4 4 Traditional Service Wesley Sanctuary 7.30am / 9.30am / 11.30am / 5.00pm SERVE FAITHFULLY WITH JOY WE GATHER AND UNITE IN HIS NAME Greetings & Welcome Explanation of the Hymn Sunday PRELUDE (Silent Prayer & Meditation ) In worship, no one is a spectator. All are participants who are motivated by the love of God, centred on Jesus, prompted and driven by the Holy Spirit. We present our worship, our life as a living sacrifice to God, the ultimate Audience. SOLI DEO GLORIA. Order Of Service Home Before Dark Taken from Our Daily Bread, June 30, 2004 by D. De Haan (for meditation during prelude) None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy... Acts 20:24 (NKJV) Parents often tell their children, Be home before dark. And in areas not served by electricity, travellers feel a pressing need to reach their destination while light still lingers in the sky. Home before dark means a successful journey and a safe arrival. Robertson McQuilkin used this phrase to express his desire to remain faithful to the Lord throughout his spiritual journey. His prayer ended with the words Lord, let me get home before dark. He explained this by first saying, I fear... that I should end before I finish, or finish but not well. That I should stain Your honour, shame Your name, grieve Your loving heart. Few, they tell me, finish well. McQuilkin s words echo the heartfelt longing of the apostle Paul as he faced danger ahead in Jerusalem: None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (Acts 20:24). It is God s word of grace (v 32) that encourages us to continue in faith, for it tells us that He is able to strengthen us until the end of our lives. So let s keep walking and trusting as we pray, By Your grace, Father, I humbly ask You to help me get home before dark. Immortal words of truth we ve read, So powerfully penned, so filled with grace, Will follow us through all our days And spur us on to win life s race. D. De Haan The race of life is run by faith and won by grace.

Take my moments and my days; Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move At the impulse of Thy love. Take my feet, and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee. COVENANT PRAYER Leader: Christ has many services to be done; some are easy, others are difficult; some bring honour, others bring reproach; some are suitable to our natural inclinations, and temporal interests, others are contrary to both. In some we may please Christ and please ourselves; in others we cannot please Christ except by denying ourselves. Yet the power to do all these things is assuredly given us in Christ, who strengthens us. People: I am no longer my own, but Thine. Put me to what Thou wilt, rank me with whom Thou wilt; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for Thee or laid aside for Thee, exalted for Thee or brought low for Thee; let me be full, let me be empty; let me have all things, let me have nothing; I freely and heartily yield all things to Thy pleasure and disposal. All: And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thou art mine, and I am Thine. So be it. And the covenant, which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Soon you will cross the Jordan River and take that land. And if you and your descendants want to live a long time, you must always worship the Lord and obey His laws. Pay attention, Israel! Our ancestors worshiped the Lord, and He promised to give us this land that is rich with milk and honey. Be careful to obey Him, and you will become a successful and powerful nation. Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only true God! So love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. Memorize His laws and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning. Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them. Write these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates. The Lord promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that He would give you this land. Now He will take you there and give you large towns, with good buildings that you didn t build, and houses full of good things that you didn t put there. The Lord will give you wells that you didn t have to dig, and vineyards and olive orchards that you didn t have to plant. But when you have eaten so much that you can t eat any more, don t forget it was the Lord who set you free from slavery and brought you out of Egypt. Worship and obey the Lord your God with fear and trembling, and promise that you will be loyal to Him. RESPONSE HYMN Lord, I Give You My Heart This is my desire to honour You Lord, with all my heart I worship You All I have within me I give You praise All that I adore is in You Lord, I give You my heart I give You my soul I live for You alone Every breath that I take Every moment I m awake Lord, have Your way in me

12 12 Traditional Service Wesley Sanctuary 7.30am / 9.30am / 11.30am / 5.00pm Hebrews 11:1-2; 12:1-11 (New International Version) Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. The Race of Faith Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. God Disciplines His Children In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, My son, do not make light of the Lord s discipline, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. RESPONSE HYMN Find Us Faithful Choir: Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful May the fire of our devotion light their way May the footprints that we leave Lead them to believe And the lives we live inspire them to obey Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful All: Repeat James 1:2-18 (English Standard Version) Testing Of Your Faith Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

