support what happens in our parish churches, the Diocese has recently adopted a new multi-tier approach to coaching. Tier one learning [this programme] offers a broad and varied series of stand-alone or shortcourse opportunities that are suitable for anyone to come along and enjoy. Whether it s because you already have an interest in a particular area and want a refresher or would like to gain some new ideas, or if you re just interested to see what s being said, then these sessions are for you. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Tier two learning [Derby Discipleship Programme] is currently under development but will offer a deeper examination of life and faith over a longer period. Tier three learning [Certificate in Theology, Mission & Ministry] is geared towards those training for licensed ministries (Readers or Ordinands), but is currently open to all learners. It is a University of Durham certificate course provided by All Saints Centre for Mission & Ministry but delivered by our local delivery team of trainers. This course offers a deep, more academic exploration of key Christian themes and concepts and is used to help shape the next generation of lay and ordained thinkers and theologians. I hope that you can spot the right place for you to grow amongst all that we have to offer as a Diocese, and, as you do, my prayer is that you will go for it and you will know what it is to be God s people set free! 4 Learning in Faith 2019 Mission, Evangelism & Discipleship Living Our Faith and Sharing It with Others Talking Faith for Ordinary People 26 Jan 16 Feb Sat 26 Jan 10am-1pm, The Church on Oakwood Sat 16 Feb 10am-1pm, St Helen, Darley Dale The Bible tells us, Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. Yet, sharing our faith story with those outside the church can be a daunting prospect. This workshop is designed to remove the fear from sharing our faith story and give some practical thoughts and ideas of how we can do so more effectively. 12 Feb 20 Feb Everybody Welcome: Welcoming & Integrating Newcomers into the Church Tue 12 Feb 7pm-9pm, Church House Wed 20 Feb 7pm-9pm, St Helen, Darley Dale Almost every church will tell you that they are welcoming-and yet, typically only around 10% of people who try a church will join. Bob Jackson writes, True welcome is about active encouragement into the heart of the community of the church, and its job is not done until someone is completely at home, a valued, contributing member of the Body of Christ. This workshop looks at various aspects of a church s welcome and introduces tools to help churches become truly welcoming. 13 Mar 19 Mar Flourishing Church: Seeking Health & Growth in Your Church Wed 13 Mar 7pm-9pm, St Nicholas, Allestree Tue 19 Mar 7pm-9pm, St Barnabas, Danesmoor We long for our churches to flourish and grow- but how do we enable that to happen as church leaders? This workshop is designed for small groups of both lay and ordained leaders in a church to attend together and, by looking at the purpose and character God calls his church to have and introducing further tools and resources, helps them to consider how they can lead their churches into health and growth. 4

5 06 Apr 13 Apr Sharing the Good News: Effective Evangelism for the Local Church Sat 06 Apr 10am-1pm, St John Institute, Tideswell Sat 13 Apr 10am-1pm, The Church on Oakwood Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved, but Paul reminds us that in order for someone to respond to the Good News, the church must proclaim it to them (Rom 10 : ). This is evangelism, and it is at the heart of our calling as the church. But how can we do that effectively, sensitively and appropriately in our culture today? This workshop helps small groups of lay and ordained church leaders together to answer that question. 04 Mar 16 May Fresh Expressions 1: Getting Started with Fresh Expressions Mon 04 Mar 7pm-9pm, St Andrew, Swanwick Thu 16 May 7pm-9pm, Holy Trinity, Mapperley Starting a fresh expression can seem complicated and difficult for many churches- and yet, it need not be. This workshop gives some practical advice and ideas about how to get started with fresh expressions, without assuming any previous knowledge or experience. It introduces the idea of fresh expressions, explores why we should consider using them and leads people in some simple steps to start their fresh expressions journey. 08 Jul 15 Jul Fresh Expressions 2: Growing Disciples in Fresh Expressions Mon 08 Jul 7pm-9pm, St Thomas, Brampton Mon 15 Jul 7pm-9pm, Holy Trinity, Mapperley This workshop is designed for those churches that already have a fresh expression but want to move to the next stage with it. The workshop focuses on two particular areas; making and growing disciples within your fresh expression and growing your fresh expression by replicating it. Although it follows on from Fresh Expressions 1, the workshop doesn t assume that you have attended this first. Booking for all courses: address here Phone

