2 The discipline of Lent. It s embarrassing sometimes when I really stop and take a look at the excuses I make for not doing things I know I should be doing. They are lame at best. What s puzzling is that these things I am avoiding have proven, time after time, actually to be a blessing. They make me feel better. They improve my health. They enhance my quality of life. So why do I avoid them? I wish I knew. During this Season of Lent we are going to be offering some Lenten Disciplines which we hope will help you grow in your faith and draw you closer to God and to your sisters and brothers in Christ. It would be easy to make all kinds of excuses for not engaging in one or more of these (believe me I know) but imagine yourself standing before Jesus and making your excuses. If he would be OK with them, no problem. Otherwise, make a decision of the will to set aside some time in Lent to grow. Maybe one of these will help. At Suntree Campus: Wednesdays in Lent: *5PM 6PM Soup and sandwich supper. *6PM 7PM Midweek evening prayer Journey through the sacred story. At Melbourne Beach Campus: Wednesdays in Lent: 1:30PM - 4PM - After School Program. 6PM - 7PM - Midweek Evening Prayer - Journey through the sacred story Off Campus on Wednesdays: 7:30PM - The Big Questions at Squid Lips in Eau Gallie (Invite your skeptical and seeking friends too!). Pastor Rick and I are both looking forward to a meaningful time of growth as we walk these 40 days of Lent together. Thanks for walking with us. On the journey with you, Here s what s on tap (*childcare provided): At both Campuses - Ash Wednesday Services at 1PM and *7PM Ashes and a prayer drive-through - 7AM - 9:30 AM (also 4PM-6PM in Suntree.) Prayer Labyrinth to walk at any time. 2
3 HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS Every season sponsors its own splash of decorations. Right now, stores are stocked up on cards, candies, hearts, and balloons that shout, Happy Valentine s Day! Love is in the air. Is that what Valentine s Day is about? You may be familiar with the backstory behind this Hallmark induced celebration. A variety of stories swirl around the truth of the real St. Valentine. It is likely that he lived in the 3rd century in Italy and that he was martyred on February 14th. The reason for his persecution and execution may have been his deep faith in Jesus. It is also mentioned that he sanctioned and performed Christian weddings in defiance of Emperor Claudius who preferred unmarried soldiers. St. Valentine s confidence in Christ and support of marriage earned him a reputation for devotion and love. It also led to his demise. Coincidently, this year St. Valentine s Day falls on Ash Wednesday, the traditional beginning of the season of Lent. You will probably not find a large section of your local Walmart sporting shelves of Lenten decorations; however, could there be a connection with Valentine s Day? The season of Lent is our ecclesiastical preparation for Easter. It is a time when we reflect on our earthly mortality, and our spiritual vitality. We all know that one day this life will come to an end, and at the same time we celebrate our promise in Christ that in Him we will live forever. Jesus explained this when he said, For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) During this season we often employ particular habits or disciplines to remind us of the reality of who we are and what Christ has done for us. Usually those practices are about sacrifice What will you give up for Lent? Perhaps we would be better served to think about service. I have an idea that may be helpful for you and your family. Once a week gather together. This may be just your family, or a group of friends, or maybe just a couple. Ask one another three questions. Who served you today? Whom did you serve today? How did God serve you today? My hope would be that this discipline would create in us a greater awareness of what is truly vital to our lives. What would be more significant for me today, that I didn t eat chocolate, or that I recalled loving acts of kindness and was inspired to do the same? May this holy day of remembrance, Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine s Day, stir us to greater acts of service. St. Valentine was a martyr and Christ sacrificed his life on our behalf. Both are signs of devotion and love. 3

7 FROM THE PRESCHOOL AT SUNTREE: Registration for the next school year will begin in February. We offer a 2-Day Class for two year olds, a 3-Day Class for three year olds and a 5-Day VPK Class. Call Chris at for more information. Our VPK Class is going to be building an igloo as a math project so we are now collecting empty, clean, white or clear gallon milk jugs. If you have any to donate, please drop them in the church office and we will collect them. Thanks! GRACE PRESCHOOL Grace Preschool raised over $800 in December with our Charity Ornament sales. Donations were made to the Master s Workshop in Melbourne and Genesis House. Thank you to all who purchased our handcrafted ornaments. In- house registrations for the 2018/2019 school year will be accepted starting February 16. Open registration begins on February 28. Angel Tree Gifts WHY DON'T WE USE ALLELUIAS DURING LENT? Based on the Hebrew word, hallelu yah, meaning Praise the Lord, alleluia has been a word of great praise to God in the life of the church and was prominent in early Christian liturgies. Because of the penitential character of the season of Lent in the Western church, singing or saying the word "alleluia" has historically been suspended during Lent's forty days. This period of individual and congregational reflection on the quality of our baptismal faith and life suggests that the joyful nature of alleluia is more appropriately reserved for our Easter celebrations when it is given full and jubilant voice. An alternate gospel acclamation for Lent that omits the alleluia is provided. The omission of alleluia during Lent goes back at least to the fifth century in the western church. The custom of actually bidding it farewell, however, developed in the Middle Ages. The hymn "Alleluia, song of gladness" (Evangelical Lutheran Worship #318) contains a translation of an 11th century Latin text that compares an alleluia-less Lent to the exile of the Israelites in Babylon. The text then anticipates the joy of Easter when glad alleluias will return in all their heavenly splendor. Alleluia is appropriately bid farewell on the Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday (the Transfiguration of Our Lord, also called the last Sunday after the Epiphany in the Lutheran liturgical calendar). This is the last Sunday when alleluia will be used until the Vigil of Easter, or Easter Sunday for those congregations not holding a Vigil. The burial of the alleluia could otherwise be the culminating activity at a congregational Carnival (also known as Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday) celebration just before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. 8 CHRISTIAN SERVICE Christian Service wrapped up our calendar year with a successful Angel Tree Campaign. We received a personal thank you and photos from Grace Place for our generous gifts and gift cards. We are taking a deep breath and discussing our future outreach. We will let you know when we come to a decision. MILITARY BIBLESTICK UPDATE A representative from Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH) called Jeanette Peterson to inform her that in December an anonymous donor matched all donations given to FCBH which meant that Advent provided 100 Biblesticks to service members. What a blessing! LUNCH BUNCH The Lunch Bunch will meet Wednesday, February 7th (note earlier date), at Meg O'Malley's, 812 E. New Haven, Melbourne, at 12:00 noon. We will sing at Sarah Care at 1:30 PM. The Grace preschool students are again making Valentine's for the Sarah Care clients. Please sign the sheet on the bulletin board in the Narthex, or call Gary. The Melbourne Beach Lunch Bunch at Shells restaurant in January. 8 MELBOURNE BEACH MEN'S BREAKFAST & BIBLE STUDY Men's Breakfast & Bible Study will meet Thursdays, February 1st & 15th at 7:30 AM.