13 13 10th Sunday In Kingdomtide / Hymn & Praise Weekend / W&M Ministry Dedication / 29 October 2017 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and He Himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures RESPONSE HYMN Dear Lord, Lead Me Day By Day Choir: Dear Lord, lead me day by day; Make me steadfast, wise, and strong; Happy most of all to know That my dear Lord loves me so. Praise to God, fount of love, Praise from morn till the set of sun; Praise at home, praise in church; Praise to God everywhere on earth. Galatians 5:16-26 (English Standard Version) Life By The Spirit But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

14 14 Traditional Service Wesley Sanctuary 7.30am / 9.30am / 11.30am / 5.00pm RESPONSE HYMN Spirit Of The Living God Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Acts 20:17-25 (New King James Version) Finish The Race With Joy From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. And when they had come to him, he said to them: You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. RESPONSE HYMN Women: All The Way My Saviour Leads Me All the way my Saviour leads me; What have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my Guide? Heav nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell! For I know, whate er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well, For I know, whate er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well. Men: All the way my Saviour leads me, Cheers each winding path I tread, Gives me grace for every trial, Feeds me with the living bread. Though my weary steps may falter, And my soul athirst may be, Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see, Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

15 15 10th Sunday In Kingdomtide / Hymn & Praise Weekend / W&M Ministry Dedication / 29 October 2017 All: Pastor : People: All: All the way my Saviour leads me; Oh, the fullness of His grace! Perfect rest to me is promised In my Father s blest embrace. When my spirit, clothed immortal, Wings its flight to realms of day, This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way, This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way. May our personalities blend in a superb harmony, As, laying our egos aside, we learn to prefer one another And to delight in encouraging the gifts we see in others. Let there be no star temperament, no prima donna behaviour among us, but a sense of ensemble, as we try to be as anonymous as possible so that You can shine through our efforts to the glory of Christ. And when all is done, may we be in the wings and He in the spotlight, taking the centre stage and receiving all the applause! RESPONSE HYMN The Servant King From heav n You came, helpless babe, Enter d our world, Your glory veil d; Not to be served but to serve, And give Your life that we might live. This is our God, the Servant King, He calls us now to follow Him, To bring our lives as a daily offering Of worship to the Servant King. Pastor: We are the people of God. People: We have gathered to give our worship to the One who gave us life, redeemed us in Christ, and who, having redeemed us, has the right to lay claim to our lives. Pastor: We are the people of God, and the means through which God ministers to His world. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness. People: But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. He must become greater; I must become less. Pastor: Let us give back to God our skills, our experience, our service, and our money, that both directly and indirectly we may help those in need. All: Lord, show us all that You want us to do, in Your church and throughout the world. Remind us again that what we do for others, we do for You. Amen.