7 05 Oct 19 Oct Planting New Congregations Sat 05 Oct 10am-4pm, All Saints, Marlpool Sat 19 Oct 10am-4pm, St Thomas, Brampton Throughout church history, one of the most effective ways for the church to grow has been through planting- creating new churches and congregations from existing ones. This day-long workshop helps churches to prayerfully consider, without assuming any knowledge or experience, their own way forward with God in this exciting way of growing His Kingdom. 22 May 23 Oct Being a More Inclusive Church Wed 22 May 7pm-9pm, Church House Wed 23 Oct 7pm-9pm St Helen, Darley Dale Drawing the circle wider... and wider - this workshop will explore why the principles of inclusion are central to the mission of the church. Inclusion is actually a very simple concept of enthusing all that we do with a deep desire to bring all into the love of Christ and speak the word of God afresh to our generation. We will look at how relatively small changes can help the local church engage in radical hospitality and radically refocus mission for growth. This is a practical workshop for those interested in exploring issues of inclusion in areas like disability, addiction, mental health, gender, age, sexuality and poverty; it will also introduce the work of the educational charity Inclusive Church. Together we ll try to discern the difference between being a welcoming church and being an inclusive church and why that is important. These sessions are open to all but spaces are limited, so please pre-book. 02 Nov 23 Nov Come & See: Creating a Culture of Invitation in Your Church Sat 02 Nov 10am-1pm, St Thomas, Derby Sat 23 Nov 10am-1pm, St Helen, Darley Dale Jesus invited Andrew to come and see, and Andrew, in turn, invited his brother Simon. Philip invited Nathaniel to come and see Jesus. Our churches may have heartfelt worship, wonderful teaching and amazing programmes, but without that simple invitation, no one will ever experience them. This workshop will help churches develop a culture of invitation that is key to all they do. Booking for all courses: address here Phone

25 Good to Go Sharing the Good News This single-document resource is a valuable guide for clergy and PCCs to reflect together on how they can be effective in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ in ways that are relevant, appropriate, sensitive and effective in our modern culture. The resource is based on its companion workshop, Sharing the Good News, and looks at such topics as helping the church into evangelism, making contact with those outside the church, how people come to faith and measuring success in evangelism. Sharing the Good News is available for free download as a part of the MAP for Derby Diocese resource toolkit. To download, visit the Diocesan website under Training. Good to Go Faith Pictures Developed by the Church Army and free to download on registration, this six-part course helps Christians talk naturally to friends, neighbours and colleagues about what they believe. The heart of the course is about helping people to identify a single picture or image that embodies something of their faith. The course aims to be accessible and light-hearted, without jargon or inflexible methods. It has a number of emphases not always found in faithsharing courses, including the avoidance of one-size-fits-all models and the importance of honesty and listening. Each session contains a short video and encourages discussion in pairs and as a whole group. For more information and to register, visit churcharmy.org or access via the link under Training on the Diocesan website. Good to Go Mission Shaped Introduction Mission Shaped Introduction (MSI) is an ideal next step for church clergy and PCCs after the Fresh Expressions 1: Getting Started with Fresh Expressions workshop. MSI helps people to reconnect with the communities they are called to serve and to re-imagine the forms of church that are needed for the 21st century. It takes you on a creative and reflective journey looking at the need for new ways of being church. Two versions of the course are available, either free to download (which requires some work in obtaining video clips) and as a complete DVD and course booklet. For more information and to download / purchase, go to freshexpressions.org.uk or access via the link under Training on the Diocesan website. 25

Good to Go Faith in Action Faith in Action: a Derbyshire Churches Guide to Community Mission (2008), Bates, Collishaw and Jordan. This guide was written and published in-house as a toolkit. It includes author and guest written resources on funding, environment + buildings and theology of community mission. All parishes were given a copy. Apply to Stella Collishaw (stella.collishaw@derby.anglican.org) or Mission and Ministry Team colleagues. 26
