Allow their minds to be informed and broadened, their hopes to be inspired and strengthened, and their vision to be filled with promise and possibility, as they grow in knowledge and wisdom through Scouting. May they learn more about You and Your ways through the teaching and example of their leaders. May all their efforts guide each of them to know, to love, and to serve You now, and throughout their lives. We ask this blessing in the name, and for the honor of Jesus Christ, our risen Lord and Savior. Amen.

4 Page 7 Trail Guide Week of February 9, 2012 Preparing the soil of my heart Colossians 3:1 begins with a restatement of the indicative ( you have been raised with Christ ) which forms the foundation for the imperative which follows: set your hearts on things above. The literal translation for the phrase is actually more like, keep seeking all that is above. Various translations and paraphrases of this phrase read: seek the things that are above (NRSV); set your sights on the realities of heaven (NLT); the impossible-to-dissect-combination of verses 1 & 2 from Peterson - So if you re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don t shuffle along, eyes to the ground (The Message); and my favorite, reach out for the highest gifts of Heaven (JB Phillips). These variations point to the difficulty one encounters trying to capture the full essence of a word or phrase from another language, time and setting. So what s the big deal? Paul is here revealing the subterranean foundation for Christian ethics embedded in the complete orientation of one s life and the decisive turning of one s will to the person of Christ; a wholehearted seeking to serve and please One who first came passionately seeking us (Luke 19:10). The Way of Christ is not simply another set of philosophical principles to be held up for picking and choosing like one would options or accessories on a car it is an all-or-nothing seeking after Christ, and then learning to live out the implications of that destiny-changing choice. In other words, becoming a friend of God. Mon, 2/9 Colossians 3:1-4 What are the things you seek after? What does it mean to you to seek after things above ; to set your mind there as well? Tues, 2/10 Colossians 3: 5-11 Paul s list is not comprehensive, nor is it a simple checklist of do s and don ts (he actually argues against having such a list). Rather, his list exemplifies a deeper issue idolatry, setting oneself up as king, judge, ruler, etc. In what ways do you seek to be in control instead of trusting in God? What do you need to kill in order to make room for Christ? Wed, 2/11 Colossians 3:12-13 Consider the virtues also as representative of one who bends the knee to the King of kings. What qualities would others like to see more of in you? Thurs, 2/12 Colossians 3:14 The King James Version translates love as charity. In some ways, this word that we have relegated to a more narrow use actually helps us to grasp the essence of the love God desires to see in us actions and attitudes that help others in need. How can you put on charity today? Fri, 2/13 Colossians 3: Paul s final instructions in this section seem almost passive by comparison to the rest of this passage, let. He s telling us now to make sure to make room, allow space, time, energy, whatever for God s peace, God s rule, God s word and God s way to gain root and to grow; and to make sure nothing hinders that growth. How are you actively letting God s peace, etc. to grow in you? Sat, 2/14 Tell someone you love them. Show them by bringing them to worship on Sunday! Pray for our Sunday worship & activities. 5 You re invited and encouraged to prayerfully consider organizing, forming, joining a small group for Lent using either one of these two resources as your content for discussion, learning and spiritual growth. Over and over folks are seeing first-hand the significant benefit spiritually and relationally - to participating in a small group, even one that is short term. Don t miss out on a great opportunity to deepen your faith, broaden your circle of friends, and grow as we walk with Jesus through Lent! Anna Fitch Courie, an Episcopalian, has written Christ Walk: A 40-Day Spiritual Fitness Program, for those who want a more holistic approach to the Lenten Journey. Courie, a registered nurse and Army wife with hearing loss, asthma, gastrointestinal problems, and not a very athletic person has written a devotional that invites Christ-followers to set spiritual, mental, fitness, and other goals for the Lenten journey around the theme of walking. Copies of the book and the devotional are also available in Wesley to see. Do you ever come across a book that really appeals to you, and you want to share the reading experience with others so you have people with whom you can talk about it? Jill Ryan discovered this book recently and would love to have to a few people, who are also interested in the book, to get together with during Lent and chat about it. Another resource is The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus, by Adam Hamilton. One can read the 40-day devotional ($9), get a copy of his book ($12), and/or participate in a small group. Copies of the book and the devotional are also available in Wesley to see and sign up. About The Way of Serenity (from Harper Collins): Father Jonathan Morris, has seen firsthand how easily our day-to-day lives are consumed with anxiety and stress as we focus on our failures and troubles, while peace feels unattainable. When he re-discovered the Serenity Prayer, he realized that this little prayer can be, in fact, a powerful roadmap for our spiritual journey toward God. As he began to share this prayer with others, he saw that living these simple lines became a source of profound peace and happiness: Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. For years a mainstay of recovery programs, this prayer has proven it can change lives. What's more, through it we all can find comfort and support, including an active collaboration with God's grace as he works alongside us to grant the serenity we seek. Unpacking the prayer phrase by phrase, we discover how we can gain a deeper spiritual understanding by practicing its message. Through powerful personal stories, illuminating historical anecdotes, and biblical passages that show us God's plan for our lives, The Way of Serenity will help us grow closer to God and find serenity, regardless of our circumstances. Sign-up now at the Information Desk or online or talk with Jill!
6 My Covenant of Preparation for Easter, 2015 The 40 days of Lent give us time to prepare for Easter Sunday. This preparation enables us to authentically experience the depth, meaning, and power of Christ's death and resurrection. It enables us to more effectively witness to that experience with others. With this in mind, I covenant with my brothers and sisters at LUMC to commit myself to the following disciplines that I may continue on my path toward sanctification my conversion from sin and death to the fullness of God s love and life in Jesus Christ. Thus I make the following commitments to discipline and growth for the season of Lent: (Check the ones you prayerfully commit to do) Inward and Personal Disciplines Spend time minutes/day in prayer, scripture reading, meditation and reflection. Read one of the following recommended devotional books for Lent: Christ Walk, by Anna Fitch Courie, or The Way, by Adam Hamilton Begin to keep a journal of prayer concerns, questions, reading. Join with other Christ-followers to worship each Sunday during Lent. Participate in Holy Week worship as an act of love and waiting with Jesus. Other promptings: (see more complete list online or at Just Ask in Wesley Hall) Outward and Social Disciplines Host / Participate with others in a weekly / bi-weekly / monthly small group. (circle which one) Write a letter of affirmation each week to a person who has touched my life. Listen and respond to Christ's call to a ministry of serving the materially poor: Pray for someone I know who is not connected with a church and invite them to join me for worship Easter Sunday. Other promptings: (see more complete list online or at Just Ask in Wesley Hall) (signed) (print name) (date) (place on altar table during closing song; returned to you by mail)
