2 Points of Interest: ***TWILIGHT MARKET*** Student work CROSS COUNTRY Tena koutou katoa, There are three weeks to go to the end of term with a number of very exciting events to fill up our days. Monte is such a busy and happy place to be, we are blessed. I find it so easy to welcome new people into our school because I am proud of what we are achieving and of our fantastic children. Thank you to all of you who have helped to make our place a good place to be. As always we aim to be a Christ-like community in the way we speak to each other and treat one another with our Mercy attitudes : - service and joy being two of these. I have picked up on these attitudes in the last week or so, through the hard working and committed PTA team we have working on the Twilight Market. I encourage you to put up your hands to help out and be Mercy actioners too we know that many hands make light work. Important CLARIFICATION I would like to ensure that everyone is very clear on what our fundraising goals are for. The PTA are trying to raise $ This money is already being donated towards the costs of our current 3 year lease of computer equipment which is already being used throughout the school by ALL students. The money raised by our Twilight Market will make a huge difference to everyday learning for teachers and students right here and right now. Our senior students have been enjoying the equipment since the beginning of the year and this has been rolled out to the whole school throughout the year. I do appeal to ALL FAMILIES to support our children who have already benefitted from, and are currently benefitting from, the great resources the PTA are helping raise money towards. Thank you for your service to our Mercy School. Health & Monte Cross Country has been this terms major sport focus. We also have had Rippa Rugby and Badminton as additional sports opportunities. Learning in a physical way at our school includes our spiritual, mental and emotional well being. Practicing and competing are part of the whole process of learning. The Sports motto at Monte says: Win with humility and lose with Grace. And yes, we do encourage everyone to participate so as to win..., but in a genteel manner!! This brings me to the Cross Country Day yesterday. The first 5 placings (Years 3-6) go on to the Catholic Schools Cross country on 10th Sept. The same applies for the Mt Roskill Zones Cross Country on 16th Sept but this day is only for Years 4 6. We had an awesome Cross Country day with very excited children all very Whanau Group proud! The chants were loud and strong and the running showed the amazing persevering attitudes our children have. Killer Hill got a few to walk, but did not defeat any of our Monte Kids! The happy positive buzz around school was palpable. God Bless, Mrs Mill. 3 SPECIAL CHARACTER COLUMN Social Justice: See, Judge, Act - Tirohia, Wanangatia, Mahia In Week 9 Catholic Social Justice will be a focus throughout Catholic Schools in New Zealand. Focus for 2014 :The Principles of Catholic Social Teaching, and how these are put into action in our school. The Seven Catholic beliefs about people and their lives: ( from CaritasSJW 2014 Resource) Human dignity: Every person is valuable to Creator God whether they are men or women, boys or girls, old, young, any race or religion, rich or poor, healthy or sick or differently abled. Every person has mana and is worthy of our respect. Galatians 3:28, Isaiah 42:1-4, Isaiah 43:4-7 Protection of the poor and vulnerable: We need to find ways to help those who are poor, in danger, sick or frightened. We must protect them as part of our human family. Luke 6:17-26, Isaiah 58:6-8, 20, Isaiah 35:3-7, Ps 113:7-9 Stewardship: We do not own the land, the seas or the sky. We are kaitiaki- guardians. We must care for them so that all people who come after us can live well too. We need to share the water and food from this earth with the whole human family. Proverbs 3:9-10, Isaiah 55:1-6, Ps 104:27-30 Participation: Everybody has a right and a duty to take part in their community and work together so that everyone can be happy. Everybody has the right to be included in activities and groups like schooling, work, culture, politics, or sports. Matt 52:32-39, Ps 67:1-7 Solidarity: We belong to one big human family one whānau.we need to support each other, no matter where we live in the world so that everyone can live peaceful, happy and useful lives. Matt 10:40-42, Eph:3:14-21, Ps 145:14-20 Subsidiarity: People should have a say in decisions that affect them. As much as possible, communities should make decisions for themselves, rather than large organisations or governments making decisions for them. Ps 25:4-5, 9-10, Acts 15:6-13, Acts 16:4-6 Common Good: This principle is followed when decisions are made which are the best for everyone in the community or the country. These decisions do not put the rights of a few individuals above the needs of the whole group. Luke15:1-6, Ps 32:8, Job 5:9-16, Acts 1:42-47 Over the next few weeks our Y5 & 6 Special Character team will be out and about in the playground and classrooms armed with i-pads gathering evidence of Social Justice Action at work in our school. God of justice, as we begin our work together on the theme of Catholic social teaching, We ask you to plant in our hearts a spirit of justice and compassion. Open our minds to how we can bring this into action in our school. That our school community live and proclaim justice, truth and love for all. E Te Atua, we place these prayers into LOVE PEACE JUSTICE COMPASSION RECONCILIATION SERVICE COMMUNITY Vickie Boffey DRS