16 16 Traditional Service Wesley Sanctuary 7.30am / 9.30am / 11.30am / 5.00pm * HYMN OF DEDICATION May The Mind Of Christ Choir: May the mind of Christ, my Saviour, live in me from day to day, By His love and pow r controlling all I do and say. Women: All: Leader: Men: All: May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph only through His pow r. May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, That I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea; Him exalting, self abasing, this is victory. May I run the race before me, strong and brave to face the foe, Looking only unto Jesus as I onward go. May His beauty rest upon me, as I seek the lost to win, And may they forget the channel, seeing only Him. WE GO IN UNITY TO SERVE HIM *A PARTING CHALLENGE AND BENEDICTION Pastor : The service is ended, People: but our life in Jesus Christ goes on. Pastor : We go now, in His Name, into all the world. 17 17 Choral Anthems I Will Rise 7.30am There s a peace I ve come to know Though my heart and flesh may fail. There s an anchor for my soul. I can say, It is well. Jesus has overcome And the grave is overwhelmed. The victory is won, He is risen from the dead. And I will rise when He calls my name, No more sorrow, no more pain, I will rise on eagle s wings. Before my God Fall on my knees and rise. I will rise, I will rise. And hear the voice of many angels sing, Worthy is the Lamb! And I hear the cry of every longing heart, Worthy is the Lamb! There s a day that s drawing near When this darkness breaks to light. And the shadows disappear And my faith shall be my eyes. I will rise when He calls my name, No more sorrow, no more pain. I will rise on eagle s wings. Before my God Fall on my knees and rise. I will rise. All Creatures Praise Him Alleluia, alleluia! (X6) All creatures of our God and King Lift up your voice and with us sing! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam! O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! O, O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heav n along; Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice, Ye lights of evening, find a voice! O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! O, O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! 9.30am Alleluia, alleluia! (X4) All men of tender heart, Forgiving others, take your part; Who pain and sorrow bear, Praise God and on Him cast your care! O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! O, O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness; Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One! O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! O, O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia, Amen! By Faith 11.30am & 5.00pm By faith we see the hand of God in the light of creation s grand design, In the lives of those who prove his faithfulness, Who walk by faith and not by sight. By faith the prophets saw a day when the longed for Messiah would appear With the pow r to break the chains of sin and death, And rise triumphant from the grave. CHORUS We will stand as children of the promise, We will fix our eyes on Christ, our souls reward; til the race is finished and the work is done We ll walk by faith and not by sight. By faith the church was called to go In the pow r of the Spirit to the lost, To deliver captives, and to preach good news In ev ry corner of the earth. By faith this mountain shall be moved, And the pow r of the gospel shall prevail; For we know in Christ all things are possible For all who call upon his name. CHORUS (X2) Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided, Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! By faith we see the hand of God. By faith this mountain shall be moved. We ll walk by faith and not by sight. We ll walk by faith! 22 22 All Services THE RITUAL OF DEDICATION FOR PERSONS CALLED TO SERVE IN THE MINISTRY OF WORSHIP TO THE LORD Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, WORSHIP is the highest honour we can give to God. It is the highest expression of our love to Him. Worship is central in our Christian life. It is the Lord s call to everyone who confesses that Jesus is Lord. When everything ceases, worship continues to eternity. Worship is an offering. Let us ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name. Bring an offering and come before Him. His love so amazing demands our best. So let us bring to Him all our service, and all that is most honouring and the best we have. Let us give to Him the offering of our lives! Today we dedicate those amongst us who have been called to help us worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth, our brothers and sisters whom the Lord has placed in various capacities in this ministry of Worship unto Him. Dear co-workers in Christ, we rejoice because you have obeyed the call to serve in this ministry of Worship unto the Lord in all your various capacities, committing your time, energy and talents to the glory of God and our corporate worship. Will you endeavour always to be reverent in the house of God, and seek at all times to live a life in accordance with the Holy Scripture? We will, the Lord being our Helper. Do you promise obedience to those to whom the church has committed authority over you? We do. God of glory, around whose eternal throne all the heavenly powers offer their ceaseless songs of praise, grant that we may overhear these songs, and with our own lips and lives interpret them to all in whose presence we serve, play or sing; that Your church may behold the beauty of her King, and see with mortal eyes the land that is afar, where all Your promises are celebrated, and where all Your love in every sight and sound is the theme of eternal rejoicing. Congregation: O Lord our God, who is worthy to be praised and to be held in reverence by all, give Your grace to these who serve in the ministry of Worship unto You, that in giving of their best to You, helping us all to minister to You through words, deeds and songs, we may all glorify Your Holy Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor (To congregation): I commend to you these persons whom we have dedicated to the ministry of Worship in Christ s Church. Will you seek together to offer praise to God? Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful songs. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; Give thanks to Him and praise His name. Let us serve the LORD our God with all our heart and with all our soul! Sing the glory of His name; MAKE HIS PRAISE GLORIOUS! Find out more how you can use your talents and time to SERVE THE LORD in Wesley Congregation: We will do so, with God s help. Amen.

But there is no other name that carries life, power and love than the name of Jesus. This song wonderfully encapsulates what Paul talks about in Philippians 2: Jesus humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death even death on the cross (v8), and was exalted to the highest place and given the name above every other name (v9). It is this very name that gives all life and paves the way to eternal fellowship with God. It is this very name that has power to heal the sick and break chains. It is this very name that demonstrates what true love is. May this song fill each of us with amazement at the sovereignty, power and love of Jesus Christ, and the determination to be the light of the world so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (v10-11). 30 30 Prayer & Praise Ministries 1. The Strategy In , we continued building on the strategy we had implemented in In aligning ourselves with the Directions 2020, the Prayer & Praise Ministry sought to facilitate a believer s growth in Christ (B1) through transformational services where a believer is brought into an encounter of God through worship, intercessory prayer, preaching of the Word and intentional ministry time. We also sought to create a welcoming community within the service so that the congregation feels accepted and welcomed, thereby helping to build community (B2). The vision is to make each service a transformational service where both believers and pre-believers can encounter God and be transformed by Him. To achieve this, we focused on three components: a. Spirit-filled service. This is achieved by building the spiritual lives of our worship team and volunteers, implementing a pre-service prayer strategy, and creating a worship experience that ministers to all during the services. b. Service excellence. We use our God-given skills and musical talents to create worship services that bring greater honour and glory to Him every weekend. c. Warm and welcoming atmosphere. This is achieved by the atmosphere of love created by our ushers. 2. Developments in the Ministry Over the past year, we have seen God s hand upon His church, resulting in a steady increase in congregational attendance across the Prayer & Praise services. The Saturday Service has grown to an average of presently. Growth was also seen at our Sunday morning Prayer & Praise services, with the 9.30am Prayer & Praise service reaching full capacity at Wesley Hall most of the year. This was partly the reason that led to the launch of Wesley@Cathay to create more space for our congregation at this timeslot. Fully embracing the Prayer & Praise Ministry vision outlined above and the commission to reach out, Wesley@Cathay was started in May 2017 at the Grand Cathay. This is a service beyond the walls of Fort Canning which seeks to be a light in the city, where all who come will be welcomed, valued and accepted with the love of Christ, where we are passionately seeking to encounter the living God, and where we hope all will be inspired to impact the world by living out our faith. It was for us a two-year journey of faith where we sought God s leading and experienced His provision as He increased our number of volunteers and strengthened our core leadership team for this new season. Wesley@Cathay also lays the foundation for a feasible replicable strategy for us to establish multiple worship venues across the island, potentially overcoming the challenges of escalating land cost faced by our sister churches. Numerous enhancements were also made to the service format across all our services, including the development of a new Service Leader concept which united the roles of the congregational prayer leader and the MC/announcer. We also tweaked the service flow to establish the now familiar second worship set after the announcements and offering, thereby achieving a more meaningful transition into the hearing of the Word. 33 33 Sermon Notes Faithful To The End (7): The Keys To Answered Prayer Rev Dr Kow Shih Ming Wesley Hall (22 Oct) Scripture Passage: Daniel 9 Summary: Daniel s prayer to end captivity of the Israelites and be sent back to their own land, resulted in a prompt answer from God. What can we do for our prayers to be answered? 1. Approach God Earnestly And Humbly. Daniel fasted and pleaded with God in sackcloth and ashes (Dan 9:19a). He prayed earnestly, really wanting his prayer to be answered. And he did this humbly. Fasting is humbling ourselves to express our need for God. Sackcloth and ashes are public expressions of repentance and humility. What is required is not external, but a humble heart (Joel 2:12). 2. Admit Your Sin. Daniel confessed the sin of the people of Israel (Dan 9:5, 20). It was not his sin, yet he wholly identified with the sin of the people, and recognised and accepted the culpability of deserving to be exiled. Daniel was also specific about the sin committed instead of confessing generally (Dan 9:11a). 3. Ask Specifically. Daniel was also specific in what he wanted from God. Jesus wants us to be specific in what we ask. While it may seem obvious what blind Bartimaeus wanted, Jesus still asked him, What do you want me to do for you? (Mk 10:51). Being specific is not for God s benefit but for ours. When we are specific and articulate the request, our desires become clearer. 4. Align Your Prayer To A Specific Promise Of God. Daniel knew the Scripture and prayed in accordance to the promise that God had given that the exiled people of Israel will return to Jerusalem in 70 years (Jer 29:10). 5. Appeal To God s Character. God will answer in keeping with His character. Daniel had appealed to three virtues of God: God s power (Dan 9:4,15) God s faithfulness (Dan 9:4) God s mercy (Dan 9:9, 9:18b) 6. Aim For God s Glory. We are called to make requests on behalf of other people, but to do it all for the ultimate glory of God. Daniel was concerned for his people, but he was even more concerned for God s glory (Dan 9:19). God often gives us more than what we ask for. It may be hard to believe that as soon as we pray, God s answer is on the way. James 4:2 reminds us that we do not have what we want because we do not ask God for it. Will you start asking today? Why is the Trinity the central doctrine of the church, on which depends much of proper Christian thought and experience, including our salvation, worship, prayer, relationships, unity, and mission? We will examine these questions and come away more aware of the necessity for all Christians to believe in the Trinity, and more importantly, to live the Trinitarian life. There will be Q&A session with the speaker; come with your burning questions with regards to the Trinity such as Do we pray to the Father, or to the Son or to the Holy Spirit? Go Forth Conference (21-23 Jun 2018) Thank God for our nation and her leaders that we as believers have freedom to hold such Conference. The Organisers to have clarity and unity of goal and purpose for the Conference.
